to support extinction rebellion - more London action tomorrow

I am not sure what, but I have seen their previous demonstrations, and support their cause.

We were given badges at one event, and travelled home on public transport wearing them, and received absolutely nothing but 100% support from other travellers, which was nice, as I expected some hostility, publicly wearing their badges while roads in London were closed by them

I hope the result of this thread would be op telling fellow protesters that they should pick up their rubbish, not use in environmental props like glitter and glue and not go to KFC for lunch because it damages their image.
Oh to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.

Rhannion · 20/08/2021 11:13

@OhWhyNot

Is Emma Thompson flying in again (first class of course) let’s hope so

How could I support them when peoples lives who earn an hourly wage were so disrupted last time and they just didn’t care

She’s a hypocrite, can’t stand her.

And yet ambulances not getting through, people not getting to work, all the litter left seems to be collateral damage or as the OP put it 'wasn't me' (paraphrased).

All for the greater good.

Disruption means, well, some disruption.

Ambulances not getting through.... my understanding is that ambulances are let through.

The litter... I've already said what I've seen, which is that most XR people are very responsible. I've see terrible littering on other protests, and on normal days of the week to be frank.

I don't speak for XR. My involvement is very peripheral. But I try to base my responses on what I have seen.

haha! yes, I will feed back! but not about KFC, as chicken is a good choice for the environment, far more so than lamb, beef or fish

@FourTeaFallOut

You need to have political capital to turn the hand of the government and xr has very little. They are an irritant.

Here you are on MN - and I would say an environment that is aware of climate change and fairly amenable to the changes that need to be made to mitigate the climate emergency but very few have time for XR. It's the wrong tactic and you do more damage than good.

Nope. They have a lot more political capital and influence than the powers that be would like to admit. Their strategy is clever and based on evidence of what has shifted major issues in the past.

230 councils, following XR demands, declared a climate emergency. At the one near me there’s now a lot of work happening to convert the public and expert consultation data into practical climate action at a scale that will make a real difference. I think that’s a result.

And don’t you think their London protests and the inability of the police to crack down on them was one of the drivers for the government to try to curb non violent protest? Because they know it works.

EstuaryBird · 20/08/2021 11:15

@54321nought

Please explain to me how preventing my husband from getting to his Zero Hours contract job (Security) job helped to save the planet.

Because he was late on the day those two idiots decided to glue themselves to an essential piece of public transport he was sent home and removed from the roster for that job losing us £480.

If us not being able to pay our bills that month helped the planet then maybe it was worth it but I’ve asked several XR protesters for an explanation but have never received one.

I totally support your goals but targeting people who are already struggling will win you no supporters. I went from supporting you to despising you in one minute.

Still, at least good old Emma had a nice trip on an airplane, eh 👍…..bunch of fucking hypocrites.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 20/08/2021 11:15

@PicsInRed

Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.

Ominous.

I agree. It's a hard no from me.

We're fucked. I don't think XR's antics are helping.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/08/2021 11:18

No, I don't think so. I think you need to take the public with you and until you do you are building a political campaign on sand.

Not at all ominous.

Theluggage15 · 20/08/2021 11:19

Most of them don’t give a shit about the environment, the protests are just something to do. Loads of Starbucks and MacDonalds being had at their protests, loads of litter left and yes the ‘but it’s not us’
when something backfires is pathetic.

The Canning Town thing was funny, ordinary people who just want to get on with their day are totally turned off by this crap. Pretend you’re doing something meaningful if you like but you’re not.

No, the driver to curb non violent protests was not because the ER stuff worked but because they pissed so many people off. Hardly a good result.

What if the Citizens Assembly decide they don't give a fuck about climate change? Grin

Eating meat for every year is not good for the environment full stop op. I would expect people who advocate stopping climate change to at the very least be significantly reducing their meat intake(like many on Mumsnet already do) so they could go one day without resorting to KFC. Have you seen the video with Earthling Ed talking to climate change protesters? It's this kind of hypocrisy people don't like.
If you are going to cause mass disruption to normal people's lives at least have the grace to strive to be better than them. So, sorry if you are making no effort to manage your meat consumption I don't buy it.

ufucoffee · 20/08/2021 11:22

They are a bunch of wankers who piss people off and therefore do more harm than good for the cause the are supporting. They are a laughing stock.

Clavinova · 20/08/2021 11:23

Catflapkitkat

The spokeswoman in your video clip has left the group!

BBC September 2020
A former Extinction Rebellion (XR) spokeswoman left the environmental group to campaign for nuclear power because she says it is the only way to deal with the climate crisis.

Zion Lights, writing in the Daily Mail, also said that she had become unable to defend some of the group's claims.

XR "peddle messages of doomsday gloom that alienate" and offer "little in the way of positive solutions", she added.

BelleOfTheProvince · 20/08/2021 11:26

I had a boss (much hated) who used to say 'don't bring me problems, bring me solutions'.
However, it does seem quite applicable to xr.

This is awful, EstuaryBird. But surely lateness can happen for lots of reasons and the disruption caused by the protests were well documented, so it should have been easy to prove that the lateness was not his fault. Surely at least some of the blame sits with his employer for draconian employment practices and removing him from the roster?

Last time I bought a load of glitter and flushed it down the sink, also some plastic cutlery that I broke into small pieces and dispersed along the beach.
Your imagination is wonderful! Could you show us some of your crayon drawings after snack time?

LoislovesStewie · 20/08/2021 11:34

I bought a washing machine recently, British brand, guess where it's made? Turkey!! how the hell can I buy something made in the UK if the brand has moved is operation to Turkey? Sorry, but us mere mortals can't help some things. (That was in response to buying items from China, the point is NOTHING is made in the UK any more).

Don't you believe her? Saying that her husband's employer is a meanie won't get them that income back. XR caused that loss NOT the employer.

It's a USA slant but the general message is still the same.
Stay home and try some plant based recipes op. The environment will be better for it.
