To ask about emails you've received, when someone has the same name as you but puts in your email address...

I've seen about this before, someone with the same name as you accidentally puts your email address down instead of theirs. Usually it's because there is a . involved and missed.

A few months ago I got an email from the police thanking me for my report about a covid breach (I emailed back saying the name was correct but I had not reported anyone).

Now to today. I apparently have purchased and insured a dog in America, I've also signed up for alerts for all missing dogs in the area!!! Again we have the same first name and last name, but I live in the uk and definitely don't own a dog! This is one of them emails that you cannot reply too, and the number is (of course) American. I am not calling America, so the alerts will stay. (I've had 6 emails in the last hour about registering the dog, what dog it is and how I've set these alerts up!

It’s happened to me a couple of times. I frightened the living daylights out of them by finding them on Facebook and messaging them with all of their personal details, saying I have access to their credit cards and can buy stuff online using their accounts, unless they stop compromising their own security by using my email address. Seems harsh but I was sick of it and wanted to make sure they’d be more careful in future.

Merryoldgoat · 24/08/2021 00:20

Can you not email the correct person and tell them?

I found the one from the police report, it was scary how alike we are actually. It freaked me out.

Not likely to happen to me as there are fewer than 100 people in the with with my last name due to a clerical error when one of my husband’s ancestors arrived at Ellis Island and the last name was recorded with a spelling mistake that has stuck (and I’m related by marriage to them all) and only one with the exact first name and last name combination that I have and that’s me.

Sounds like the same insurance company we have for our dogs. There’s a chat function on the website and they are very helpful. It’s not even 4.30 pm here now so they will be open.

InaccurateDream · 24/08/2021 00:27

I had a thread about it. Can’t remember if it was under this name or not. I didn’t find the American one who annoyed me the most (though I did get her address) but she seems to have stopped for now. I still get loads of insurance quotes etc for other people though.

I got one with a formal written warning from HR. In my case I had the same initials and surname as the intended recipient but our first names were actually different. HR were not happy bunnies when I told them.

I once had a booking confirmation for a Toyota garage somewhere in Australia. And once someone emailed to ask if I really had the same name as them (it's unusual)

Mcginn · 24/08/2021 00:47

Yep was getting designs and quotes for a kitchen!

GrimDamnFanjo · 24/08/2021 00:49

Endless PTA info from the USA. Details on their house buying issues...

starfishmummy · 24/08/2021 00:51

I was invited on a group night out for a curry. I emailed the sender who replied that I could go if I wanted to!! It was about 120 miles away!!

They could have been mine Blush the ikea online planner wouldn't let me reset my contact details and couldn't get to a store in lockdown!

I got a job offer for someone in America. And again when she changed job. There's only one letter difference between my and my dad's email so he got a few hen party invitations over the years.

TempNameChangexx · 24/08/2021 00:59

I've had this - an email about a Clarks shoe order, I can't remember the middle couple - they all used my email instead of their own.
The latest one was about an order from AO.com where they gave my mobile instead of their own - I called AO and they said they'd sorted it out but I still got all the texts reminding me when my oven was arriving.
The delivery driver even called to check where he was delivering too - I had to explain, again, the actual customer had given the wrong details,....

A vet sent me the tumour scan results for my namesake's horse Elsa.

The good news was that it was benign!

My ex-husband had a funny one a few years back, from a woman in the US who was emailing her adult son to complain about his behaviour around the house - involved eating all of the chicken from the fridge, not doing laundry, staying out til the small hours, being locked out and having to sleep on the porch. She sounded most disappointed and it was quite funny.

I had one last year from a cinema, again in the US, showing a rota of staff member's shifts for the following month. I replied to the sender explaining that I was in the UK and didn't work in a cinema - we had a good chat, she seemed lovely!

Noodledoodledoo · 24/08/2021 19:44

I randomly get things for someone in Scotland, quotes for work, library book reminders all sorts!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 24/08/2021 19:51

I've got a relatively uncommon first name & rare surname (its one where the spelling is essentially made up as it's an anglicisation of a foreign name).

It has its advantages - never mistaken for anyone else, but there's no hiding behind it.

Miliao · 24/08/2021 20:00

I have a pretty rare name, but I get emails from America for someone with the same name. I had a Covid vaccine invite, was asked to pick my dog up etc. They’ve obviously given out this email, and it’s a gmail so it doesn’t matter where you put a dot, or if you leave it out, it all goes to the same address. How can you not know you’re own email?!! I’ve had a lot of their relatives’ photos too!

rosesinmygarden · 24/08/2021 20:06

I've had an email asking if i can bring a bottle of wine to a birthday dinner and advising me that Gran is bring an apple crumble.

I'm also apparently on the creche and refreshment rotas for a methodost church in America.

Hermanfromguesswho · 24/08/2021 20:14

I got someone with the same names payslips once. I’d had a few emails previously with order confirmations on of purchases but I’d ignored those.
I looked her up via her employer and it turned out she was in charge of data protection 🤣
I emailed her and she wasn’t that fussed. Then I got more email confirmations of her online purchases (she likes sports wear). I got fed up and followed a link on one to cancel the order. She hasn’t done it since 😂

Clem4579 · 24/08/2021 20:15

I’ve had people send emails meant for me to the wrong person, but the error has been theirs. I’ve actually given them my namemiddleinitialsurname.co.uk and they’ve missed out the important middle initial.

2reefsin30knots · 24/08/2021 20:16

During lockdown I accidentally emailed individual school work for an autistic member of my class to an address that was wrong by a digit in a number.

It turned out the recipient was an American parent lockdown-schooling an autistic child of her own. We had quite a nice chat.

Terrible from a GDPR point of view, although fortunately no personal details of the actual family were shared. Blush

VioletCharlotte · 24/08/2021 20:18

My email address is [email protected] (but with my real name) There is also a [email protected]. We've both accidentally emailed one another when we've been trying to email photos to ourselves (nothing embarrassing luckily!) The other Violet seems lovely, we've had a nice chat on email and a bit of a laugh about it.
