Just found out I'm 3 weeks pregnant and have weddings to attend !

I've just found out I'm expecting again.

I've not missed my period yet, so it's such early days. I have to attend a wedding in a couple of days and it's going to be so obvious if I don't drink. But I can't drink, right ? I know most women wouldn't suspect a pregnancy this early, so probably would drink- but I just can't do it, seeing as I know I am.

It will raise many eyebrows that I'm not drinking.

I also have three other weddings in the next few weeks ! It's going to be so tough and so obvious !! ( if I stay pregnant )

What kind of excuses work best??

You say you're expecting 'again' - do you have other DC?

If so, it's not going to be a huge shock/town scandal if you're pregnant to anyone, surely?

I tied myself in knots when I was pregnant trying to breathe in at work meetings etc, but really, would pals really care if you are pg?

bofski14 · 25/08/2021 13:36

Maybe best to not pretend to drink alcohol. Because when the baby is born, people will do the maths and some could make comments about how you were "drinking" while pregnant. I'd just go with the antibiotics fib myself.

People would seriously trouble themselves to think back to whether someone looked as though they were drinking or not at a wedding months before? Really?

So what if people do make comments? You either set them straight or ignore the weirdness of people working out exactly when you had sex and what might have been in your uterus at Uncle Bob's wedding.
villamariavintrapp · 25/08/2021 13:42

I agree there's no point in telling people it's 'antibiotics' as that basically means pregnant (that's why nobody asks what they're for-they know it's made up!) People won't add up the weeks, and OP said it's very early. Just don't make a big deal about it and people will assume you're drinking if that's what you normally do.

Demelza82 · 25/08/2021 13:45

I doubt anybody cares as much as you think they do. Just have tonic water with a slice Hmm

If they're the sort to be so attentive to the OP's drinking habits that they know when she's drinking or not, what's she's drinking and if she's lying about being on antibiotics...so much so that it's a big deal for the OP to just not drink or make a thing of it, then they're likely to be the sort of people to do the maths.

I just had soda water and lime and asked for it in one of those gin goblet glasses !!

She’s 3 weeks not months…
ParishSpinster · 25/08/2021 14:12

I've attended weddings when pregnant and hadn't told anyone yet. Options I used:

I drove - it was a PITA venue to get to so it made sense anyway.

I occasionally sipped at a glass of wine during the toasts.

Had a glass of wine poured at the table and drank water. Those weddings were during the summer so I was v v hot anyway.

Didn't make a fuss, really. Didn't draw attention. If anyone asked if I wanted a drink or a top up i said I just got one or that I was taking it easy, too old for day drinking these days. Basically, didn't make a big deal out of it.

If people guessed, they guessed. It was fine. Nobody said anything until after we told people I was pregnant and then they got to play the "oh I did wonder!" Game which nosy aunties always seem to like playing.

It's not a big deal.

Petardos · 25/08/2021 14:13

Well what about to tell that you have an infection and are on antibiotics if they ask?

ithinkilikeit · 25/08/2021 14:34

Antibiotics

queenatom · 25/08/2021 14:34

As someone who has chronic wisdom teeth infections (dental antibiotics are generally the ones you really can't drink on), I can confirm that people will think you are pregnant even if you aren't - it was probably only on Round 4 that people started to take me at face value!

Agree with others that the dummy drink and not saying anything is the best way to get through this.

ithinkilikeit · 25/08/2021 14:39

Now I’m worried every time I was actually on antibiotics people thought I was pregnant. Do people think women of childbearing age are what’s trying to get pregnant. Isn’t it more likely that someone is on antibiotics than they are to be pregnant?

SparkyBlue · 25/08/2021 14:41

I drank Heineken zero at an event and people took no notice. Or you could just say if asked yes you are but super early and you are nervous of things going wrong so please don't make a big fuss about it. I also did that on my last pregnancy and everyone was lovely as I was sick and miserable at 5 weeks and even without a bump I had that pregnancy look if that makes sense of huge boobs and being bloated.

CarryOnNurse20 · 25/08/2021 14:43

As you've already said OP #1 is drive.
When I've been pregnant but being discrete I've asked the bartender to make me lemonade to look like a G&T. They always do no bother and sometimes make it extra flouncy to make it look real. I've been complimented on my fancy gin choice many times!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 25/08/2021 14:48

just having a glass of prosecco or wine in your hand will make people assume you are drinking, and yes, make friends with the bartenders, they will happily make you a tonic water or lemonade to look like a gin or vodka.

Apart from the ones who made a manager come and have a word with me because they thought I had a bottle of gin under the table!! I was mortified, and so was she when I explained!!

GladAllOver · 25/08/2021 14:49

Just accept the first glass and take a sip. That won't hurt the baby. Carry it around and refuse any more because you're driving. Leave the glass somewhere when you go to the loo.
Don't use the antibiotic excuse - far too obvious.

torchh · 25/08/2021 14:56

@1forAll74

Why are you so bothered what other people think, just have a drink and enjoy it. You don't seriously think that all people abstain from booze when they are pregnant do you.
Hmm

Yes, most sensible women do @1forAll74 Hmm

Swimmum78 · 25/08/2021 15:14

If you've a few weddings and still need ideas. I bought non alcoholic wine and topped up my glass in the loos.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 25/08/2021 15:26

I mean, I wouldn't worry about it.

But it's the most commonly trotted out excuse that there is, so for a lot of people antibiotics = pregnant now.

Sadly the presumption that you are trying to have kids when you reach childbearing age still seems prevalant, in most places.

Yerra · 25/08/2021 15:36

and it is ok to have 1 drink, even 2 drinks. The no drinking whilst pregnant is really for those that drink alot and cannot stop.

GhostCurry · 25/08/2021 15:38

@WillaWeatherspoon

Don't pretend you're on antibiotics, it's like a PREGNANT klaxon going off. Just have something that looks like (but isn't) an alcoholic drink in front of you at all times, people don't pay that much attention so everyone will assume you're drinking.
This. Lol at the antibiotics excuse
Yutes · 25/08/2021 15:39

For the no alcohol antibiotics thing - it tends to be mouth infections where the antibiotics cause projectile vomiting.

Don’t drink too much tonic, as quinine isn’t great for a baby.
