To be fed up at still having regular periods at 54?

UmamiMammy · 23/08/2021 18:00

I've had enough now!!!
I've had extremely irregular painful periods for most of my life (ended up in a and e a few times, often blacked out with the pain, nausea, vomiting) which improved after I had my kids 14 years ago but still irregular. Then for the last four years, I have had a 28 day cycle............it feels like the universe is having a laugh..............
I just want out now!!!

I'm 57 and finally getting there. Periods now 4 or 5 months apart, had 3 last year. Occasional hot flush and night sweat. Bit fed up really, hoping it would all be done and dusted (pun not intended!) by now.

JaggedNail · 23/08/2021 20:45

I'm 51 and all my life my period has just turned up when it fancied it, anything from 3-6 weeks, but in the last 3/4 years I've suddenly become a very regular 28 days too. What's that about?

ThinWomansBrain · 23/08/2021 20:51

I had mirena fitted because of heavy periods - they stopped immediately.
I had it removed after about six years (I think they're effective for about four).
I assume I've had the menopause

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 23/08/2021 21:25

Same age as you. I too have always had regular periods. Very heavy, painful, regular periods. Still do. 28 day cycle. No menopause symptoms that I am aware of. Had my last baby at 44. Thought he was my last egg! Obviously not.

tillytoodles1 · 23/08/2021 21:31

Mine stopped at 50 and I'm very glad they did. Poor you.

3totheright4totheleft · 23/08/2021 21:35

I'm 51 and hadn't had one since March so I thought this was it. Was so gutted when it turned up this month. I loved having no periods, the hot flushes didn't bother me much and I felt really fit and happy. Now I just feel draggy.

Melassa · 23/08/2021 22:02

I’m 55 and thought I had my last one last October, I started getting hot flushes in January so I really thought that was it. Started HRT 3 weeks ago with continuous progesterone and I’ve just had a period pop up after all these months. It doesn’t seem like a withdrawal bleed, more like a normal period (or as normal as an over 50 period can be), so maybe it was going to happen despite the HRT, not because of it? All my family have had late menopauses so it could be. I had thought it was over and I could safely wear white jeans without looking at the calendar (or just trying to guess based on how bloated and farty I feel). Oh well.

Mrsblobbyspants · 23/08/2021 22:40

I went through exactly the same thing at the same age. Regular periods right up to December last year then absolutely nothing since. No winding down, no irregular bleeding. They just stopped. Strangely, I "know" that I will never have a period again. I just feel different! Thank goodness for that.

PearlyBird · 23/08/2021 22:42

I wish you could put that feeling in to words!

I started taking the mini pill back to back just before I turned 50 because of ''flooding'' so 18 months later I'm still on the mini pill and scared to stop taking it.

Cottagepieandpeas · 23/08/2021 22:49

@MaMelon

I’m with you! 52 and still as regular as clockwise. I did have 7 weeks between my periods last month and got really excited in case that was the end of them but no, it’s reappeared, bigger and better than ever before Confused
We are clearly twins @MaMelon - exactly the same here. Also 52, regular as clockwork until the last time / current period when the gap was 42 days & it’s heavier than ever 😩
CorianderBee · 23/08/2021 23:06

@Undisclosedlocation

Be careful what you wish for. At 56 I’ve finally stopped for the past four months. Brilliant, I thought. Then 2 weeks ago the bloody hot flushes started! Not had a full nights sleep since. Apparently they can last a few years - err I’ll go back to periods then, thanks!
Get an ice roller from Amazon!

I use it as skincare and got my mum one. She tells me she's recommended them to all her friends for their hot flushes 😂 Says she wishes I'd bought her it a year ago

Nsky · 24/08/2021 00:23

I would happily have had periods longer, menopause at 45, very bad, hrt not allowed.
57 hormonal depression, be careful what you wish for

I hope it's true for you but I went 15 months and then had one, then another 8 months or so...Sad

TempNameChangexx · 24/08/2021 00:51

I'll be 60 is just over 4 months time, been on HRT for a couple of years after my periods finally stopped after years of flooding.
My periods have just restarted.
The (male) consultant basically said that's just how it is.....
Gutted.

DramaAlpaca · 24/08/2021 00:56

Oh God, I feel for you all still having periods in your 50s. I got a Mirena at 46 as my cycle had gone haywire and never had another one. Got it taken out at 54 and kept my fingers crossed I wouldn't get another period. I didn't, three years on I'm definitely done. It's a bit weird not knowing when I actually reached menopause though. I got asked by a medical professional recently and felt a bit daft that I didn't know. I just told them to put down 51 as that's the average.

Topseyt · 24/08/2021 01:21

I am 55 and have been on Zoladex injections for the last four months to try to shut down my extremely reluctant ovaries and finally tip me into a much needed menopause. So far it seems to be working. I have two further injections left after which time will tell.

I've had years of extremely heavy flooding periods and can absolutely take no more. A mirena coil was tried for over a year and made things much, much worse.

If HRT so often brings periods back (and I have read that it often does) then I will never take it unless they give me a hysterectomy. I'm just too mentally scarred by my monthly bloodbath. I had absolute haemorrhages and they were frightening. I'm using Menopace instead.

AJGranny · 24/08/2021 01:49

Wait. What. HRT gives you periods?! 😮
Fuck.
That.
Shit.

memberofthewedding · 24/08/2021 02:09

I got so fed up having periods that I began taking the pill and not stopping the tablets for several years! When I did eventually stop the periods never returned. Woopeeee!

LimeRedBanana · 24/08/2021 02:14

54?? 😩

I am 47 and sick of the sight of mine. I had to have blood tests recently, and asked for a check on menopause to be included.

No sign of it, apparently. 😣

Plumtree391 · 24/08/2021 02:18

I always had heavy and irregular periods (except when on the pill and those aren't proper periods anyway), which became fairly regular in my forties. I seemed to do everything back to front but I was pleased for several years of relative regularity. I had my last one aged 51.5 and wasn't sorry to see the back of them.

A friend of mine had her last period aged 56 so, op, you could still have a couple of years to go!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/08/2021 06:00

@AJGranny

Wait. What. HRT gives you periods?! 😮 Fuck. That. Shit.
No it doesn't. If you've not had a period for a year, you'd be on continuous HRT, and wouldn't have a period. I had only gone 8 months without a period (at 56) so needed the sequential type of HRT, on which you have a withdrawal bleed, similar to the bleed you have on the pill. @Topseyt's experience is horrible, but not typical.
Meruem · 24/08/2021 06:46

52 here and still regular as clockwork. I hate it. I sometimes feel I can’t take it anymore. I bleed so heavily and feel so crap when they come. I’ll probably give it another few months and then go and see my GP if they haven’t stopped. I need to do something as I can’t last years like this.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 24/08/2021 07:02

Someone told me menopause takes 7 years to complete from its first signs... don't know if that's true?

49 and sick to death of periods. I want my menopause, and I want it now!
I've never had (or wanted) kids and really wish I could go back and tell my 18yo self to pay for a private hysterectomy. (I'd break even with the cost of all the pads, ruined clothing, ruined bedding, extra laundry etc)

Doodledoop · 24/08/2021 07:14

Another one who had irregular periods all my life and at age of 52 now regular monthlies. Mine are quite light though so not a huge issue just a bit bemusing.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/08/2021 07:16

I had an early menopause. I'd swap with you.
