In not wanting to hear swimmers...

Local sea swimmer club swim 9 slots a week on our local beach. Huge stretch of beach but for some reason swim opposite the closest houses (and a care home)..
The first slot is 6 am. Much noise... Enough to wake every member who sleeps at the front of our house!!
I have left a complaint of sorts on our local news page.
Hands up how many mners swim shouting Woo Woo at 6 am? 8 am? Or 8 pm? Isn't swimming a sedentary hobby?
Huge car park and access to the beach further along with no houses across the road. Senseless thoughtless people imo..
Rant over - been awake since, yep 6 A bloody am.
Angry

Why would they do that so close to homes ? Might have been better to speak to the organisers though rather than leaving a pa message online.

Sea swimming is great. Making a racket at 6am whilst swimming isn't, particularly as I presume it's adults not excited children on holiday. I sea swim but go on my own and just swim and quietly chat to people

vivainsomnia · 25/08/2021 10:51

They probably don't realise the noise carries over the sound of the waves. I'd go out once and ask them to keep it down. Sea swimmers are usually quite kind and considerate people, so that should do it.

SpindleWhorl · 25/08/2021 10:51

We have dog walkers who shriek across the street to each other every fucking morning at 6am at the moment.

Absolute selfish knobbers. I can't sleep with my window open now.

Dog walking = lovely.

Shrieking across a road at 6am in a residential area = arseholes.

How can swimming be 'sedentary'? Confused

KaptainKaveman · 25/08/2021 10:54

Maybe you mean 'solitary?

Dahlietta · 25/08/2021 10:55

I think the target word was probably 'sedate'

I was wondering this too...
Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 25/08/2021 11:02

I meant not a hobby that constitutes cheering - as in a quiet peaceful past time! See sleep deprivation is getting my words mixed up!!

Palavah · 25/08/2021 11:02

8am fine. 8pm fine. Just ask them to keep it down 6-8am.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 25/08/2021 11:02

I think we know what op means

I really don't.

Sedate doesn't really make sense either. Not to me anyway, not for sea swimming.

Do feel free to share your knowledge, instead of just trying to make out like people are being deliberately disingenuous.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/08/2021 11:05

Yanbu to expect an organised activity to respect local residents. You can swim without cheering.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 25/08/2021 11:05

Sea swimming isn't 'peaceful' - it's hard work! But I agree it doesn't need to be noisy. And it really shouldn't be at that time of morning, when people are still sleeping nearby.

Yanbu.

Hankunamatata · 25/08/2021 11:12

I would.complain directly to the club

titsintiers · 25/08/2021 11:18

Sedentary or sedate aren't really important in the context of this thread though. The swimmers are being inconsiderate buggers.

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 11:18

I’m an outdoor swimmer, although nowhere residential. Or sea.

They could be using that section of beach because it’s safest for currents and rips, or rocks, or is easiest access (many outdoor swimmers I know/know of have mobility issues which are eased by cold water).

They could be swimming at 6am to work around work or childcare commitments.

I’d drop them a line on their FB page or go an see them one morning and ask them to keep the noise didn’t before 8am. This is a perfectly reasonable request, and I bet they’ll comply.

ShinyMe · 25/08/2021 11:28

Re where they swim, as the post above says, not all bits of sea are the same. They need to take currents and tides and depth into account. If the safest bit is near the houses then no, they can't just go somewhere else. But yes, they could make an effort to be a bit quieter early in the morning. Easiest way to tackle it is to contact the organisers directly if it's an organised group.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/08/2021 12:18

Could you anchor a couple of inflatable sharks in the sea near your house?

Driftingblue · 25/08/2021 12:26

Your best bet is definitely contacting the club directly. They probably aren’t aware they are waking people up. Be polite and let them know which noises are traveling. That may fix the problem. If it doesn’t, then I would talk to your neighbors and see if it is impacting them as well and develop a joint strategy

SusieBob · 25/08/2021 12:53

Just go and talk to them. Not difficult. Leaving a passive aggressive comment on facebook is not going to work.

Pileonsally · 25/08/2021 13:04

Im an open water swimmer and had no idea us talking was carrying across the water until residents told us.
Once we were aware we were v v careful after that to whisper.
Majority of swimmers are lovely respectful adults.
You need to speak to them directly or message the club.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 25/08/2021 14:02

I didn't leave a message on fb. I left a simple one on local news page outlining the man who woo woo ed for an hour was unnecessary...
Not on fb but had to mention it somewhere!! Absolutely affecting my mh tbh. Lack of sleep is something I can't handle.
May send dh with a placard at 6 tomorrow..
Is STFU too pa??

Maybe...
Grin
Or maybe play the theme from Jaws via my Bluetooth speaker!

Interestingly (well maybe) we heard a conversation from occupents of Hot Air balloon that drifted over once and they were quite high up.
BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 14:31

No need to be PA until you’ve asked them nicely!
Give them a chance!
