I don’t have an Aldi near me, not been in one, but I’ve heard they’re pretty good? Is it worth risking my life to shop there?

I have dyspraxia and this always happens to me regardless of supermarket. Self service checkouts with scan and go tech has been a life changer for me.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/08/2021 15:28

Saw this awhile ago, nothing new both Aldi and Lidl are quick. I use Aldi and never take bags with me.

Sounds like she had a stressful day, with 3 kids in tow shopping.

butterpuffed · 18/08/2021 15:29

@CagneyNYPD

Oh and no way is she a Mumsnetter.
Well, she is, remember reading it.

Definitely MNer

Well op it is a risk but if you like a bit of an adrenaline rush it’s worth a try

Plus some great food

User7458 · 18/08/2021 15:33

I bet she is, loads of them cry and shake on here.

TheSockMonster · 18/08/2021 15:34

The first time I went to Aldi the checkout operator had to explain the pack-at-the-shelf rule to me Blush They were very nice about it. I then had to have the no baskets through checkout rule explained at a subsequent visit.

The checkout operator in the linked story seems very rude, but I hardly think it warrants a news story. I think the best approach would have been to ask them to replace anything that had fallen on the floor.

SoreusBacchus · 18/08/2021 15:41

Where I live we pack in the trolley, like anywhere else. Aldi checkout operators are fairly laid back. We're not people that go in for those sorts of corporate shenanigans!

Peanutsandchilli · 18/08/2021 15:43

I understand not bagging it at the checkout but, honest to god, some checkout assistants are twats. If someone puts things through faster than I can get it back in the trolley, I just go slower because it pissed me off. If it falls on the floor then I have to get someone to replace it so it's utterly pointless for them to shove it through at breakneck speed.

Crying and shaking, however, is for dramatic effect.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/08/2021 15:43

😅 most likely. 🤣
I nearly cry and shake in other supermarkets they're so slow.

PixelatedLunchbox · 18/08/2021 15:44

@Yoksha

This very same thing happened to me a few years ago. When I asked assistant to slow up a bit she responded with "We're not here for customer convenience". Taken aback I tried to keep up. Sheer fury drove me. In the end I just held up my hands and said "F**k you", and walked out leaving a half full trolley, food on the checkout and food on the floor. Never went back. I didn't melt down until I was in the car. Angry
That's exactly what I would do. Some of them are perfectly sadistic and take pleasure in being c*nts, practically throwing the groceries at you. Even when piling it into your trolley to bag it at the shelf area, some of them really whip the stuff fast. The counter is minuscule. I hate ALDI.
AngryWhompingWillow · 18/08/2021 15:45

Oh FGS! What a batshit drama queen! Confused

Toooldforthis321 · 18/08/2021 15:45

"... when the tin finally fell."

I visualised that in slow motion, then a sudden rush as a colleague came to diffuse (spread everyone and everything out involved) 🤣

WibbleyPie · 18/08/2021 15:45

This Aldi is local to me, and I read the story on a local paper, not a lot happens around here - it was probably a slow news day 🤣

I was in Lidl a while ago and there was some bloke having a go at an Lidl employee stacking the shelves, I strained to hear what the issue was but was unsuccessful.

Customer stormed off and the security guard ambled over to shelf stacker and said “what you have there is a Waitrose customer, in Lidl, expecting Waitrose customer service” Grin

lalafafa · 18/08/2021 15:47

I really don’t get the throwing in a trolley then re packing on a shelf. What a fucking waste of time.
Put heavy items at the front of the conveyer belt, fragile items at the back.
Line the trolley with 3 large bags for life.
Throw heavy items to the bottom of each bag, fragile items on top, done.
The cashier had never beaten me yet, I have to wait until they’ve activated the card payment. Not hard really.

CassandraCross · 18/08/2021 15:48

@Acrasia

She should definitely never shop in Germany, UK Aldi are the same speed as normal supermarkets, and then German Aldi and Lidl cashiers cause a sonic boom from the speed at which they scan items 😆 It’s so stressful that I only ever buy what I can carry in my hands from Aldi and Lidl. It’s actually not too bad here in general because most people pack straight into their own baskets (like this www.amazon.de/gp/aw/d/B06X97QTFJ/) rather than bags.
They got rid of the packing shelves in Aldi and Lidl in Spain where family live, as family pointed out the Spanish just ignored the 'rules' and carried on packing at the till as they do in every other shop and went the speed they decide to go at with the necessary breaks for conversation. No-one was ever sighted at the packing shelfGrin.
diddl · 18/08/2021 15:53

I must shop at a laid back Aldi in Germany.

The cashier pulled my trolley closer & started putting stuff in!

Boood · 18/08/2021 15:56

@NewlyGranny

Back to Waitrose with her!
The checkout staff at my local Waitrose wait until you’ve loaded everything onto the belt and are waiting at the packing end before they even start scanning. It’s great, you have time to sort everything into bags for fridge, freezer and cupboards. Or animal, mineral and vegetable, which I do because it’s more fun.
CassandraCross · 18/08/2021 15:56

At family's preferred supermarket in Spain the cashiers help you pack during scanning and when finished scanning and put the full bags in your trolley for you all whilst chatting pleasantly, no-one in the queue gets stressed or het up about it, all very calm and relaxed.

Greenmarmalade · 18/08/2021 15:57

Click and collect.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 18/08/2021 15:57

I'm very disappointed that there is not a picture of the woman and her children with their "sad" faces. I feel the Sun has let us down here. I'm sure The Daily Fail would have had their Sad faces plastered all over the article.

Spirael · 18/08/2021 15:57

I would assume the article is a hyperbole riddled mockery of what actually happened, and for that reason I feel that the woman is being unfairly lambasted. As a fellow mother, I sympathise with her.

I mean, we don't know for sure... But I'd guess her children were acting up, and she was trying to riot control them in the middle of a busy store. A situation that most of us will find very, very familiar! Meanwhile the checkout kept going, shopping was piling up... She asked them to wait for a moment, and was given a condescending "No-can-do, Love".

Stressful? Absolutely. Upsetting? Probably. Newsworthy? Not really.

But it's unlikely she actually went crying to the media. Later on, I'd bet she posted on social media. Saying something as innocuous as "Stressful situation at the checkout today, felt a bit upset. The staff could be more understanding," and tagging Aldi.

No reply from Aldi, but the tabloid media sniffer dogs found it. "How upsetting," they agree. "We'll raise this with Aldi too," they promise. "Do we have your permission to use the details?"

Suddenly she's the "TRAUMATISED mother, facing FEROCIOUS checkout staff, left CRYING and SHAKING!"

The media hound gets the money, and she gets the fallout.
