To be fed up at still having regular periods at 54?

I've had enough now!!!
I've had extremely irregular painful periods for most of my life (ended up in a and e a few times, often blacked out with the pain, nausea, vomiting) which improved after I had my kids 14 years ago but still irregular. Then for the last four years, I have had a 28 day cycle............it feels like the universe is having a laugh..............
I just want out now!!!

Apt thread for me. I'm starting sequential HRT very soon. I've been putting up with menopause symptoms for years now. Periods of full blown insomnia, hot flushes and migraines. I'm not sure if it's related but I'm also having joint issues.
I really hope the sequential hrt helps. I'm bummed out that I'll get periods on it.

billy1966 · 24/08/2021 08:39

I am into year 9 of the menopause🙄

My symptoms had largely abated in the past 18months, particularly the hot flushes but they have come back with a bang in tge last couple of weeks.

I am not happy.

Scarlettpixie · 24/08/2021 09:52

I am 49 and have been taking the mini pill since my early 40s. My periods were horrendous and have been non existent since going onto cerezette. It's fantastic!

igelkott2021 · 24/08/2021 09:54

Blimey at 54! Oh dear, poor you. I hope I won't be here in five years time complaining I still have periods (I am now 49). What on earth is the point of them past the age of about 42!

Rubyupbeat · 24/08/2021 10:03

Mine have just stopped at 57, 3 months clear so far.
My gp had hers until 62!!

CounsellorTroi · 24/08/2021 10:13

I was all done by 50. Physically it was a walk in the park, I’ve never had heavy periods anyway and they just got lighter and lighter. Hot flushes and night sweats few and far between. Mentally a bit of a car crash. Awful mood swings and anxiety.

All these comments are what prove to me that whoever created humans was male! If he was female he would have provided a switch that we could turn to 'off' when we finished having children and no longer needed eggs every month Grin

I'm 52 and hoping every month that it will be the last one - since having a coil fitted 4 years ago my periods have been lighter and much more manageable. My mum had her last period at 52 as did my maternal grandmother so fingers crossed! I've been getting the achy joints and memory fuzz for several months but not a lot else . A friend of mine is the same age, had her last period 17 months ago and no symptoms or anything since! I want to be like that!!!!

Guacamole001 · 24/08/2021 10:29

I relate op mine stopped last year in August at the age of 56. My cycles were erratic for 3 years though after years of clockwork cycles from the age of 11. Coming up to a year now as the final one was end of August 2020...
Such a joy but the skin ages more so we have that challenge instead!

emmathedilemma · 24/08/2021 10:32

I hear you, mid 40’s and the prospect of this for another decade fills me with fear! Had my
fibroids treated, tried the coil, tried all pills, never bled so much in my life. I’m done with this womb, it’s serving me no purpose other than grief!!

If he was female he wouldn’t have made some women infertile and have to go through all that pain and mess for all those years for nothing.

JollyHostess · 24/08/2021 11:27

I'm 54 and on continuous HRT, I get a couple of periods a month, lucky me. Usually one is quite light and the other ones has the PMS symptoms, days of cramping etc.
I'm permanently in a pre or post period state.

SapatSea · 24/08/2021 12:00

I'm 57 - regular periods until last year, now erratic and when they come are shorter in length but I have flooding -so much I can't even walk across the room without being drenched in blood (before tranexamic kicks in).
I haven't had a period for 84 days now - so figures crossed. However, for at least 10 years I've had perimenpausal symptoms of chronic migraine, MAV, some hot flushing and waking at night brain fog etc. throughout the month. I've been told that even when I'm through to menopause the hot flushes, migraine etc may well continue for the rest of my life - greatSad

Thomasina79 · 24/08/2021 12:21

Mine took ages to go and they were awful for a while, every two weeks and very heavy. My doctor referred me to gynae who performed laser treatment to remove the lining. Fantastic!! It was only a day case (under anaesthetic) and did the trick. I felt like I got my life back. The other symptoms stayed though sadly. You can’t get pregnant afterwards which for me aged 53 was definitely the case! Not sure why this procedure is not well known.

Chiffandbip · 24/08/2021 17:26

@MaMelon she was actually fine. Her son is now 5 and good friends with my daughter!

christinarossetti19 · 24/08/2021 17:31

Well, this is an eye opener...

I'm nearly 52 having regular periods and have been anticipating them stopping pretty soon.

Sounds like they might not.

One plus is surely that longer production of oestrogen is good for your bones and heart?

Please let that me true.

Struggling to think of another, although sertraline has sorted out most of my PMS (been on it years).

emilylily · 24/08/2021 17:37

You're not being unreasonable as it sounds like yours have been fairly hideous with nausea, pain etc. BUT as someone worried that I might be perimenopausal/have premature ovarian failure in my early 30s, I'm sort of hoping I'm wrong and that I'm still having periods at 50.

AWanderingMinstrel · 24/08/2021 17:38

56 and still going strong here! Mirena being fitted tomorrow🎉🎉

user1471538283 · 24/08/2021 18:08

Oh you poor thing. Mine finally buggered off when I was 51. 40 years of the bastard things. I had night sweats and a foggy head but I'm now on HRT and its marvellous.

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 24/08/2021 19:32

My thoughts would be, be careful what you wish for OP! I was like you and couldn't wait to hit the menopause, only to find that the frequent hot flushes and disturbed nights were even worse!

crimsonlake · 24/08/2021 20:01

Stopped at 57 here and I felt very much like you OP I was sick of them. I missed the odd one for a few months before hand and then it suddenly stopped. I think in a way though they help keep you youthful, I certainly feel as if I have started to show signs of aging more.

PrincessNutella · 24/08/2021 20:14

I don't blame you, OP. What's the bloody point.

LadyDanburysCane · 24/08/2021 22:31

@AJGranny

Wait. What. HRT gives you periods?! 😮 Fuck. That. Shit.
My GP said that as I gave a uterus I have to have “periods” to mitigate the increased risk of uterine cancer.

I am on continuous oestrogen with progesterone two weeks every month. So for just under two weeks my key uncomfortable symptoms (dry mouth, swollen tongue, mouth ulcers) improve and then from day 2 of progesterone and then decreasing slowly after stopping my mouth symptoms improve. My other “symptoms” of no body hair, weight gain, joint pain and brain fog have neither imoroved or worsened though.

LadyDanburysCane · 24/08/2021 22:37

Correction….. when on the progesterone my mouth symptoms worsen so bad that after one week I am practically living on pain killers and can’t eat properly…. I have to set timers on my phone to make sure I don’t take paracetamol more than four hourly ans some days my tongue is so swollen that my speech is affected.

Zerrin13 · 24/08/2021 23:10

Nearly 56 and haven't had a period for a year so hopefully I'm done

ThreeLittleDots · 25/08/2021 00:13

"My GP said that as I gave a uterus I have to have “periods” to mitigate the increased risk of uterine cancer"

Not quite the case. Those on HRT with a uterus have to take progesterone to thin the womb lining to reduce the risk of uterine cancer. There is no physical need for a bleed.

OP - you can take Cerazette mini-pill which prevents ovulation (thus periods) in 97% of cycles.
