Why must my neighbour have her washing machine on so early?

Since 9am this morning, it sounds like a Chinook helicopter is landing on my bedroom ceiling. By her own admission, there is no underlay beneath it and the noise is really quite something.
I would sympathise if she was a mum who needed to get the kids' uniforms on to wash, and then hang them outside to dry.
But she lives alone with no garden, and no outside drying area at all. Her washing could be done at ANY time of day.
I've already mentioned this to her and it makes no difference. In all other respects she is a good neighbour, so I don't want to rock the boat.
I am a single mum of 3, who works hard through the week. My kids are at their dad's place for their fortnightly weekend visit, and I'd just have loved a Sunday lie-in. Not even the bloody cat woke me up this morning! Grin

Icedcoffee- where did I suggest neighbour couldn't wash clothes, do they not wash so well at 10am?

User56439876 · 29/08/2021 10:38

I alway set mine to start a 6 because we have an economy 7 meter and the electricity is under half the price until 8:30 in summer and 7:30 when the clocks change. If I need to use the dryer in the winter, washing starts even earlier. We live in a detached house though with a caravan on the drive between us an next door

LaBellina · 29/08/2021 10:38

Reminds me a bit of my old neighbor who would bang on the ceiling because I dared to hoover on Sunday morning at 11 and it was destroying her lie in….

sammylady37 · 29/08/2021 10:40

Gosh, how dare this childless woman organise her life to suit herself instead of taking the childcare schedule of her neighbour into consideration Hmm

Dailyfuckyoumail · 29/08/2021 10:40

My neighbour had her washing machine on an intense spin cycle at 7.30am this morning

IceLace100 · 29/08/2021 10:40

So women without children should... what? Never wash their clothes and remain stinky? Put their washing on at a time to suit their neighbours? Because after all they're only important if they have kids Hmm

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/08/2021 10:41

Its pretty unneighbourly to not take easy noise mitigation measures like ensuring the washing machine is properly balanced and something soft underneath. Even a cheap camping mat would help.

Poocalypso · 29/08/2021 10:41

9 is REALLY early in the weekend especially is you value your neighbours! I feel for you. If my nextdoorie came over to ask if I'd run mine a tad later I would absolutely do so. Good luck!

TheWeatherWitch · 29/08/2021 10:41

Sorry op, I’m not trying to be goady but WTF? 9am for your neighbour to be doing housework is perfectly acceptable. Now if she was banging about at 7 am on a Sunday you’d have some sympathy from me, but 9am really isn’t that early.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/08/2021 10:42

9am isn’t early and living in close proximity like in flats you’re bound to hear some noise.

IceLace100 · 29/08/2021 10:42

Rather than dismiss her needs because she is child-free, why don't you buy her some underlay and pay to have it installed at a time to suit her.

lannistunut · 29/08/2021 10:44

Yeah, sorry, I think YABU. If my neighbour asked me not to put my washing machine on at 9am I would ignore them too. 9am is not an unreasonable time, even if some prefer a later lie in.

I think you need earplugs and then the problem will be solved.

middleager · 29/08/2021 10:44

9am is not early!
My neighbours have been working on an extension for months now. The builders arrive at 7 something every day, including Saturday. Now that is early for a weekend!

ohthatbloodycat · 29/08/2021 10:45

@NavigatingAdolescence

Alas, mine is housed in an outbuilding, so no disruption from my machine at all! Grin

MN is weird
Kids can play in gardens and scream from 4am. People build bars and have barbecues with music all fucking summer
But wash your pants half way through the morning and it's war.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/08/2021 10:46

9am is a perfectly fine time to have your washing machine hit the spin cycle.

Macncheeseballs · 29/08/2021 10:46

Rather than disturb her neighbours much needed lie in, couldn't neighbour compromise just a wee bit and start it later, it's a simple kind gesture

ohthatbloodycat · 29/08/2021 10:47

It's still going, so I'm guessing an older model of machine.

LubaLuca · 29/08/2021 10:47

I think it was decent of her to wait until 9am. She could be washing bedding that she wants to put back on the bed this evening, so it's no good waiting until midday to start it.

Well, hardly.
@insancerre
but presumably your neighbour doesn't live downstairs? Or you don't have your washing machine above their bedroom?
I would still not think 9am is early. I would even think they refrained from putting it on earlier to be considerate and deemed 9am a reasonable time.

ThreeWitches · 29/08/2021 10:50

I'd bring her into your flat when her machine is going (supply tea and biscuits) and demonstrate how loud it is

What a weird thing to do

NoSquirrels · 29/08/2021 10:51

Buy her a present: www.lakeland.co.uk/53269/Steady-Spin-Anti-Vibration-Washing-Machine-Pad

Msgiggles30 · 29/08/2021 10:51

Im with you OP. I'm in a masionette upstairs and I would never put my washing on before 10am on a weekend or after 7pm any evening. I think its just common courtesy when I'm not working. I do understand if you need to do it early on week days to get it out before work but if she doesnt work shifts or have anywhere to actually hang it then holding off an hour when neighbours have asked shouldn't be an issue. I want to get on with my neighbours and be respectful so being upstairs I do all I can to not be noisy!

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 29/08/2021 10:52

I agree with you op. It might not be 5am early but it is pretty u considerate behaviour if there’s no other time she could do it. She’s being a bit precious especially after you said this is loud.
Maybe ask her round next time it’s in so she can hear it and say , would you possibly consider waiting until 10 am on a SUNDAY ONLY as it’s only day I can get a good rest?
