In not wanting to hear swimmers...

Local sea swimmer club swim 9 slots a week on our local beach. Huge stretch of beach but for some reason swim opposite the closest houses (and a care home)..
The first slot is 6 am. Much noise... Enough to wake every member who sleeps at the front of our house!!
I have left a complaint of sorts on our local news page.
Hands up how many mners swim shouting Woo Woo at 6 am? 8 am? Or 8 pm? Isn't swimming a sedentary hobby?
Huge car park and access to the beach further along with no houses across the road. Senseless thoughtless people imo..
Rant over - been awake since, yep 6 A bloody am.

I think you’ve handled this wrong. Rather than politely call or leave a note or contact them on their social media pages you jumped to in person confrontation. It puts people in fight or flight however calmly or reasonably your DH might have approached them. They’re more likely to be stubborn dickheads about it now IME.

MrsBumm · 12/09/2021 12:05

Get up early, go down to the beach. Wait til they're all in the sea at 6.10am, then quickly chuck all their clothes & towels in the water Grin

MrsBumm · 12/09/2021 12:05

NB I don't really suggest you do this.

Bloodyavocadoagain · 12/09/2021 12:06

Once they have been made aware they can be heard at 6am they should have the decency to quieten down. There’s no need for yelling. They’re not being reasonable or respectful so a complaint to the council it is by the look of it. That shouldn’t be necessary but it seems the only thing left to do.

shockthemonkey · 12/09/2021 12:09

You can't ask swimmers to be quiet if you're happily shouting fishwife-style from your bedroom window.

5128gap · 12/09/2021 12:10

@KaptainKaveman

How can swimming be 'sedentary'? Confused
Thinking this. Got quite excited at the thought of an active hobby I could do sitting down!
Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 12/09/2021 12:10

I shouted at 10 am after being awake since 6 am all week.

With my council you do an online form and 2 week diary. Simple to do.
I expect they’re doing it opposite houses because it’s where they’ve parked their cars. Their convenience trumps discomfort for others.

GoodnightGrandma · 12/09/2021 12:13

Horse riders clip-clopping and chatting loudly from 6am where I live.
Dog barking loudly at 5.45am the other day on its walk.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 12/09/2021 12:15

Messaging the club is the thing to do. We have kayaking sessions in a swimming pool during the Winter. People complained about the noise in the carpark where people gathered to chat after the session (we closed out the pool and they closed the centre 15mins after we had to stop the session in the pool so there was no opportunity to socialise indoors).

We were told to keep it down and we did.

Bollindger · 12/09/2021 12:20

You know that song, I know a song that will get on your nerves,
Go down to the beach and blast that at them as they prepare to swim, and keep it going the whole time they swim, so their peaceful little event isn't as nice as it was, tell them anytime they swim by your house you will do this, Maybe get some of the neigbours to come and help.

ElizaDarcysDeeds · 12/09/2021 12:23

How annoying for you!
If there's a local residents' association or parish council, can you raise it with them? And contact your local MP. Your DH tried to be reasonable and they did not respond, so I'd contact everyone I could to complain. Sleep is important and so is quiet, enjoyment of your home. Flowers

LadyCatStark · 12/09/2021 12:24

@sirfredfredgeorge

Did they build the beach after you bought the house or before?

You knew it was there, beaches are obviously recreational places for people to use, YABU, just a poor choice of place to live if you can't deal with the noise of people using the adjacent space.

Don’t be ridiculous, it’s not the beach that’s making the noise, it’s the inconsiderate people that are using it at 6am. Would it be OK for someone to shout and whoop outside your house because the road was there before you were?
sloutside · 12/09/2021 12:29

Ridiculous. The OP is not expecting people to be quiet on the beach all day long. She is expecting, very reasonably, to not have people whooping and yelling at 6 am three times a week, waking up everyone who lives next to the beach.
It's very inconsiderate of the swimmers. Nobody would mind if they showed up, swam quietly and left.

Antinerak · 12/09/2021 12:33

Swimmers and cyclists are equally dickish. Yappy dogs are not far behind. We have all 3 near us but council have done nothing despite them all being on private land. Good luck!

SeriouslyISuppose · 12/09/2021 12:34

@BikeRunSki

I’m an outdoor swimmer, although nowhere residential. Or sea.

They could be using that section of beach because it’s safest for currents and rips, or rocks, or is easiest access (many outdoor swimmers I know/know of have mobility issues which are eased by cold water).

They could be swimming at 6am to work around work or childcare commitments.

I’d drop them a line on their FB page or go an see them one morning and ask them to keep the noise didn’t before 8am. This is a perfectly reasonable request, and I bet they’ll comply.

That seems reasonable.
ViceLikeBlip · 12/09/2021 12:38

11pm-7am are officially "quiet" hours (in the UK) So 6am is legally a noise nuisance. (unfortunately I think 7am might be fair game, which isn't really much better is it?!)

People from a swimming club running into the sea at 6 am shrieking on top of their voices is the problem here not what came first the beach or the house OP lives in.

It’s not like OP moved into a house where certain sounds are to be taken into account - near to a church with bells or alongside a rail track. Yes the beach came first but the behaviour of the club members using it at 6 am is not something OP could have been expected to factor in when moving in.

dottiedodah · 12/09/2021 12:47

I imagine they are unaware of this .Most swimmers should hopefully be a reasonable lot! So many people though seem unaware /dont care about early morning noises .Our friend is unwell ,and has an illness which impairs movement .5 am Revving the car engine ,shouting out and hooting for wife to hurry up .Friend explained issue to them .Couldnt care less ! Another has a Cockerel in a residential street! A quiet word to them should suffice

lottiegarbanzo · 12/09/2021 12:47

YANBU for being annoyed

YABU for failing to complain to the club itself.

YABU for posting PA whining on a local SM site. All that will do is wind people up and cause bad feeling, resentment and entrenchment. Shooting yourself in the foot there.

Complain in reasoned tones to the club. If no change, complain to the local Council's noise nuisance team. 6am is too early for disturbance on a week day, even more so on a Sunday.

PatchworkElmer · 12/09/2021 12:50

Are they a member of a wider/ national ‘club’, or is this just a local one? I swim with the Bluetits and would try contacting the ‘mothership’ as well as logging noise for the council etc.

CynsterBitch · 12/09/2021 12:53

The problem is you’ve spent a year stewing over this rather than just bring it up with them straight away, for the swimmers this is a recent issue. In fact they might think whoops we must have been excessively noisy last been, better make sure we go back to acting like we normally do.
They are not mind readers, PA posting on local media sites is neither here nor there

Yes, but they're not spurts clubs! Clubs running paid for activities have a responsibility to ensure they local bylaws- including noise restrictions at 6am.

You can't just run any group you like, doing as you please, because it's a beach!
