to think I can stop a stomach bug in its tracks?

I'm a lone parent to a 2 year old. Toddler has a vomiting bug. Really quite unwell. Has been vomiting a lot for around 22 hours. I have that horrible feeling in my stomach where I feel nauseous and a bit out of sorts. I know I can't stop it completely but AIBU to think I can do something to help myself here? I don't think I can deal with both of us vomiting and being on my own. I'm exhausted.

Hope you're doing OK OP. There seems to be a nasty one going round. Sips of water when you can.

StrangeToSee · 21/08/2021 12:28

Norovirus is rampant in many parts of the U.K. this summer! The good news is it’s short lived (you should feel better within 24 hours).

I remember catching Norovirus from work, it hit so suddenly I was sick at the bus stop 😳😳🤦🏻‍♀️ Had to phone DH to pick me up and was sick in a bag all the way home. But by the next day I was fine, just tired.

Hang in there, this too will pass

fiorentina · 21/08/2021 12:30

I swear by charcoal tablets in this situation. Good luck!

Oh OP I’m so sorry.

Whybirdwhy · 21/08/2021 19:12

OP that is awful, there is nothing worse when you have a toddler to care for. You will get through this tho, it WILL pass. Tmw won't be as bad as today and hopefully the day after tmw, you will feel much much better, albeit wiped out. You are doing great.

HereticFanjo · 21/08/2021 19:13

Are you sure it's not covid?

CabbagesGreen · 21/08/2021 19:36

Don't want to alarm you but I know people who had D&V and it turned out to be covid.

CabbagesGreen · 21/08/2021 19:37

I mean could just be a normal horrendous tummy bug (there's lots around)

AnyOldPrion · 21/08/2021 20:15

If your temperature is that high, you need to call 111 for advice.

Hope you can get some help soon.

MilkTrayheaven · 21/08/2021 20:47

OP, I’ve had norovirus a few times in my life and my god, do I get it bad. Exactly like you, fever, body aches, can’t even keep water down etc, it’s horrendous.

I got rid of it as quick as possible last time by not eating or drinking anything, as in, because I couldn’t even keep water down I just didn’t. I felt SO dehydrated but I knew if I did it, the bug would be starved/ dead the following day. If you have to drink, literally just enough to wet your mouth, that’s it, do that every few hours, just the smallest of sips. It does work and I promise you you won’t be throwing up anymore.

I really, really feel for you as it’s fucking awful and you literally feel like you’re dying.

This isn’t aimed at the OP or anyone in particularly, but it seem like there’s lots of it going round but how on earth are people catching it?! Schools/ nurseries aren’t open in England and most people are still distancing/ washing/ anti bacing hands etc and it’s ‘summer’ I thought sickness bugs were more dormant then too?!

Letsbekindplease · 21/08/2021 20:56

I worked in a care home that was rife, and I mean RIFE with the Nora virus. 27 out of the 28 rooms had the virus, so of course a day later I was out at the shops and had the feeling of needing to go to the toilet. That evening I was also being sick. Sick like I’ve never been sick before. A bit like the film STAND BY ME. ( you know the scene ).
My partner went out and bought me some yakult and grapes. I drank the whole packet of yakult and snacked on grapes. The next day I felt fine. I swear by this every time.
Hope you don’t have it too bad and your little one is on the mend soon. Plenty fluids x

justustwoandmoo · 21/08/2021 21:08

I've had a few really nasty stomach bugs before. Not nice and a nightmare when you have no support. I find there is nothing to do but wait it out tbh. I hope you are ok xx

LowlytheWorm · 22/08/2021 05:38

Up myself now 🤢 stupid colleague came back to work from a stomach bug on Friday. If it’s taken this long to take effect it’s probably just a bug rather than noro isn’t it? Started with cramps high up and weird gurgling stomach yesterday… I’m sure noro came in a lot faster?
Urgh I hate stomach bugs so much 😔

LowlytheWorm · 22/08/2021 05:39

@OttilieStonelady i Really hope you’re feeling better. Flowers

OiPanda · 22/08/2021 08:14

No disrespect meant but please no-one actively try dehydrating themselves - I had very bad gastro and accidentally did what you're suggesting because I couldn't face anything more than a sip of water. In less than 24 hours I got so dehydrated I needed an ambulance, they got someone to come and meet them on the side of the road on the 30 min trip to the hospital to put a canula/drip in (in the back of the ambulance, not on the verge 😁) because they were so concerned, I spent 4 days in hospital on a drip which was unpleasant pre-covid but definitely not where you want to be right now.
StrangeToSee · 22/08/2021 09:46

Are you ok OP?

Hope the worst has passed now.

It's pretty rife at the moment, partly because of the Winter lockdown which meant bugs couldn't circulate as easily then.

My 5-year-old DD (very very prone to stomach bugs) actually caught something TWICE in the last couple of months before schools broke up. Though touch wood they were both over and done with within a few hours and none of the rest of us caught it.

In terms of now, non-school based nurseries are still open and there was a big outbreak at my DS' last week - multiple cases, including staff, in each room. I (and according to the manager, others did too!) actually kept DS off as I just didn't want to risk bringing another one into the house.

Norovirus is soooo infectious.

Sorry you're suffering Sad

I have a huge phobia of sickness bugs so you have my sympathy.

It could still be norovirus (stomach bugs are usually either viral - of which norovirus is the most common in adults, or bacterial, eg food poisoning). The incubation period can be anywhere between 12 and 48 hours, though apparently 33 hours is the average so you're probably near to that.

Norovirus is not necessarily quick to transmit, but more to take hold, so you'll be ill soon after feeling it if you see what I mean. And very rapid expelling...

Hope you're feeling a lot better now.
