Red/ginger hair-what’s the big deal

Flowersintheattica · 25/08/2021 15:56

Toddler Dd has red/ginger/whatever colour you want to call it, and blue eyes. It’s the topic of conversation almost constantly among people-friends and strangers. It’s curly also, which adds to the hysteria more 😅
Dp and I both dark haired and people can’t seem to understand how this happened

Why is it such a big deal? In a good and/or bad way?

*Hair (missed out the main word)

Because it's gorgeous!

And yes, I'm a redhead. Grin

MrsRobbieHart · 25/08/2021 15:58

Because her hair is lovely?

Blindering · 25/08/2021 15:59

because it's in minority, differences are always picked out.

araiwa · 25/08/2021 15:59

Because it's unusual

Yutes · 25/08/2021 15:59

Well…people don’t understand genetics and red hair and blue eyes is just lovely.

Red hair is still quite coveted. It’s always been classed as unusual throughout history.

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/08/2021 16:00

Because its beautiful, and uncommon.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 25/08/2021 16:01

Because a proper gorgeous red hair is not common. Dd's was truly amazing .. Until she hit 15 and dyed it black. I was gutted. Hopefully she will grow out of her Goth faze and let it go back to red!! My df has 3 brothers and all the dd's have red hair except me!! Came out in my dd instead!!

PyjamaFan · 25/08/2021 16:01

I'm sure you already know this but the gene for red hair is recessive so is inherited from both parents. So you and your husband must both have 1 red hair gene and 1 dark hair gene.

My parents and brother all have dark brown hair too.

Flowersintheattica · 25/08/2021 16:01

It is very lovely, mainly people are complimentary, never awful, but often a bit confused or very interested. I know quite a few redheads so it’s just not anything out of the ordinary

I'd probably comment because I really like red hair, especially if it's dark auburn hair and curly hair.

If it's not that it would be something else. DD3 gets a lot of compliments from older ladies on her knitwear - all hand-knitted by my talented mum

This.

Some of the comments on here are no better than the people you've met. They fetishise it. It's creepy.

Flowersintheattica · 25/08/2021 16:04

@PyjamaFan I didn’t know that, thank you! Well my mum was born red, but it changed to blonde and dps brother was born red, but it went dark. We don’t know of any actual redheads in the family…
We both have Irish and Scottish in our family history,
Dp and I are both dark brunette, blue eyes and tan fairly easily. Dd is red hair, very bright blue eyes and very pale skin 🤷🏻‍♀️😅

My son has auburn hair (gradually getting lighter) and dark blue eyes, it’s a gorgeous combo.

ChewChewPanda · 25/08/2021 16:07

My daughter has red hair too and it’s nearly always the first thing people comment on when they see her, including asking where she gets it from (I’m blonde and my husband is dark haired). I think it’s just because it’s a bit unusual (and I also agree it’s beautiful), and they are just making conversation.

Classica · 25/08/2021 16:10

People just try and find something about a small child's appearance to compliment them on. 'Oh what gorgeous, red hair/big eyes/dimples etc. you have'.

People on MN obsess a but over red hair I've noticed. Claim they were upset they didn't have a red haired baby etc.

Flowersintheattica · 25/08/2021 16:12

@Classica I find it’s generally not a quick comment though, they go on about it quite a lot

This ^

I’ve had it my whole life, I don’t want strangers pointing out how “different” I am, thank you very much.

LynetteScavo · 25/08/2021 16:16

Blue eyes are usual with red hair I think (basing this on my family. My DM once told me people with black hair and blue eyes are only to be found in the island of Capri. Guess the colouring of one of my DC Grin.

People just like to comment on small children "Ooh what a pretty dress, ooh what nice blonde curls".

3scape · 25/08/2021 16:19

I was born ginger but gone brown and grey now and have ginger "body" hair. My first husband was blonde. I have three children shades of ginger and blonde. My husband now is very dark brown of hair and tans deeply. My youngest is the fairest in colour and husband is his dad. There's no rhyme or reason to it all Grin but yeah. People and their "witty" comments about the milkman do get a bit repetitive. I tend to be either aren't genetics wonderful or no I didn't fuck some random, but thanks for telling us who you're crushing on Grin depending on how foul a mood I'm in.

Jazzy1814 · 25/08/2021 16:19

My dd has dark ginger curly hair too and light bluey/green eyes. She gets compliments all of the time. We recently had a short uk break away and visited some touristy type shops and in both a crystal shop and art gallery she was given something for free 😮, wish that would happen to me 😂.

PossiblyPertunia · 25/08/2021 16:19

My 1 year old son has curly ginger hair too and I get stopped so often! Unfortunately I'm frequently told about how someone the know with ginger hair was horrifically bullied which a mum always wants to hear...

3scape · 25/08/2021 16:21

Oh and we are brown eyed. My blonde one blue eyed though.

Gingernaut · 25/08/2021 16:21

First redhead in generations in both sides of my family.

Freaked a few relatives out and have always had questions when people who have previously met me by myself, then go on to meet brown haired family members.
