Why must my neighbour have her washing machine on so early?

Since 9am this morning, it sounds like a Chinook helicopter is landing on my bedroom ceiling. By her own admission, there is no underlay beneath it and the noise is really quite something.
I would sympathise if she was a mum who needed to get the kids' uniforms on to wash, and then hang them outside to dry.
But she lives alone with no garden, and no outside drying area at all. Her washing could be done at ANY time of day.
I've already mentioned this to her and it makes no difference. In all other respects she is a good neighbour, so I don't want to rock the boat.
I am a single mum of 3, who works hard through the week. My kids are at their dad's place for their fortnightly weekend visit, and I'd just have loved a Sunday lie-in. Not even the bloody cat woke me up this morning! Grin

Oops, should have made it clear, but this is my upstairs neighbour I'm talking about.

9am is not early
I put mine on at 6.30 this morning
Maybe invest in some earplugs?

lanbro · 29/08/2021 10:13

I don't think 9 is early, my neighbour once woke me at 5am with her washer but was a one off. Try Quies ear plugs, they're amazing and block out pretty much anything

rainbowandglitter · 29/08/2021 10:14

9am isn't early. Maybe your definitions of early differ.

PrivateHall · 29/08/2021 10:14

Urgh that sounds very annoying! I am not sure there is really much you can do though as 9am isn't really that early for most people. I guess she just likes to get her chores over with earlier in the day, maybe so she can go out or chill later in the day. It does sound inconsiderate though, surely if you live in a flat you would be aware of your neighbours!

ohthatbloodycat · 29/08/2021 10:15

@insancerre
but presumably your neighbour doesn't live downstairs? Or you don't have your washing machine above their bedroom?

Yes, 9AM is not early!

It is funny how noisy parties are meant to be condoned (a neighbour of mine was partying until midnight last night), yet normal things in normal hours are condemned.

Most of the population get up 7AM latest in the week for work and some of us far earlier. And a lot of us cannot magically reset our body clock 2 days a week.

TiredButDancing · 29/08/2021 10:16

Mmm, I'm sympathetic overall but 9am isn't early. I mean, it would be nice if she could hold off until 10 or so, but around here, I'd consider 9am to be a perfectly reasonable time for neighbours to do things that are noisy, even though I wouldn't like it.

borntobequiet · 29/08/2021 10:17

9am isn’t early. 7am on a Sunday would be unreasonable, maybe 8, but not 9.

Nsky · 29/08/2021 10:17

9am is not early, why the complaining

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2021 10:17

Maybe she had plans, works shifts, needs something cleaned, threw up on her bedsheets….

KatherineOfGaunt · 29/08/2021 10:17

9am isn't that early, though. And it's far easier to wash clothes earlier in the day as they have all day to dry.

If you said 8am or earlier I'd be on your side.

Tattybyes · 29/08/2021 10:17

9am isn't early. She probably gets a lot of noise from your flat seeing as she is on the bottom

daisypond · 29/08/2021 10:17

9am is not early, sorry.

MrsOrMiss · 29/08/2021 10:17

YABU, it's 9 am, not 6/7/ or even 8 am on a Sunday morning.

Your neighbour might've already been up since 5/6/7 and has waited until 9. Maybes she has to go to work/go out/vomited on her bedding and can't wait any longer to get it done?
Your lie in doesn't trump their need/wish to do her laundry.

ohthatbloodycat · 29/08/2021 10:18

Hmm, thanks all. I probably am being unreasonable then! It's just not something I would do if a neighbour had already raised it with me.
Good to get another perspective though.

@insancerre I hope you don’t have close neighbours

ComDummings · 29/08/2021 10:18

9am is late for me to do washing. If you have neighbours you need to expect some ‘normal’ noise. It’s not her problem that you can hear it from your bedroom.

IsadoraQuagmire · 29/08/2021 10:18

9 o'clock is a perfectly normal time to use a washing machine any day of the week.

icedcoffees · 29/08/2021 10:18

9am isn't early but she should be putting underlay underneath to try and dull the noise.

ohthatbloodycat · 29/08/2021 10:18

@BikeRunSki

Maybe she had plans, works shifts, needs something cleaned, threw up on her bedsheets….
Well it's pretty much every weekend, so I doubt that ...

I'm on the bottom.

tempchecked · 29/08/2021 10:19

You have my sympathy OP. The machine is noisy, has no underlay and is probably not 100% level either. That makes the noise quite loud no matter what time of the day it is.

I'd bring her into your flat when her machine is going (supply tea and biscuits) and demonstrate how loud it is. But some people are totally oblivious to the noise they make, particularly if it does not bother them too much.

Tattybyes · 29/08/2021 10:19
  • sorry misread you are on the bottom
LizBennet · 29/08/2021 10:20

I can see why you’re annoyed at not having a lie in (I’d love one myself 😬), 9am isn’t early at all, sorry.
