I am not sure what, but I have seen their previous demonstrations, and support their cause.

We were given badges at one event, and travelled home on public transport wearing them, and received absolutely nothing but 100% support from other travellers, which was nice, as I expected some hostility, publicly wearing their badges while roads in London were closed by them

Outsource the pollution to China then outsource the blame as well?

No wonder we are in such deep trouble.

DoubleShotEspresso · 23/08/2021 11:48

God I've got two central London appointments this week with DC (SEND/medical). Last time these nut jobs did this we list our appointment I really hope they are stopped by the police this time.

Hekatestorch · 23/08/2021 11:59

The science does not support depriving people of their wages, or depriving people of their medical appointments.

Darker · 23/08/2021 12:03

Don’t worry. Climate change won’t affect the deserving poor. Oh wait…

mustlovegin · 23/08/2021 12:23

I hope everyone who breaks the law during these despicable protests is arrested, tried, charged and given an appropriate sentence.

Most people are really fed up with this

lannistunut · 23/08/2021 12:26

@Andante57

I personally only have any real knowledge of XR in the UK, so I must defer on that

Iannistunut so why say my argument is ‘nonsense’ when you agree you know nothing about XR’s ‘global’ influence?
Actually, I have asked for evidence for its activities in China and I think I’m going to be waiting a very long time for an answer…….

I think it is nonsense to criticise UK people for anything to do with China, UK people are protesting in the UK.

What Chinese people do in China is another matter, for them not for me.

Just saw this part of a tweet from the person linked above '...If you accept the climate and ecological crisis is as bad as scientists say then it was inevitable part of society would respond with direct action.' and I think that sums up what I think - is climate change an emergency or not?

If it is an emergency, then their actions are understandable. They genuinely believe it is an emergency, therefore they are trying to get as much attention as possible.

This is the point Thunberg makes, the politicians are saying the climate is a priority but they are acting as though it is not.

All this 'yes it is an emergency but they really should just have a petition and not be noisy' leaves me a bit Confused.

Darker · 23/08/2021 12:32

That’s ridiculous. Business is global. UK trade arrangements and legislation underpins trade with China. We import loads of things from there, including cheap plastic tat. All the crap that fuels climate change.

I think that’s the point of the direct action. Similarly to how the suffragettes engaged in illegal behaviour when no one listened. They are putting themselves in a position where they could be arrested, at great personal sacrifice, for the reasons I have stated above. This is, historically, sometimes the only way to effect change. We have known about this since the 1980s at least. People are already dying. What else can we do?

Not sure if that was directed at myself @Darker

What I thought was ridiculous earlier was critcising UK protestors for not protesting in China. I am happy for people to protest against global trade etc. but surely here in the UK we should be protesting against the UK aspect of that trade - we are not in a position to criticise other countries until we get our own house in order.

Lostmarbles2021 · 23/08/2021 12:39

lannistunut

Me too. Thanks for the link. It is an emergency from everything I understand. I’m no expert but know experts. The science is as robust as any science can be. With the exception of an omnipotent god telling us otherwise, there is no greater certainty we can achieve.

Darker · 23/08/2021 12:50

lannistunut sorry I was responding to previous poster.

They are so 'brave' that they'd only dare to disrupt those who tolerate their awful behaviour. They would never go near China, as they have a backbone over there and they would be locked up in no time. I hope an end is put to this madness soon.

mustlovegin · 23/08/2021 12:52

The general public does not support XR. Most people do not want to have their access to food curtailed and do not want air travel to be restricted, to begin with.

They might not get a choice tbh, at some point the costs of ignoring the climate issue will tip the balance.
Onetraumaatatimeplease · 23/08/2021 12:58

Did anything change the last time they blocked London up? I mean did it lead to any policy changes or anything? The media reported on the mess they made, the fact that the police have better things to do, the damage they did, Emma Thompson's flight etc but I didn't see anything about how it helped the cause.

mustlovegin · 23/08/2021 13:04

How about contraception, to start with?

No one has said it's about being noisy. It's about targeting public transport etc and not caring about situations like this.

Then there's just the side issue that they have no idea how to achieve their aims and their followers don't seem to realise what 'immediate action' would entail in terms of their own responsibility.

I can't find any concrete gains from the last protests.

If you look at Greenpeace site there's a sum up of their achievements. Xr don't appear to have very much in comparison.

And gp targeted the people causing the problems: ie whaling/fishing boats. I can't find much evidence of them deliberately causing regular people problems.

Greenpeace and ER work in partnership, they both have different scopes, they compliment each other, they are not in any sort of opposition to each other
OP posts:
Darker · 23/08/2021 13:30

Greenpeace is a very established organisation. XR started in 2018. Everyone seems to know who XR are, which is pretty impressive amongst the noise of Covid, Brexit etc.

mustlovegin · 23/08/2021 13:30

You know the government are not doing anything like enough, they are leading us to disaster

Which government? The government of 66million people? What about the governments of billions of people in Asia, for instance?

mustlovegin · 23/08/2021 13:32

And if posters continue to hail the heavily entouraged and airmiled Greta, as if she were some kind of saint, I'm going to self-combust!

What about them?

AS has been pointed out multiple times, a lot of the pollution in Asia is our pollution, which we outsource

And ER is active all over the world

And the UK is particularly awful in terms of damage to the environment, and particularly good at covering it up and pretending everything is rosy
