to think I can stop a stomach bug in its tracks?

I'm a lone parent to a 2 year old. Toddler has a vomiting bug. Really quite unwell. Has been vomiting a lot for around 22 hours. I have that horrible feeling in my stomach where I feel nauseous and a bit out of sorts. I know I can't stop it completely but AIBU to think I can do something to help myself here? I don't think I can deal with both of us vomiting and being on my own. I'm exhausted.

@SandysMam

A few cloves of raw garlic for the antibacterial properties if you can manage it!
God no you don't want that coming back up!
Findahouse21 · 20/08/2021 23:30

If I'm up alone at night being ill, I find a familiar series or podcast quite confourting and stops me catastrophising. Friends and Sarah millican are my go to choices

Just recovering from a stomach bug. Nothing you can do to stop it, but best thing is to drink plenty of water / light squash to keep things moving. Once it's out it's out but if you don't keep hydrated it'll take longer

Sending good wishes and hope you better soon.
Keep a bucket to be sick in so you can stay.on loo if you get v&d at same time.

I’ve stopped vomiting bugs in their tracks. I’ve usually woken up feeling nauseous and then not eaten that day to avoid vomiting. This has been after dds have had a sick bug and passed it on. I’ve done this for the last 10 years, it’s seemed to have worked so far…

roadwarrior · 21/08/2021 00:04

Sucking on an ice cube really helps with the nausea.

Kaolin and morphine

A doctor in Chile told me that viruses causing stomach bugs need fat to flourish. So nothing with fat, butter, oil and egg yokes, also nothing raw. I was told tinned fruit, vegetables and chicken or fish cooked in water. All fat and skin off chicken.

CornishGem1975 · 21/08/2021 00:32

@IsThisAkissingBook My mum used to give me that as a kid - didn't know it was still a thing.

Just in the throws of a sickness bug with a toddler right now. I'm on my own so hoping it doesn't hit me. I'm doing the towel layering thing after changing the bed twice. We've given up on PJs. So much washing. Just hoping I avoid it Hmm

Streptoquin....not available in uk....stops all stomach issues and diarhea in minutes....but not suitable for children.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 21/08/2021 00:59

Make sure the path to the bathroom is clear.

Only way through is for your body to purge.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 21/08/2021 01:16

We've also just had a sickness bug in the house! DH had it horrendous, I've been fine and DS had been a little ill, I must have passed him some immunity. Thank god, I don't know how we'd have coped.

I second the not eating but also, would making yourself sick in advance help? Get it out before it takes hold?

PaulaTrilloe · 21/08/2021 01:28

Grated Apple has a high surface area to volume ratio good for absorbing nasties and some probiotic yogurt and spoon of honey

OttilieStonelady · 21/08/2021 03:56

Vomiting has started 😭😭😭

A tablespoon of vinegar for adults or a teaspoon for kids, sipped and washed down with a mouth full of water, works every time for me and the kids here that I can convince to take it. The vinegar kills the bacteria in the stomach, takes about 30 minutes to kick in. You may need a second spoonful later if your belly starts churning again. For some here it has brought on an instant vomit depending on age as a spoon full of vinegar is enough to make anyone puke so maybe try it on the adults first. It is also best before the first puke so when you are having that kick in the stomach feeling.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 21/08/2021 10:32

My God that sounds like torture!

Alternista · 21/08/2021 10:42

Ah OP I’m sorry. Hope you’re through it soon. Word of the day: SURVIVAL. Get the telly on and throw biscuits at the toddler.

Godzillaandgodzuki · 21/08/2021 10:53

Really hope it's over quickly, I've contracted two sickness and diarrhoea bugs from DS and both times it didn't last as long as it did for him and I was through the worst within about twelve hours Thanks

SeoultoSeoul · 21/08/2021 11:19

Hope you feel better soon OP.
If its a strain of norovirus then it's obviously highly contagious, best thing you can do to stop it in it's tracks is to avoid other people now.

Oh no are you coping?

Do you have any antihistamines in the house? Many have anti sickness properties (they’re even the main ingredient in kids travel sickness syrup).

Avoid food. Keep sipping cold water or ice lollies. It’s fine to vomit into a bowl/bucket while you’re looking after toddler (2 HG pregnancies here!) Do you have phenergan or metaclopramide or cetirizine or the gold standard ondansetron stashed away anywhere?

Re hydration salts will help.

Is it just vomiting or diarrhoea too? Because I’d be treating the latter if I couldn’t treat the former. Eg loperamide, or that pink stuff in a bottle, or co-codamol.

I think most of us have been there, vomiting whilst in sole charge of vomiting kids. I have! The worst was on a plane back from Egypt. So at least you’re at home!

Do call your GP if you’re struggling as they can usually prescribe anti sickness anti diarrhoea meds over the phone and the pharmacy can post them.

Feel for you!!
