to think I can stop a stomach bug in its tracks?

I'm a lone parent to a 2 year old. Toddler has a vomiting bug. Really quite unwell. Has been vomiting a lot for around 22 hours. I have that horrible feeling in my stomach where I feel nauseous and a bit out of sorts. I know I can't stop it completely but AIBU to think I can do something to help myself here? I don't think I can deal with both of us vomiting and being on my own. I'm exhausted.

Some probiotic yoghurt? Might be a bit late.
Vitamin c tablet

stupidasusual · 20/08/2021 20:09

It may be that your exhausted and worrying and that's making you feel like that, have you hit any fizzy in the house ? Let it go flat apparently it's good to drink after or so I've been told xx

SandysMam · 20/08/2021 20:11

A few cloves of raw garlic for the antibacterial properties if you can manage it!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 20/08/2021 20:11

I don’t think you can stop or prevent it, if it is coming. Instead, you need to be prepared. Lots of soft loo roll, rehydration sachets, bananas and ice pops in the freezer.

Get the iPad charged for dc to watch programmes when you are being ill and they are lying there feeling rough but need entertaining.

Make sure your hygiene is as good as possible and fingers crossed, you can get through this.

BeenHereForAges · 20/08/2021 20:12

Oh no op we've all been there! The quickest I've ever got over a vomiting bug is when I knew it was coming on like you so I just sat next to the toilet and threw up as soon as I started feeling that awful feeling. I've found that if i try to keep it down and convince myself I'm ok I'll end up with full on prolonged d&v which is so much worse than just the vomiting!
I hope you're ok, it's so tough when you have a little one to look after.

Mumofsend · 20/08/2021 20:13

Oh thats rough. I have two DC and a lone parent. One highlight was shoving a vomiting 2 year old into the bath tub so I could vom into the loo Envy

Whilst you still feel ok-ish find every blanket etc you can muster and layer up beds and sofas etc with towels too. Then if there is a vom spill you can just whip a layer off, shove in the bathtub and deal with when feeling better.

mathanxiety · 20/08/2021 20:14

Try some ginger tea.

54321nought · 20/08/2021 20:15

You don't want to stop the d and V, that is what expels the pathogen from your system

54321nought · 20/08/2021 20:15

I mean, you do want to stop it once it has started, but let if start first

Alternista · 20/08/2021 20:29

Oh god there’s nothing worse. I dont think you can stop it, so get prepared:

Get all your towels, sheets etc in a giant easy reach pile now. Consider making bed up with several layers so you can just whip one off each time. If you get really bad and can’t keep up with washing etc, but soiled sheets in bin liners outside back door for a day till you can catch up.

Buckets/bowls everywhere so you don’t have to clean up carpets etc.

Cleaning stuff easily to hand.

Make some jam sandwiches up now and put in foil in the fridge in case your toddler recovers before you do.

Get favourite toys, DVDs, etc ready to entertain them as much as you can.

Hang in there- it will be grim but it will pass.

Chipsahoy · 20/08/2021 20:46

You may not get it. Two of mine had it a week or so ago. I didn’t get it despite cleaning it up, driving the car right after.. Envy not envy.

TeenTitan007 · 20/08/2021 21:02

I have found not eating at all to be the best remedy. Lot of fluids but no food. You'll still throw up but it will be easier and over soon.

It's possible to not catch it from DC. I have never caught it despite DC having it several times. Lots of hand washing and bathroom cleaning helped.

Camomila · 20/08/2021 21:06

A vomiting bug went round nursery the other week - toddler DS2 got it, 5 year old DS1 got it. I stuck to boring bland foods (literally just toast, plain pasta and apples) for a few days and felt queasy but never threw up.

AnUnlikelyCombination · 20/08/2021 21:06

I stopped one at the nauseous stage with a large brandy - but I rarely vom, so it may have been partly my own body being good at fighting stomach bugs. I did feel a lot better after the brandy (warm, not with ice).

bigbaggyeyes · 20/08/2021 21:07

Full fat cone always seems to make me feel better if I've got a stomach bug

Namechange12312 · 20/08/2021 21:15

We had this recently, toddler ds had a vomiting bug so I was extra careful with cleanliness. Walked around with disinfectant spray everywhere we went, washed hands and clothes and bed sheets etc. We still all got it 2 days later when he was feeling better Sad. I agree with others just get everything prepared now while you’re ok - make some food up to throw at toddler as they should bounce back quite quickly. Films, iPad etc all ready and a sick bowl for you to carry round! Eat bland if you’re hungry, sips of water, get an early night! Good luck!

KittyKattyKate · 20/08/2021 21:19

Carr’s water biscuits. Half a pack seals you up.

godmum56 · 20/08/2021 21:32

I am a noro veteran as i used to work in the NHS in elderly care. It so varies....sometimes you take it badly sometimes not at all. So clean clean clean and prep prep prep. Don't try and stifle it, as has been said, sips of flat sugary drink, load up on telly stuff and snacks for your littlie and good luck.

godmum56 · 20/08/2021 21:33

PS lucozade now contains sweetener and is best avoided

MotionActivatedDog · 20/08/2021 21:35

I’d be prepping. Get a basin ready and give the loo a good scrub Wink

Greenmarmalade · 20/08/2021 21:36

I second the layer of towels on bed technique- saves changing the whole bed. I hope your toddler is better really soon. You could easily get a mild version- I really hope so. Sleep when your child goes to bed so you can get as much rest as possible. The house can be sorted out another day.

I sympathise- I’ve been in the same position and it’s completely exhausting.

JustLookingThanks · 20/08/2021 22:02

Enterosgel is excellent for diarrhoea if you get that, it absorbs the virus in your gut so it may help. It can be given to babies too. Hope you both start feeling better soon.
