To have never stripped a hotel bed

rockaround · 24/08/2021 10:51

I've just been reading a post on Facebook about a man who always strips his bed before leaving his hotel. There's comment after comment (probably around 95%) of people saying that they always strip the bed too.

I always make sure the room is clean and tidy and I put the towels together but I have never stripped the bed. Does everyone do this and I am a bad guest?

YABU- stop being lazy and strip the bed
YANBU - I don't do this either

I haven’t just because I know the staff stick to a routine. I do leave the place clean and tidy and in central parcs strip the beds.

ElizaDoolots · 24/08/2021 13:03

No, I never do this. It’s part of the service you’re paying for.

I did a summer working in hotel housekeeping and found it actually didn’t really help when people did this, it just confused the routine. I found the same in waitressing when people would think they’re being helpful stacking all of the plates on the table, it actually makes it much harder to clear.

Nancydrawn · 24/08/2021 13:17

No. I throw out the rubbish, make sure all towels are tub-adjacent, and leave a nice tip.

ConstanceGracy · 24/08/2021 13:27

Nope, never.
Have done it in villas / air bnb’s though

starrynight87 · 24/08/2021 13:34

I make sure everything is clean and tidy, but no I would not strip the bed.

LST · 24/08/2021 14:28

@TheRebelle

It makes me think of the type of people who stack their dirty plates in a restaurant, they think they’re being helpful but are probably causing more hassle than if they just let people do their jobs.
Literally not the same at all. I used to find it incredibly helpful if people put their used plates to one end with the cutlery on top. I do it everywhere we go. It's a lot less awkward than a serving staff leaning over trying to reach everything
MolyHolyGuacamole · 24/08/2021 15:15

Never. Not a hotel or holiday lets. But I've read posts on here where people strip the beds, hoover, mop, dust and polish! Well not literally, but definitely put in way too much effort.

rockaround · 24/08/2021 15:24

Thanks everyone you have confirmed I am not lazy and the hundreds of comments were lies. One of the comments said, 'I was a chambermaid and some people don't even empty their kettle' Hmm

I wouldn't do it in a hotel - I make sure everything is in the bin or anything that might be recyclable e.g. bottles, is next to the bin, fold the duvet back, hang towels up in the bathroom or leave used ones in the bath and put used mugs / glasses together, and put things like the hairdryer back where they came from. I like to think I'm a good guest!

Lweji · 24/08/2021 15:33

No. Why would I?
Do these people also make their beds every day? Grin

Well, I might if I had stained the sheets and didn't want it to be obvious to the hotel cleaning staff. Wink

An in emptied kettle was the least of our worries - the state some people left their rooms in was truly revolting, and so the thought of having to strip their beds too was grim. I’m sure no-one on MN leaves their hotel room in a similar way though.

I have read these too. Some people take A LOT of pride on their cleaning skills Confused

I hoover and mop holiday let's and make sure the bathroom is clean. I have dogs and kids though.

It literally takes 20 mins when we're leaving

I just don’t get why anyone would do this, you pay to go on holiday to relax. It’s also just wasted effort because they’ll be getting the cleaners in to do it all again anyway so you’ve not really even saved anyone a job.

2bazookas · 24/08/2021 16:18

I've never stripped a hotel bed but I have done in some holiday cottages whose owner and/or helper had gone the extra mile to be kind to us. It's a small return.

Nixandwotsit · 24/08/2021 16:26

Having managed holiday cottages some years back... it didn't help me to find beds stripped. As mentioned above, I wanted to be able to see if any of the linen needed extra attention. If I found the washing machine going it was a right pain in the posterior - the linen was washed and ironed away from the cottages. Cleaning - we were going to do a full and thorough clean regardless of what we might guess the customers had done. So that is a pointless thing to do as well.

Do you go a full week at home without hoovering though?
Confiscatedpopit · 24/08/2021 16:34

No, never. Towels in the bath, all rubbish in the bin, glasses and cups next to the kettle area- that’s it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/08/2021 16:36

As someone who temped as a chambermaid after uni I can tell you they are lying.

Unfashionable · 24/08/2021 16:39

In normal times, I stay in a lot of hotels and certainly don’t strip the beds, for the same reason I don’t use self service checkouts.

Hotel housekeeping staff are overwhelmingly women who need their jobs and rely on their wages to support their families. By doing their work for them, I am not doing them a favour. I am providing their bosses with a reason to cut their hours so they earn less.

isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 16:42

you can normally pay for a mid-stay clean when you rent a holiday place.

Nixandwotsit · 24/08/2021 16:43

The thing is - if the outgoing customers "do the work for them" what are the cleaning staff going to do? If they take some pride in their work, as we did with our cottages, they will carry on as usual and do it all again. Some people are quite skanky with their "cleaning" and will use the same cloth to polish the toilet as they use on the sink and bath, just an example. Regardless of how things looked superficially we'd still be disinfecting, mopping, dishwashing and washing the crockery and kitchen stuff.

I bag rubbish and put it out. Clear up anything drastic like maybe wiping crumbs off worktops. Then leave.

Nixandwotsit · 24/08/2021 16:44

"Do you go a full week at home without hoovering though?"

Yes I do, absolutely and especially when I'm on holiday. We don't cause that much dirt. Grin

HalzTangz · 24/08/2021 16:50

I've always stripped the bed, put towels together and cleaned table and bed units

Angel2702 · 24/08/2021 16:51

I’ve always done it automatically without thinking. Probably as we stay in self catered more often than hotels where it’s usually requested beds are stripped and towels placed in the bath.
