To have ordered the same Chinese takeaway dishes for a decade?

ComputerIsLoading · 20/08/2021 18:41

We have a Chinese on average 5 times a year and every single times, for around a decade I have promised myself I will order something different..

Inevitably we end up ordering chicken or king prawn chow mien, chicken curry and rice sweet and sour chicken and mini spring rolls. On the odd occasions we have gone wild and had special fried rice and pancake rolls..

Tonight is the night to walk on the wild side.. please let me know your recommendations! I’ve looked at crispy beef but do I need to order rice with that? At 30 I’m still a Chinese takeaway novice!

I'm the exact same OP - ordered the same because I daren't try something new and it ruin the meal...

I'm watching this thread with interest. May try crispy beef.

Can I ask - when you order pancakes, do you just get pancakes like flat pancakes? Do they not have a filling?

The pancakes come with crispy duck.

I used to be really bad for this. My OH is fab and loves ordering new food so he will sometimes order stuff he thinks I’ll like so I can try it while still getting my usual 🙈

On occasion I have ordered new stuff myself I have still ordered a “safe” comfort dish I know I like as be gutted to order food and want to eat none of it

InFiveMins · 20/08/2021 19:15

@Spanglybangles

Chicken with ginger and spring onion Honey chilli chicken Chicken with broccoli Salt and chilli pepper chips Egg fried rice Sometimes soft noodles Prawn crackers Fried rice chips and curry sauce

Those are my go to items always.

When you order something like chicken with ginger and spring onion, do you just get a chicken breast cooked in ginger with spring onion on top? Same for honey chilli chicken - is it a chicken breast smothered in honey and chilli?

I struggle with takeaways because I can't vision what it is that will arrive and that puts me off from trying something new.

A Chinese is not a Chinese without crispy duck pancakes and all the trimmings. In fact this was my favourite meal for many years. I tend to prefer Indian nowadays but still like a Chinese occasionally

InFiveMins · 20/08/2021 19:15

@userxx I will give them a try next time I order.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/08/2021 19:16

The menu should say whether rice is included. Round here you get boiled rice or chips for free and fried rice is about 80 p more.

You've got quite a variety there anyway but you could always be brave and swap out one of your old favourites for everyone to try?

poshme · 20/08/2021 19:16

We always have crispy chilli beef, chicken satay on skewers, seaweed, Singapore noodles and menu B. (Duck pancakes, special fried rice, chicken in yellow bean sauce, prawn Szechuan style, spare ribs, broccoli)

We sometimes try to have something different.
And then come back to the above.

Now the kids are starting to like chinese they want to vary it...

QueenofLouisiana · 20/08/2021 19:16

I’m having tofu in black bean sauce and mushroom fried rice tonight. Side order of seaweed and sharing veg chow mein. DH is having special good yung and he and DS share crispy aromatic pork.

poshme · 20/08/2021 19:16

I have just eaten a full meal and now I want Chinese food.

Indoctro · 20/08/2021 19:17

Foo yung

It's all I ever order but it's delicious

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 20/08/2021 19:17

Singapore Vermicelli!

userxx · 20/08/2021 19:18

Not had Chinese food for months and months, not even thought about it but now I'm craving one!!

Crispy duck (either on the bone or shredded) comes with chopped cucumber & spring onions, a little pot of plum sauce and little wafer thin pancakes. You add the veg, duck & sauce, roll up and stuff in your mouth eat daintily.
poshme · 20/08/2021 19:20

I have now learned to make crispy chilli beef and it's obvs not as good, but still totally yummy.

DoctorSnortles · 20/08/2021 19:20

I want king prawns with green pepper and black bean sauce, now. And one of those enormous spring rolls, not the diddly little ones.

EyeOfRa · 20/08/2021 19:20

Vegetable spring rolls
Chickens in satay sauce (not on skewers)
Kung po chicken

I have also not deviated for about 2 decades Grin

Ostryga · 20/08/2021 19:20

I always order the same: beef with broccoli, prawns with Chinese mushroom and bamboo, prawn balls and chop suey.

We’ve recently had an ‘authentic’ Chinese place open and MY WORD. The food is worlds apart, I’m in takeout heaven!

The last order was 3 types of dumplings, crispy fried intestines (sounds awful, tasted amazing) proper mapo tofu, kings prawns in a salted egg yolk sauce, noodles in a savoury broth with black fungus mushrooms, tripes and beef tendon.

NatriumChloride · 20/08/2021 19:22

@piefacedClique

Chicken green pepper and black bean sauce 🤤🤤🤤
Exactly this!!
adriennewillfly · 20/08/2021 19:22

Squid in chilli and black bean. It's amazing if done right (I.e. If they can do it without making the squid rubbery) if they can't do it right then king prawns in chilli and black bean. Especially good if they batter the squid/prawns first.

AvantGardening · 20/08/2021 19:23

Singapore noodles would be a relatively safe option as it’s similar to chow mein (but so much better).

Husband likes crispy beef but I find it too sweet. Having said that if you like sweet and sour chicken you should be fine. You might also like the Hong Kong style sweet and sour - similar enough to not be scary but a change of pace.

Jubaju · 20/08/2021 19:23

Salt and chilli squid! Now I’m hungry 😭

earthyfire · 20/08/2021 19:29

We have some of these on rotation

Chicken singapore style noodles
Chicken Chow Mein
Chicken Curry - don't like but my husband does
Sweet and Sour Chicken or balls
Crispy duck
Mushrooms, garlic and onions
Sliced beef with chilli
Boiled rice
Crab sweetcorn soup or wonton soup

piefacedClique · 20/08/2021 19:31

So gutted I’m half way through a recipe from This morning for tonight’s dinner! Chinese tomorrow 🤤

SeoultoSeoul · 20/08/2021 19:33

If you add nothing else, at least try the Salt and pepper chips.Wink
