Tourists exodus today relieved

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

@ragamuffins3

This is why I’m so glad I live in a city where you rub shoulders with hundreds and thousands of people everyday and you would have no idea who is a “local” and who is a “tourist.” No idea of “incomers” or any such nonsense. Just people from all across the planet, living here, working here, passing through and everybody doing what they need to do and minding their own business without judgment from anyone who id under the delusion they own the place. And no, we don’t tell anyone to “go home” in September. Not do we blame congestion or anti-social behaviour on “incomers” or do the whole woe-is-us act - “Wah... I want ‘them’ all to go away so I don’t have to queue for the Natural History Museum - wah wah wah.” Imagine! The parochial mindset in some places does my head in. OP, I’m afraid you do Wales no favours with this thread.
Give over. What a silly comparison. Confused

A city has an infrastructure that was designed to accommodate large numbers of people all year round.

Unfortunately, a small town with a few beaches wasn’t ever designed to support an almost doubling of inhabitants from June to October. This is definitely the situation where I live and the tourist income is only a small percentage of the total income generated for the local area.

Therefore, the roads, car parks, public amenities, supermarkets, etc. are suddenly bursting at the seams, tempers get frayed very quickly and it is often the visitors who are impatient and rude believing that they are entitled to priority because they’re paying £x for the privilege.

You never hear anyone beeping their car horn or trying to cut up a slower driver outside of these periods. Ordinarily, we often take our time packing the shopping and stand and chat to the checkout assistant but if you dare to do that in the summer months, you’ll have people tutting away behind you.

We live here because like the slower pace of life and expecting everything to move at 100mph because that’s what you’re used to back home is a big part of the problem!

@justasking111

Clearly the poster saying you’ve clearly never holidayed in Uk was taking the piss

Marni83 · 30/08/2021 15:57

It was a way of implying you are something of a hypocrite perhaps

And you’re confirmation that you do holiday in Uk sort of confirms that

ragamuffins3 · 30/08/2021 16:11

MrsScrubbithatescleaning - well yes, but my point was, that visitor surges are not something unique to seaside “tourist” towns. Do you think events don’t happen all year round in towns and cities that don’t being additional visitors with all the associated issues you mention? Every area has its unique people flows - whether these be students coming and going, festivals / sporting / cultural events or whatever. Summer tourism just happens to be yours. Nobody owns anywhere. Millions come to London all year round, particularly in summer. So what if you can’t get down the street? So what if there’s one of any number of events going on and the area is effectively a no go? Happens all the time. This is life. Visitors, whether they be from the U.K. or international, have as much right to be here as I do. They have as much right to be in car parks, restaurants and shops as I do.

ellyeth · 30/08/2021 16:18

If everywhere is packed out then it is down to the people and businesses offering accommodation. If the accommodation wasn't there, the tourists couldn't come. But those who own the accommodation should agree between them to ration the availability of their accommodation. That won't happen of course because that would affect their own pockets.

Up until now tourist areas have been anxious and upset because the absence of holidaymakers has had a very big impact on their towns. I can understand locals being upset when tourists are rude, inconsiderate and demanding but that isn't all tourists. Threads like this will alienate people and they may well decide that holidaying in the UK is not for them. So be careful what you wish for.

RobinPenguins · 30/08/2021 16:21

Bits of Wales and Cornwall/Devon pride themselves in hating outsiders, grockles and all that. I’ve never encountered the same in other rural areas of the UK. I don’t really get the Cornwall thing anyway, yes it’s lovely but it’s also crowded, expensive and really hard to get to. Far quicker to get to say Northumberland from London than it would be to Cornwall and the beaches are way better.

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 16:23

@NantesElephant

Haven’t read the whole thread but it’s been an unusual holiday season with more frayed tempers and antisocial behavior than usual. Not only much higher numbers of tourists to share the same facilities, the hospitality businesses have had to cope with low staffing due to Brexit, pandemic and a lack of affordable accommodation for seasonal workers. I will be glad when it’s quieter.
Don't forget the pings a wine bar bistro was shut three times for a week at a time this summer

Ah London
The most wonderful place on earth
Number of tourists that Londoners contend with OP, day in and day out would put your tourist “tsunami” to shame!

And yet we all rub along just fine.

Oh goodness, makes me pang to be back living there.

After one holiday in Tenby (laughably overrated), I will never set foot in Wales unless absolutely forced tk

I have never been abusive, threatening, nor 💩 in sand dunes, flower beds,

When a Michelin star restaurant gets abusive reviews and the reviewer gives five stars to the McDonald's drive thru you have to wonder about the reviewer

Tenby is seriously overrated yet won best UK beach the other week, have to admire their Mark skills 😅

Oh come on, London has the infrastructure to deal with the tourism it gets. Versus say, a small town like Perranporth, which normally has 3000 residents - and had an influx of 14000 to its beach alone one day this summer.

It's not remotely the same.

Hardly a fair comparison. I am London born and bought up, the vast majority of Londoners do not rub shoulder to shoulder with tourist as most of us live in the suburbs of London not right next to Buck palace and the Tower! So we hardly feel the tourists in the same way as those living in say cornwall and parts of Wales.

I doubt Wales will miss you much. Beautiful country with a gorgeous coast, I absolutely have loved every holiday I have had in there.

Marni83 · 30/08/2021 16:37

No and I’m sure not everyone in that tsunami of visitors did either

But they all contributed to your “tsunami”

Do you get what the pp was trying to point out?!

Marni83 · 30/08/2021 16:39

Yes because London invests

But these areas… they’ll accept the money
But won’t invest in the “infrastructure”
And what are you exactly talking about when you say “infrastructure”

IcedPurple · 30/08/2021 16:39

@justasking111

We will still be busy for a couple of months but these visitors will hopefully be politer.
YABU. And very rude.

But don't worry, hopefully this is your last summer of having to tolerate the great unwashed British masses, who'll be enjoying guaranteed sunshine, low prices and welcoming locals on the costa next year.

ragamuffins3 · 30/08/2021 16:40

‘When a Michelin star restaurant gets abusive reviews and the reviewer gives five stars to the McDonald's drive thru you have to wonder about the reviewer’

Hmmm, sounds like this whole thread is sparked by one or two specific incidents or ‘bad reviews’ OP?

Don’t wonder or worry about it. People go all over the place, do all-sorts and leave all-sorts of ‘reviews.’ Each to their own. What can you do about that?

FrauleinSchweiger · 30/08/2021 16:50

Well this thread is certainly good for a laugh!!

Can't believe people are so gullible as to believe half of what is written on here. Seriously if you believe that everyone in Cornwall hates tourists then your common sense has obviously taken a holiday tooGrin. It's my guess that these threads are started just to increase everyone's blood pressure and make people feel like they are a different species to those who live in a different place to others.

It certainly has been way busier in my neck of the Cornish woods (or coast) this summer and yes at times it has been frustrating when there are empty shelves in the local supermarkets or when you have to be somewhere and the roads are crazy but most of the people living here are pretty easy going. Of course you can run into idiots but hey, you can find them in London too you know (and plenty of other places too).

In reality most people are just getting on with their lives - which according to a v patronising pp (who lives in a big city of course) have "no real purpose" - HmmStar for arrogance from that one and no wonder that discussion becomes a little "heated" after such remarks.

And all these pps who say they are never going to tourist spots in the UK because of these "attitudes" - how do you know that people in tourist spots in other parts of the world don't sometimes have negative thoughts about tourists? It is possible isn't it?

category12 · 30/08/2021 16:52

Infrastructure = roads, public transport, water & sewage systems, healthcare etc.

I do not get it
Presumably the summer “tsunami” in to these hotspots doesn’t come as a surprise
And yet every year - high drama!

Invest in infrastructure
The shops have so much hospital days re stock levels during the summer months

Basically… prepare for it!

Marni83 · 30/08/2021 16:56

Infrastructure = roads, public transport, water & sewage systems, healthcare etc.

Roads and healthcare… local council should be voted in on basis that they will improve
These hot spots have been hotspots in all likelihood for decades!
Water and sewage systems - do tourists can use problems?

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 16:58

I don't understand the hate for tourists, do some people never leave their areas?

category12 · 30/08/2021 16:58

Yes indeed.

South West Water said the demand in Cornwall was about 10 megalitres more water per day compared to this time last year, which was "the equivalent of between 50,000 to 75,000 people's water use per day".

The company said the demand is "putting a strain on the network".

muffinffaces · 30/08/2021 17:00

The knuckle draggers were out in force this summer. Where do they usually holiday I wonder??

They sound awful but surely everywhere has arseholes.

Dentistlakes · 30/08/2021 17:00

We went to Wales this summer as we do every summer and apart from it being a bit busier than usual, we didn’t see any hostility or bad behaviour. That not to say it didn’t happen of course. I do think there were many people who are usually abroad and pissed off they were getting their holiday in the sun for perhaps the second year running. Likely they paid a fortune for a UK holiday which of course bears no resemblance to what they’re used to. It was much harder to eat out this year (busier and closures due to covid isolations).

There’s no excuse for rudeness and aggression, but I can see how it happened. Hopefully things will be more normal next year op; for everyone.
