To think husband should help daughter move flat?

Our middle dd is at university and is moving from halls into a privately rented place with some friends. She’s been home over the summer as moved out of halls in June.

Since she signed for the new house with her friends, back in April, we knew that the move in day was Thursday. She’s mentioned this numerous times, and we agreed we’d take her and all her stuff back to her uni city on that day.

Previously they were all in the same catered halls, and so didn’t own any kitchen stuff. Dd has been responsible for buying all of this as we have the room to store it at home before move in. Obviously the other students are paying for it too, we just have it here.

She is the lead tenant, and so she needs to be the one to go and collect the keys. She’s an organised girl and has an appointment booked for 1pm to get the keys.

Her other flatmates are from abroad, and extended their stay in halls to Thursday and so are moving out of one place straight into the other.

Now just a few days before move in, my husband has announced that he can’t do Thursday as he is going to watch a football match.

AIBU to think he is being selfish, and as this has been in the calendar for months, that he can forgo one of his many football matches? He argues that she can go up by train and he will take her stuff up separately, the next day. She’s not happy as she was excited about moving in an decorating, plus we have all the kitchen stuff and bedding here. I’ve told dh that he can pay for her train fair.

@rwalker

She goes on the train and gets her stuff the next day . Fair compromise I thought he was refusing all together and leaving her high and dry .
I'd agree it was a fair compromise if he had been injured or unable to drive. However, it's not a fair compromise in the circumstances. He agreed to take her, and now he's bailing because of a football match.
TheCanyon · 21/08/2021 18:54

Do you have a friend that can help instead?

My dad was supposed to help me move into halls 3 hours away, but ended up in the huff with me for getting my tongue pierced and fucked off out so mum asked her boss/friend to help instead.

godmum56 · 21/08/2021 19:00

that's fine. HE pays for man and minibus for you both to travel on comfort to the residence and to bring you home again. He has let her down, its up top him to fix it

Becles · 21/08/2021 19:01

Was it a promise to take her or did your dd assume he would?

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2021 19:01

So what’s she supposed to sleep in? Or is she supposed to take her duvet, pillows and bed linen on the train? She’ll have no kettle or mugs, no towels.

So sorry @bannanaskin, it’s a really unfair, rubbish stunt to pull.

@milliepop

What team is this? No-one plays on a Thursday?
Yes they do
WhenISnappedAndFarted · 21/08/2021 19:04

He's being a selfish twat, forget the football he's promised his daughter so he's got to take her

doscervesas · 21/08/2021 19:18

I would be disappointed in a DC not fulfilling a commitment.

How much worse when it's the parent.

NailsNeedDoing · 21/08/2021 19:21

That’s mean of him. It’s worth reminding him he’ll need her when she’s old, and she won’t forget the feeling of being let down by him.

Viviennemary · 21/08/2021 19:22

He needs to do it as he has already agreed.

Ilovewolfblass · 21/08/2021 19:24

Your husband is a bell end.
Ask his friends and family to help you, just so they know he’s a bell end to shame him.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 21/08/2021 19:25

He'd let his DD down to watch a football match?? Don't do a fuckin thing for him so he 'stands on his own two feet'!

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/08/2021 19:29

He's a dick. But you know that.

ArtfulScreamer · 21/08/2021 19:32

It's stories like this that make me miss my lovely dad all the more he once drove from Hull to Liverpool Airport in the snow to pick me up and ended up having to wait for 5 hours as the flight was delayed before we drove home and didn't get in until 4am.

TripleSeptic · 21/08/2021 19:32

As a daughter, and a mother of a daughter, I'm really annoyed with your husband. PP is right, I don't think he should expect his daughter to come running when he needs assistance in his 70s and 80s. I'd do anything within my power to get her there on the day she has planned. I'd hire a taxi, ask a friend, and I'd tell DH that he's a complete arse and has let his daughter down. He's made this commitment then dropped her for football. How has he been since your op and recovery? Is he helpful in other ways, is this a one off, or is he always a selfish shit?

ilovesooty · 21/08/2021 19:33

@milliepop

St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Spurs are all at home. Europa League matches are played on Thursdays.
ilovesooty · 21/08/2021 19:35

If he promised to take her though, he should do as he agreed.

TheUndoingProject · 21/08/2021 19:35

He sounds like a total shit. He made a commitment to his child and he should honour it, not stand her up at the last minute because he’s had a better offer.

Beamur · 21/08/2021 19:39

This is the kind of dickish stunt my Dad would pull. I'm in my 50's and barely speak to him. He used to be an arse about taking/collecting me from university. That was 30 years ago and I am still pissed off about it!
Can she collect the keys the following day? Or could one of the other tenants do it on her behalf?
I think it's really really poor if your DH to prioritise seeing a football match over this. Shit parenting.

Embracelife · 21/08/2021 19:40

He has to arrange alternative since you cannot do this due to injury so he can call and arrange a van removal and pay for it

saleorbouy · 21/08/2021 19:42

So he's bailing out of a job her agreed to for 90min of sport.... Not a particularly loyal thing to do.

dontshootmeforthis · 21/08/2021 19:55

He should take her. Surely she can't go on the train as she will have to take everything she needs for herself and the house!

dontshootmeforthis · 21/08/2021 19:58

Most parents get choked up when their kids go to uni and don't just go off to a football match instead.

And just remember that, because of your husband, she will be in no rush to return to see you!

Don't let him get away with this!

Francienolan · 21/08/2021 20:05

I once had a boyfriend at uni who took a gap year and started after me. His mother was pleased he got in, and then was eye rolling and sneering when he asked for a lift. He ended up getting the train with his duvet and things, and didn't forget it for a long time. I'm glad your son has one supportive parent.

messybun101 · 21/08/2021 20:09

I think those football tickets would be taking a mysterious trip through the washing machine. Although I guess everything is done on mobiles now.

Honestly, the mobile would be going for a dip if it was me. Why's he being such a prick?
