to support extinction rebellion - more London action tomorrow

I am not sure what, but I have seen their previous demonstrations, and support their cause.

We were given badges at one event, and travelled home on public transport wearing them, and received absolutely nothing but 100% support from other travellers, which was nice, as I expected some hostility, publicly wearing their badges while roads in London were closed by them

Because I'm sick of people lecturing me, particularly when they do the opposite. Her crew on the famous yacht flew to the USA for goodness’ sake! How did that help?
And those young people are the same ones who buy new technology every 5 minutes, they wouldn't be seen dead with the phone I have!

Felicity666 · 20/08/2021 15:16

Totally agree. These selfish buggers have nothing better to do!

EatYourVegetables · 20/08/2021 15:18

For anyone saying they cause inconvenience, doing nothing will make going across London very inconvenient in a few years:

Greta is known for making life choices that reduce her footprint. Remember her travelling by train and boat to get around the world?

The 'zero carbon' yacht trip to New York was a pure publicity stunt. Crewmen had to fly out to New York to take the yacht back to Europe and allegedly the crew who accompanied her on the trip also flew back to Europe afterwards. Four trans Atlantic flights to save her making one.

For what it is worth I respect the message she carries, I just don't like the weird cult that has developed around her.

Darker · 20/08/2021 15:26

The problem is that there will always be another nit to pick to have a go at people campaigning in this area. No one has ever done enough to please the critics.

LoislovesStewie · 20/08/2021 15:27

No, they should practice what they preach;that is it, really.

Darker · 20/08/2021 15:28

She does.

SailYourShips · 20/08/2021 15:28

If only the dinosaurs had thought of organising themselves into something like Extinction Rebellion.

They would still be here, forests would cover Great Britain and we-if we had appeared at all- would still be able to walk to Europe.

Still, they wouldn't be told and still kept on driving around and using plastic bags. Serves them right really.

LoislovesStewie · 20/08/2021 15:28

Darker she doesn't.

ReggaetonLente · 20/08/2021 15:30

But it's easier to claim that you can't make a difference and so you'll just sit back and consume while shaking your sanctimonious head at government.

I do lots, cheers HeyDemonsItsYaGirl! Vegan family, reuseable everything (nappies when we needed them, wipes, cups, straws), secondhand everything, we changed all our pension investment funds so as not to include fossil fuels etc. Even things like deleting all old emails as they have a carbon footprint.

My sanctimonious little head still thinks that while our government investing more into the development of new oil fields, all of that is a drop in the ocean.

HOkieCOkie · 20/08/2021 15:34

Absolute arseholes the lot of them! And you didn’t get support on the train, it’s more Londoners just don’t really care enough to talk to you!

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 20/08/2021 15:49

My sanctimonious little head still thinks that while our government investing more into the development of new oil fields, all of that is a drop in the ocean.

And if people "lived like monks" they'd carry on producing massive amounts of oil, would they?

You missed the point spectacularly.

EstuaryBird · 20/08/2021 15:57

If you want to cause an ‘inconvenience’ why don’t you target people driving into London from the more affluent suburbs of West London instead of people using public transport from some of the poorest in East London?

Not OK for my husband to get on the DLR but you celebrate Emma bloody Thompson for flying First Class across the Atlantic and back?

How do you all get to your ‘inconvenient’ protests? Because unless you walk then you’re hypocrites for stopping others from using public transport.

While you’re all polluting central London I’ll be out clearing footpaths with the Ramblers, picking plastic out of the Estuary and clearing up those bags of dog shit you hang on the bloody trees.

Sick to the teeth of the virtue signalling lot of you. Go and shove some battery farmed KFC chickens down your self righteous throats……and take your bloody litter home with you.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl

Sorry, how long do you think we've got to change this situation?

The fact is we live in a capitalist society where almost everything hinges on more, more, more. I'm privileged enough to have opted out of that - to a point - but it'll never be enough. We all have to pay rent, mortgages, taxes. Use schools and hospitals. Travel around in some capacity, for various reasons. Raise our children. No matter what individual actions and choices we take and make, living and working in a society led by people who actively profit from the destruction of our environment means that it's pretty much impossible to turn things around. We need a government that understands the danger we are in, is committed to avoiding further damage and will protect those whose lives and livelihoods will be lost to climate disaster.

You think it's ok for them to build new oil fields NOW, with all the risk and destruction that just goes into drilling, let alone burning the oil once it's out of the ground - and it's just our responsibility to... Not use oil?

BelleOfTheProvince · 20/08/2021 16:05

And which political party is offering those things?
An opt out of capitalism will take more than a four year 'turn'. What you are talking about is revolution.
And revolutions need ideas and structures not just ideals.

LeSquigh · 20/08/2021 16:09

YABU. They should be treated as a terrorist organisation. I say this as both a member of the public and an emergency services worker. The disruption they cause, the abuse they give and the methods they use are all indicative of troublemakers. They do not care about the planet, they care about causing trouble.

ReggaetonLente · 20/08/2021 16:10

I agree with that. I have never said XR are perfect or that I agree with all they do - I just disagree with the idea that if we all just 'do our bit' it'll all be ok. And that if it isn't ok it's because we didn't do enough as individuals.

BelleOfTheProvince · 20/08/2021 16:14

I don't think anyone implied 'doing our bit' was enough. I certainly didn't mean to.
I agree action needs to be taken. Proper investment and schemes.

I just take issue with people who do very little personally lecturing others about the environment. I don't believe you can eat meat everyday for example and spout you are an environmental warrior because you stopped some people going to work on a sunny weekend.

People don't like hypocrisy.

PlanDeRaccordement · 20/08/2021 16:27

The fact is we live in a capitalist society where almost everything hinges on more, more, more.

Er, that’s not capitalism nor a feature of capitalism. It’s consumerism and that’s completely independent of who owns the means of production.

ReggaetonLente · 20/08/2021 16:29

No someone called me sanctimonious and said all I want to do is sit back and consume (or something) because I said I don't think it's fair to criticise XR protestors for putting on their central heating on in the winter, when 100 companies produce 71% of all emissions.

Yes, I get what you are saying. But lots of layers to things. One of the most vocal climate change protestors I know formula fed all her children and used disposable nappies, obviously those are not the most environmentally friendly 'choices' to make, but what's to say they were choices for her? I don't know what was behind that and I don't think it cancels out all the other amazing stuff she does for the environment.

It's easy to pick at people because really whatever any of us do will never be enough especially in the West. Obviously eating meat every day is atrocious and no one should be doing that, let alone then lecturing others on the environment, but I don't think it should be a requirement to live a perfect or near perfect eco lifestyle before we can call out shitty government behaviour and poor leadership, and ask for them to show us a better way.

ReggaetonLente · 20/08/2021 16:31

We live in a capitalist society that is also consumerist, yes.

BelleOfTheProvince · 20/08/2021 16:36

I get the bottle feeding thing because my baby couldn't bf. But that's a million miles away from someone who bullies others using the environment as a shield and then gets lunch at KFC.
I'm sure there are lots of well meaning people in the er. But like all extremist groups, the dangerous and unworthy are now at the helm.

The fairest thing to say would be there are lots of people who really care in we, who are outnumbered by opportunists in it for various reasons.

Andante57 · 20/08/2021 16:39

haha! yes, I will feed back! but not about KFC, as chicken is a good choice for the environment, far more so than lamb, beef or fish

Op - Battery farmed chickens is a vile and cruel form of farming and I presume KFC doesn’t use exclusively free range chicken?
Happy to be corrected.

ReggaetonLente · 20/08/2021 16:44

Yes I think that is fair 😊

I read a quote once that said something like ideology is almost always dangerous because its very existence depends on forcing it on others. I think that's where things go a bit awry for XR - it's very much entrenched in ideology and not even particularly flexible or able to respond quickly as an organisation to particular issues or political developments, because its members, supporters and local groups are too diffuse. In my experience.
