I don’t have an Aldi near me, not been in one, but I’ve heard they’re pretty good? Is it worth risking my life to shop there?

I just shove all my stuff into the trolley then take it out to the car and pack it into bags in the boot. I used to have a system for packing into bags in the trolley and keeping up, but it’s just too stressful with DS in tow for the summer holidays and anyway, I started doing click and collect during lockdown 1 and have only just returned to Aldi. The time off has weakened me Grin

OH finds packing at Lidl very stressful, why do they have such a tiny area to put the items that have been scanned on?? Two items and it's full. Fortunately we've never had a cashier on a power trip but trying to keep up is crazy. I've never heard of not bagging at the checkout, they can fuck off if they think I'm dumping it all back in the trolley to have to bag up again after.

That’s the system I use too. I can easily keep up with Aldi’s fastest!

YABU to promote anything by that toxic rag.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/08/2021 16:07

I’d say definitely not. She didn’t snap and fart as she bent down.

Barnabyted · 18/08/2021 16:10

When I lived in Germany as a child, it was the normal thing to put the things in the trolley and then pack at the shelves. This was the case in both Lidl and Aldi and none of the shoppers had an issue with this as it sped up the waiting times for everyone in the queue. I just wish this was enforced in my local Lidl as the queues are often 10 deep with only two cashiers working.
For someone to be "traumatised" by a fast cashier, they really do need to get a grip on reality or actually use their common sense and just put it in the trolley to pack either in the shop or in the car.

This woman really needs to get a grip. Poor kids being raised by such a wet lettuce.

Ellie56 · 18/08/2021 16:13

But really- "crying and shaking"? Hmm Confused

Bearing in mind we had posters on here who were literally shaking and in tears because people were buying Easter Eggs or even just chocolate when they did their shopping during the first lockdown, these selfish shoppers were literally killing people. Heaven forfend anyone went to feed livestock or horses people doing that and not just leaving the animals to starve to death were akin to the worst serial killers and prompted full blown weeping and wailing from some posters on here. In view of that I can definitely believe the woman in the article is an MNer.

aerosocks · 18/08/2021 16:21

Terrible journalism. Very sloppy. ...diffuse the situation... Grin

Congressdingo · 18/08/2021 16:21

@Acrasia

She should definitely never shop in Germany, UK Aldi are the same speed as normal supermarkets, and then German Aldi and Lidl cashiers cause a sonic boom from the speed at which they scan items 😆 It’s so stressful that I only ever buy what I can carry in my hands from Aldi and Lidl. It’s actually not too bad here in general because most people pack straight into their own baskets (like this www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B06X97QTFJ/) rather than bags.
These baskets are lovely. I now crave one, but I dont want to be a trend setter, can yous all start using them so I can then jump on the bandwagon?
VickyEadieofThigh · 18/08/2021 16:22

@SoreusBacchus

Where I live we pack in the trolley, like anywhere else. Aldi checkout operators are fairly laid back. We're not people that go in for those sorts of corporate shenanigans!
I find it easy at Aldi (and Lidl) to have the bags open and throw things into them just as I would if it were only the trolley. I sometimes have to re-arrange a bit afterwards but mostly not.
MrsAukerman · 18/08/2021 16:25

Pretty sure it's already been on APILN!

TheGenealogist · 18/08/2021 16:26

She revealed to Teesside Live that the man’s "ferocious" speed on the conveyor belts left her traumatised.

Traumatised. TRAUMATISED.

Nicola Fuller if you're reading, you need a fucking massive grip.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/08/2021 16:26

Aldi home country here - speed pack you stuff in the right order on to the band, put it back in the trolley in the right order and bag it in in the packing area. No buised fruit. Grin

Lockheart · 18/08/2021 16:27

I've had some serious upsets in my life but I don't think I've ever been "crying and shaking" at anything. I've cried, yes, I've never been hysterical.

Some posters on MN frequently get upset by made up threads on the internet, however, so it doesn't surprise me. Some of them apparently can't even sleep for worrying about some random on the internet.

Voicefancier · 18/08/2021 16:28

@CagneyNYPD

JudgeJ · 18/08/2021 16:28

@CovidCorvid

I don’t think a Mumsnetter would embarrass herself by running to the press talking about being traumatised by such an event. She needs to Get a grip.

What I don’t understand is if she’s been shopping at aldi for ten years how come she hasn’t grasped the concept of not bagging at the checkout? All she had to do was sweep it all into the trolly and pack at the shelves!

I fully believe that a MNer would do this, it doesn't take much to set some people off and it's always a trauma! Aldi (and Lidl) need to redesign the checkout area where there's nowhere to put swiped goods, it's swiped then straight into a basket, your basket then replaces that basket and the customer is free to be as slow as they wish at the packing bench. This is how Aldi used to operate in Germany, worked like a dream.
Tigerstripe20 · 18/08/2021 16:28

My local Aldi is definitely a supermarket on speed , they go like the wind !
If it saves me money , gets me through the hell of shopping I am all for it
Sadly I am slightly inconvenienced at the moment due to an arm injury so will have to build my strength back up for a solo Aldi shop.
If this woman has been shopping in Aldi for so long so can't be oblivious to the way they work...

JudgeJ · 18/08/2021 16:31

@poorbuthappy

I always pack at the checkout. I still sweep it all into my trolley, but I've grouped the shopping together on the belt and have the bags in my trolley ready.
I'm sure that the rest of the queue appreciates your bags being ready in the trolley!
Voicefancier · 18/08/2021 16:33

@CassandraCross. Haha. I remember that. Easter Eggs are not essentials. Boil a cabbage and live off it for two weeks. 😂😂😂

billy1966 · 18/08/2021 16:33

The local one to me started out with this flying through it and the fellow toppled my 12 eggs so that they fell into my trolley and split all over my shopping.

The manager came along and I told him very calmly that it was both annoying and unnecessary.

I told him that some fruit had been bruised last week and now I had a shopping trolley half covered in smashed eggs.

It was a busy thursday morning and the place was busy.

I was deathly calm, but did say that I wasn't going to pay for bruised produce because his staff are under such pressure.

That is 10 years ago, and I have never had a problem again.

I find the staff in Aldi overwhelmingly great.

Someone flinging stuff at super speed is very annoying.

I certainly wouldn't tolerate it.
