That this does not constitute stealing?

We recently enjoyed a self catering holiday. On the way we decided to break up the journey by stopping for breakfast at a well known chain pub/restaurant/hotel.
The menu was very complicated with only certain things being available to hotel guests rather than others.
My partner and I ordered a cooked breakfast, the DC just wanted something simple so I ordered them a bacon sandwich. I enquired about the small boxes of cereal on display as that was what the DC really wanted. I was told it was part of the hotel guests only breakfast and if DC wanted it it would br £6 each (£12). I ordered that too. My bill was over £30!
The hotel guests additional breakfast was basically the small boxes of cereals plus bread/crumpets to toast. The DC ate a box of cereal and one crumpet each.
Feeling aggrieved that I had spent over £30 on breakfast, and mindful that we were going on a self catering break, I decided to get my monies worth by taking with us a few additional individual portions of jam and Nutella (about 10-12) total. My partner accused me of stealing! WIBU?

You can justify stealing, but arguing that it's fair doesn't mean it's not still stealing. For example, a person stealing to feed their starving children is understandable but still it's stealing.

Ah I love a hotel breakfast but there are some cheeky feckers like OP about

Premier do 2 kids each adult free under 16. A mother turned up with her twin kids they looked over 16 to me but weren’t challenged, they were about 5’8. First thing they did was walk behind the bar for pint pots to fill up with orange juice. No shame

Hotels work on people over and under eating but surely not on people taking the piss

But she didn’t take the piss.

Only jam and Nutella Grin

@Sweetpeasaremadeforbees

Some people have no shame. Personally I'd find that quite entertaining

It was DH who noticed it, he thought it was hilarious, I was fuming and ranted about giving them a fiver if they couldn't afford to buy a couple of coffees during the day.

It was a bit odd, the man wore a rucksack to carry his flasks in, later DH saw the wife at the reception moaning about the towels (perhaps they'd nicked them and were claiming that their room hadn't contained towels Grin)

Grin Grin

😂😂 brilliant. Piss taking was free from the continental breakfast just not the 12 pots of Nutella and jam

Saw this meme earlier, reminded me of this thread. 🤣

Stealing - yes. Unreasonable - no

DreamTheMoors · 20/08/2021 22:14

If it bothers you enough to post on the internet to random strangers, you could always return them and say they “accidentally fell” into your handbag.

Or, you could always go with the old standby that you merely “borrowed them.”

I get that you’re angry about the cost, but you agreed to it when you ordered the items in the first place - correct?

Iwtwab12bow · 20/08/2021 22:29

Actually if you've paid for the breakIfast, l really don't think that's theft.I always take the shower gel / shampoo/ shower cap that l don't use. Provided for you all in the bill so yes,take home

picl · 20/08/2021 22:47

technically it is not stealing... If they are offered as complimentary extras for the breakfast you've already paid for

Yourcatisnotsorry · 20/08/2021 23:07

Yes it’s stealing. I always do it 😂

Rachie1973 · 20/08/2021 23:45

I tend to have my breakfast and leave with my banana in my hand because my eyes are bigger than my belly. No one seems to care. I don’t hide it.

Handfuls though, of stuff does seem a tad excessive.

pollymere · 20/08/2021 23:50

Most of these places offer kids eat free for breakfast so I'm surprised. I'm also impressed you were honest enough to buy two breakfasts rather than one and then just share it between your kids. I think a few jams or nutellas is expected as part of the cost to be fair. I've seen people take whole baguettes...

You absolute rebel.

@LadyCatStark

Nah it’s just getting your money’s worth!
Totally agree - they were charging too much anyway. I don't have sugar in drinks but I always take sachets, useful in the kitchen
Mamanyt · 21/08/2021 00:36

It is stealing. I will say that stealing of that sort is factored into food costs, which is just one of the many reasons that your box of cereal was so expensive, but it is, nonetheless, stealing. I wouldn't lose much sleep over it, and you are one of hundreds of thousands who steal like this, but don't kid yourself, either. Either you are or are not comfortable with this level of theft. If you are, have at it. If you are not, 'go, and sin no more."

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 21/08/2021 01:36

@Petlover9

Well, if they were charging too much one could simply choose not to buy it. It's madness that people use this sort of "logic" to justify being a grabby thief.

Ineke · 21/08/2021 01:59

Petty theft, you paid for breakfast on that morning, not for rations for another breakfast on another morning.

I don't think you could be trusted around the Sugar/Salt/pepper sachets or straws for that matter.
