To have given pharmacist short shrift?

Enter pharmacy

Me: Good evening, I have a prescription to collect.

Pharmacist: name please

Me: first name surname

Pharmacist: was it sent today

Me: last week.

Comes back with it, checks address and I have my card ready to pay.

As I'm walking towards till she asks

"Does he pay for his prescriptions"

Me Confused for a second. "It's mine and yes I do"

Pharmacist: "well I just read the name" with a very defensive tone.

Me: shame you didn't also read the word before that says Miss.

Now I have a name that's unisex that isn't particularly unusual in this day and age (less so than when I grew up!) and people have made presumptions before and it doesn't bother me.

But I was actually annoyed she'd taken the effort to read the name and assume it belonged to someone else - rather than the person actually asking for it - and when I said it was mine act as though I was wrong to say that and retort the way she did as if annoyed at me saying that.

I'm having a rough time at the minute and can be over sensitive so I need the collective honesty on MN to tell me I'm right to have been annoyed or hand me a grip (but kindly Grin)

"Me: shame you didn't also read the word before that says Miss.".

Like a pp, I too have never spoken to a public service worker like that. You're plain rude, OP. There was no need for that snippy comment. No need at all. Think about how you speak to people in future.

I have never in my life spoken to a public service worker like this.

I was reading something in the paper today about key workers being on their knees and about the levels of abuse they are facing from the public.

It makes me sad that this is where we are now.

I admit I was short but that's not abuse!

The full name was written on there. She said it was for a male due to name - a name that said Miss!

I'm a public service worker.

And trust me. If I made a simple mistake and someone pointed it out I would apologise. Not justify by mistake when the evidence was there to prevent it in the first place.

And I'm a public service worker in a sector that's been called all sorts right through covid!

You probably will get posters using your op as inspiration for creative writing and coming at you with ridiculous stuff though, so I hope you haven't finished all the chocolate yet.
Not a single poster has told op what she should have said, they've just told her what she did say was rude and unnecessary.
Op then says "No, it wasn't". Surprise, surprise.

This makes it worse, not better.

Lactarius · 27/08/2021 19:37

I'll admit to be somewhat biased (*) but it was only a pharmacist and not a real person so don't worry too much.

(*) 4 Years at the London School of Pharmacy demonstrated that the pharmacy students spent far too long in the practice suite playing shops when they could have spent that time being stunningly attractive, scientifically awesome and generally better people by learning toxicology in the basement with the rest of us.

GintyMcGinty · 27/08/2021 19:37

You overreacted IMO

Yep - but of course you are forgetting that OP has clearly had it worse than everyone else and is therefore entitled to talk to them like shit.
itsgettingwierd · 27/08/2021 19:38

Can I just be clear.

I don't mind she made a mistake or incorrect assumption.

But when I said the prescription was mine she snapped at me that she'd just read the name. There's no excuse for that because the name said Miss.

What I'm wondering is the fact I'm bothered that she didn't apologise is an over reaction because I'm having a really tough time atm.

I'm really struggling atm in a world where it appears I have to be perfect and 100% on it whilst collapsing inside whilst others don't seem to have to have the same standards back towards me.

I think you were very rude, tbh. With a unisex name you should expect this.

gardeninggirl68 · 27/08/2021 19:40

Yabu and you know it

EarringsandLipstick · 27/08/2021 19:41

You were rude. Your updates make it sound even worse, especially your assessment that she didn't have much work to do.

It also sounds like she wasn't particularly pleasant but I wouldn't even class what she did as a 'mistake'.

I'm sorry things are tough for you at the moment but being rude to others isn't going to help you.

GintyMcGinty · 27/08/2021 19:43

I think you need to try and find some perspective and a sense of proportion.

Port1aCastis · 27/08/2021 19:44

YABU and very rude

SeoultoSeoul · 27/08/2021 19:45

You over reacted, why don't you tell us what's really bothering you and we will see if we can help with that.

My apologies for being unclear. My reference to creative writing was for those extrapolating wildly to re-write what happened into their own invented story - for instance, the ridiculous post claiming the op abused the pharmacist.
evianlion · 27/08/2021 19:47

Yep - but of course you are forgetting that OP has clearly had it worse than everyone else and is therefore entitled to talk to them like shit.

Hmm The op didn't talk to anyone like shit. You're making stuff up.

Since when is being a pharmacist a licence to be rude to people?

Eeve · 27/08/2021 19:48

If you actually said that, you were actually quite rude.

HeddaGarbled · 27/08/2021 19:48

OK, OP, you had a lapse whilst struggling. We’ve all done it. I’m sorry you have to face abuse in your job and thank you for all that you do.

I completely misunderstood, sorry.

Claypotkitchentable · 27/08/2021 19:52

If it’s a unisex name then it’s an easy mistake to make. Your response was rude and you’re being very over sensitive.

Oh sorry is it better if I say “give them short shrift”, although the phrase always sounds to me like a polite way of saying you spoke to someone like shit.
ilovesooty · 27/08/2021 19:55

I think you were a bit rude but you've said you're struggling.

I've seen loads of your posts and I don't think this sounds typical fwiw. I hope you feel better soon.
