I've just found out I'm expecting again.

I've not missed my period yet, so it's such early days. I have to attend a wedding in a couple of days and it's going to be so obvious if I don't drink. But I can't drink, right ? I know most women wouldn't suspect a pregnancy this early, so probably would drink- but I just can't do it, seeing as I know I am.

It will raise many eyebrows that I'm not drinking.

I also have three other weddings in the next few weeks ! It's going to be so tough and so obvious !! ( if I stay pregnant )

What kind of excuses work best??

Maybe best to not pretend to drink alcohol. Because when the baby is born, people will do the maths and some could make comments about how you were "drinking" while pregnant. I'd just go with the antibiotics fib myself.
And? If they did I'd just reply "and it's your business because?" and move the conversation on.

So sick of women being policed over what they can and can't do with their own bodies. Everyone can sod right off.

Plus the fact the OP has said she is 3 weeks' pregnant so in most instances she wouldn't even know yet.

I find it quote sad that a lot of people decide to comment/ask questions if people don't drink alcohol.

I don't drink alcohol for very personal reasons. Pisses me off when you get the "Why aren't you drinking" / "Oh you're so BORING have ONE come on" comments.

Don’t drink too much tonic, as quinine isn’t great for a baby

Too much quinine isn't good for anyone. But carry on with your pregnant body policing (see post above).

I’m not pregnancy body policing.

Same. People are getting annoyed with a pp talking about calculation and saying people should mind their business. Isn't it the same thing with the alcohol business? Why does OP need to defend herself for not drinking? Why should anyone bother someone who isn't drinking even if she was known to drink? So if you're a busybody enough to notice and carry on about someone not drinking, to the point that they need to find a good excuse for you, you're a busybody enough to calculate if she drank while pregnant when you find out. Same concept, different situations.

No one believes the anti booties excuse it’s basically like saying “I’m pregnant” I found appetiser in a wine glass works really well!

So acvording to some pps, when I went on a night out and wasn't drinking due to taking antibiotics for a kidney infection, everyone must have thought I was pregnant?

ParishSpinster · 29/08/2021 13:22

Wrt not drinking when pregnant, I genuinely couldn't. Wine, champagne, prosecco, gin, all tasted awful when i was pregnant. I also suffered really badly from heartburn from around 6wks and alcohol exacerbated it - I was at one wedding and had maybe 1/3 glass of champagne without thinking really and had raging heartburn for the rest of the day and night. It was awful. I was 14 weeks pregnant and sat swigging gaviscon and looked mournfully at the prosecco jelly they had for dessert.

So if you do fancy having a glass.of wine or whatever at the wedding, i would try beforehand to see if you can actually drink. Swigging from a gaviscon bottle in dark corners is a real giveaway of pregnancy if you are planning on hiding it.

This is the problem with British drinking culture. Anyone should be able to not drink for any reason without it raising questions!
