Is anyone else considering switching to a life of militant environmentalism

Me and DH are absolutely petrified and can no longer in any good conscience collide in the selfish shitshow that is modern life destroying the plannet. We are thinking of in the next few years
-selling most/all of our possessions
-selling the house
-moving to a small shack in the woods
-we would forrage for food and drink from a well
-we would use no modern technology and essentially shun the outside world.
While this might seem radical we are willing to bravely make this sacrifice to save our glorious planet. Is anyone else considering this?

Needapoodle · 21/08/2021 08:09

LoislovesStewie · 21/08/2021 08:10

Hope you have fun foraging for your quinoa, or tofu!

midgemagneto · 21/08/2021 08:12

If the op was really frightened then they might

Buy a few jumpers and thermal vests to turn their heating down until they can afford a heat pump

Buy some good walking shoes snd a bike and slow their life down by cutting activities that leave you popping out in the car all the time

Give up most meat snd diary

Only fly once every few years

reduce how often we replace or buy more things

All these things will make us richer , healthier and happier unlike ops sackcloth and ashes approach

DogFoodPie · 21/08/2021 08:14

Militant environmentalism is something like what Greta Thunberg does, campaigning and activism.

HollyGrail · 21/08/2021 08:29

Big corporations make waste, produce plastic, destroy the environment, etc, why do we "recycle" so much? I'm not making those items, are you?

No but we are buying the stuff they produce - visit any dump aka recycling centre. So many people rant about the oil companies but use the oil and gas in their cars, heating systems, any plastics in your home? (that comes from oil too). People are naive or what?

HollyGrail · 21/08/2021 08:35

A piece of wooded land next to the nearby river was on the market pre-Covid, I remember laughing at whoever was daft enough to buy it , as half of it floods once every few years depending on weather.
I now regularly see a car parked through the gate. I think they are camping but might have made a hut. I missed a trick there. think it was on at 45,000. Planning laws have changed and non permanent builds are allowed in the countryside.

MuscleTherapy · 21/08/2021 08:35

Yeah, I give you 3 months.

MuscleTherapy · 21/08/2021 08:37

By the way, interested to know where you're going to find the small shack and the well?

chestnutshell · 21/08/2021 08:40

No but I do understand the feeling of utter hopelessness in the face of climate change. I hate that I’m so complicit in the destruction of the planet and I’m taking steps where I can. Part of the helplessness I feel though is that my personal contribution is so flippin small and until governments and multi-nationals do something drastic, what I do is futile.

TheMoth · 21/08/2021 08:43

No. I'm partial to a roadside blackberry, but there's a little old couple by me who've decimated the hedges already.

Audit · 21/08/2021 08:45

@PickAChew

How would selling your house and the things you already have help the environment?

What consequences would you forsee from all 63 million brits moving into the woods and foraging?

@ugzbugz Loads on tiktok live 'off grid'...

I'm intrigued to know how they do this, surely a tiktoker needs a computer, electricity, the Internet and loads of people to watch the stuff they produce?

On this basis I've been 'living off grid' for years... (except for producing pointless videos) Hmm

lifehappened · 21/08/2021 08:47

Lol

Corporations only produce because of demand. Changing our product use and buying habits will have a material effect on production.

With which institute would you invest the money and where would they place it?

Which leaves do you use to wipe your arse in Winter when it’s frosty?

What is an effective natural tampon?

When your eyesight fails what do you use to help you see enough for foraging?

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 21/08/2021 08:52

God no.

ufucoffee · 21/08/2021 08:53

Nope

bagelsandoranges · 21/08/2021 08:54

Troll thread. "militant environmentalism"??!
That's clearly DM speak....

liveforsummer · 21/08/2021 08:54

That's not what militant means. What long term benefit/impact on the planet do you feel you as an individual doing this will have? Why get rid of things already made and bought - surely best to use them all till the end of their lives and never buy more? Do you have any concept of the reality of your idea? I'd assume not!

Oogachuckachopsy · 21/08/2021 08:55

Crack on. But any money you’d either be dead within the week from eating something poisonous, or booked into the local Travelodge.

Marriedtothesilverfox · 21/08/2021 08:55

It doesnt sound very practical. I dont think you’ll last long on foraged food.

Can you imagine how full the woods would be if we all did that?

It's not practical large scale, or even on any scale really.

Will you still be requiring the services of the NHS at some point? The NHS you won't need paying for if you're not earning/paying taxes?

badpuma · 21/08/2021 09:00

The only way that would have any benefit on the environment is if it reduced population numbers.

Environmentally, it is best for people to live in flats in cities as that minimises travel and land take.

Mindyourbusiness22 · 21/08/2021 09:00

Why is this a YABU/YANBU?? It’s your choice, each to their own.
