To have given up on bras?

I've gained some weight...size 16/18 now. That plus lockdown means I seem not to be able to cope with wearing a bra anymore! I tend to wear a vest top under clothes and I have some of those weird nipple cover things for particularly close fitting clothes. Im aware it doesn't give me the best shape, but by lunchtime I'm ready to rip off just about any bra I try! Anyone else?? It's not a feminist thing, but when I look at my husband just casually chucking on a T-shirt in the morning, bras do seem like a kind of tyranny!Grin

I only wear soft bras and bralettes these days. Haven’t worn an underwired one since I retired.

FatAnkles · 27/08/2021 17:09

I hate underwires. Work of the devil. I have tried lots of bras all around my size (got measured at an independent shop) with higher band size, bigger cups and...no. They dig in, they slip around, they pinch. So I wear non-wired bras. Much more comfy.

Marguerite2000 · 27/08/2021 17:18

I stopped wearing proper bras 10 years ago, now I wear the lycra crop top ones. They're much more comfy.
It's like giving up high heels for comfy trainers.

youdoyoutoday · 27/08/2021 17:21

I hate bras too but needs must! At home Im fine without but I just could not go out in public without one on because my boobs are saggy and my nipples rarely point in the same direction unless it's down!

Greenrubber · 27/08/2021 17:28

I gave up bras about 6 years ago!
Only wear a sports bra for exercise
And a few sexy ones if I'm dressing up for the hubby
But day to day not bothered

Tigerstripe20 · 27/08/2021 17:30

Size 16-18 here too, but with smallish boobs ( B Cup)
Primark pack of three bralettes for me , unless I am wearing a white T shirt or blouse when I will go back to a T-shirt bra ..which is rare.
Life is too short to be uncomfortable and due to my size I am lucky enough not to have the dreaded mono-boob
My friend is much bigger cup size than me and only wears cropped sports tops.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 27/08/2021 17:34

Glamorise have very comfortable bralettes for larger sizes.

dementedpixie · 27/08/2021 17:38

I have GG boobs. I get under boob sweat if not wearing a bra so I always wear one

CovidCorvid · 27/08/2021 17:44

I’ve just found the M&S flexifit ones and they’re comfy but supportive.

Chloemol · 27/08/2021 17:53

I use M&S bralettes, no wiring, brilliant you don’t even know you have them on

CovidCorvid · 27/08/2021 21:03

@Chloemol would you say the bralettes are supportive enough for a DD….just for mooching about in….?

QueenBee52 · 27/08/2021 21:14

Im a DD and its not enough for me personally...

I need the 'Full' or 'Medium' support type..

you might be fine though.. sadly my boobs are heavy DD 😩

VestaTilley · 27/08/2021 21:18

YANBU. I haven’t worn a bra since breastfeeding DS about 2 years ago- I just wear crop tops now. Highly recommend it. If you want to wear a nice dress you can put a bra on occasionally, if you like, otherwise I see no earthly reason to wear them unless you need extra support. I think they’re a con; like so many of the things women are just expected to shell out for.

I used to have huge boobs, but lost weight and am now about 9 stone, plus breastfeeding shrank my bust, so now I find a crop top is all I need.

Sunshinealligator · 27/08/2021 21:19

I felt the same, then I went to Rigby & Peller. Honestly, they changed my life. So so comfy. I bought two..m I didn't look at the price. I almost fell through the floor when they told me the total. I had the second in a bag for about 3 weeks considering whether to wear it or not, but its so so comfy.
I almost forget I'm wearing them. They new I have don't have that annoying plasticy bit that digs in around the armit area... the bit that always sticks in and makes me uncomfortable usually.

Thomasina79 · 27/08/2021 21:20

I have a shoulder tear in a tendon which is horribly painful all the time, particularly with the movements of putting on a bra! I am waiting for a steroid injection appointment. In the meantime I am also waiting for a. Comfortable, easy to put on bra. I have tried all sorts. Jersey ones are ok ish but don’t give much support. I hate underwired ones. I ams also plus size which doesn’t help.

Twilight7777 · 27/08/2021 21:24

I’m exactly the same, haven’t worn one since before lockdown, I wear the silicone nipple covers too

seemenow · 27/08/2021 22:02

What is wrong with free flowing breasts? Really? I don’t have large breasts, but have worn bras all my life. Why? I thought I needed to, because everyone wore bras. if bras give you the support and comfort you need, then wear them. But i hate them, and feel like
I’m frowned upon for having ‘givien up‘ on my appearance by not wearing one.

seemenow · 27/08/2021 22:04

And yes I’m old

Riv · 27/08/2021 22:20

I’m the same size as you op, but find I am in pain if I do anything except sleep without a bra. I ache and get back pain that needs painkillers if I am up and bra-less for a couple of hours.
Although I am a size 16 -18 my bra band size is only 32, but H or J cup depending on the brand. Soft bras do nothing. Loosing weight makes my tummy shrink a bit, and my thighs and bum, but not the boobs, so they look even worse!

Ladypuggerz · 27/08/2021 22:31

I redid my measurements for first time in years using Boob or Bust and was a completely different size to what I thought. My regular bras now feel comfortable and look great but since being introduced to Molke bras, I wear those 90% of the time as they are incredibly comfy and supportive. Worth a look! Sometimes I wear just a crop or bralette too.

I'm the same, also size 16/18 and find no matter what bra I wear my skin just feels super itchy (to pint scratching has caused red marks under my breast bone) I've opted for vest tops and nipple covers to
TooYoungToNotice · 28/08/2021 00:08

The older I get the lower my tolerance to any bra gets, no matter how well fitted.

However I will highly recommend m and s extra high impact serious sport bra. I bought it for running but it's so comfy I'm going to order more for everyday.

gofg · 28/08/2021 02:50

For those with larger breasts I really can't see how not wearing a bra is comfortable - unless you don't move very fast.

I don't think I've ever felt uncomfortable wearing a bra - surely it they are so uncomfortable then you aren't wearing the right fit? I don't even notice that I'm wearing one.

Mummadeze · 28/08/2021 02:58

I am a size 16 and a 36G. If I didn’t wear a bra, my boobs would look horrendous in a top and I would feel mortified. You are lucky if yours aren’t really heavy and droopy!

PinkPlantCase · 28/08/2021 03:04

Yes! I’ve given up bras aswell. I occasionally throw one on if we’re going for a hike.

I find breastfeeding so much easier without a bra, so much less fiddley
