Where will the refugees coming to the UK live?

999 replies

Meeklynamechanged · 17/08/2021 22:16

In no way a goady thread, I fully support helping the people fleeing such horrid circumstances, but genuine question.. where will they live? Where do we put people?

Where I live we have people waiting 10 years for a council property. Most areas around the UK have a huge deficit in available housing that doesn't meet demand.

With so many families stuck in overcrowded hostels and B&B's, families of 5 in 1 bed flats, I can't see where all of the required the housing will come from?

Currently Balmoral is being used to 'hide Andrew' from a legitimate legal investigation

Balmoral is the Queen’s personal property. Even if this snide remark was true, she can do what the fuck she likes with it.

mustlovegin · 18/08/2021 00:09

it will come out of a central budget

This is funded with taxes also, where do you think the money comes from?

EsmeNoteSpelling · 18/08/2021 00:11

@ferretface

Meanwhile London is stuffed full of expensive, empty investment properties which contributes to the domestic housing shortage. We should stop courting billionaires and tax exiles and build houses for normal people to live in.
Wish there was a way to ‘like’ this. Will a quote do?
StoneofDestiny · 18/08/2021 00:13

And we can do what we like with the others she does not own. Think she has enough 'second, third, fourth..........' homes

Twatterati · 18/08/2021 00:13

@gardeninggirl68 - totally agree re the sharing etc, what I was trying to put across was that the housing ISN'T a nice 3 bed, brand new social housing place... it's the absolute bare minimum. And they are all hugely grateful. My gripe I think is that far too many people wrongly believe that us housing refugees/asylum seekers is somehow depriving a UK citizen of something they are more deserving of. And they are two completely different scenarios.

@Strawberrirose

They are also lots of empty buildings that could be be converted to housing.
Who do you propose pays for this?

There are also lots of problems with conversions, particularly from offices or very old buildings into apartments: fire risks, ventilation risks, damp, increased likelihood of leaks or insufficient plumbing for domestic water supply on multiple housing units etc etc... and also more "inconvenient" stuff (rather than dangerous) like lack of sound proofing, insufficient parking or safe access, amenities available locally, etc.

Fangdango · 18/08/2021 00:15

@mustlovegin

in this crowded island

Well, it is tiny and crowded, this is true

It's quite densely populated in the South East, with appalling housing policies. I don't think 5000 people a year are going to sink it.

If we were taking in 1.3 million refugees instead of 20 000, now ... we'd replace the people who've left since Brexit.

JoborPlay · 18/08/2021 00:16

Sgitty besits, houses hates with more people than rooms, rat infested garden sheds.

At least that's what our current asylum seekers live in. Moved every few weeks so they can't put down roots.

VioletSand · 18/08/2021 00:16

Following Grenfell and the sub-standard nature of much purpose-built residential housing, the push now is to tighten building regs, not loosen them to create more slums/ deathtraps.

VioletSand · 18/08/2021 00:18

@PenCreed

I'd also ask, if people are willing to give up their second bedroom to refugees, how about giving it up to people on the wait lists for housing?

People on the wait list for housing have recourse to public funds, not £35 a week and no permission to work. They also often have families - I can't fit a family in my spare room! The refugee hosting schemes are time limited, whereas sadly someone on the wait list for housing could be waiting years and having safe accommodation in someone's spare room would probably push them back down the priority list.

Also, it's our spare room, we chose to join the scheme because the way refugees and asylum seekers are treated is a disgrace and it's something we can do to help.

👏👏👏 You should be very proud of what you are doing, you are a wonderful person.
5zeds · 18/08/2021 00:20

Most are not educated and some are probably brainwashed or heavily traumatised. There is a polar world of difference between males and females. Perhaps female refugees who need most protection from the cavemen should be prioritised for shelter and shielded from ideological and physical barbaric extreme Islamic religious harm. Shock do you actually KNOW any refugees?

VioletSand · 18/08/2021 00:20

Where would the invited 5.4 million Hong Kong citizens be housed?

You think that every single citizen of Hong Kong is going to move to the UK?

You've been reading too many tabloids (hint: any is too many, if you don't want your brain to rot).

i did read that some of the people on the planes could well be taliban,and thats how they could move through countries undetected

i think we need to be extremely careful about this

but the pics of the plane that left yesterday with mainly men.....were they not the interpreters and aides who worked with our armed forces? they were promised refuge out of Afghan as they would have been at great risk due to their work

Ah there we go. Problem solved. Why didn’t public policy makers think of this. Honestly, this place makes the mind boggles sometimes.
5zeds · 18/08/2021 00:23

Hong Kong citizens are among the most hardworking and resourceful individuals you are ever likely to meet. If they come they will breathe life into our economy and help grow a country that will be a credit to them and to us. Remember only 24 years ago most considered themselves British. I think we should be very excited about them coming.

gardeninggirl68 · 18/08/2021 00:24

royal residences is a stupid idea.....they are mainly rural or set back from society

how would the refugees shop, seek support and help from agencies? they would be far out in the sticks miles from bus routes etc

BlackeyedSusan · 18/08/2021 00:25

Some will be earning good money and paying tax and buying their own home within 15 years or so. (one of our friends) they don't all stay reliant on the state. I should imagine that quite a few will be working hard once cleared to work.

Clocktopus · 18/08/2021 00:25

And could you imagine the Daily Mail headlines about refugees "living it up" in Royal palaces?

gardeninggirl68 · 18/08/2021 00:27

Helena......whats clarion got to do with this?

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 18/08/2021 00:27

My uncles offered up his granny flat in his garden on some charity thing.
We have surplus housing in our area and a lot of Syrian refugees who have integrated really well. We were dubious at first as they were housed on an estate thats notorius for trouble..... But they buddied them up with some of the matriarchs on the estate and with groups and get togethers organised by our multicultural forum theyve integtated really well. The kids especially. One lady has set up a really popular business selling crafts.

I haven't had a great deal to do with them tbh but one kf my friends lives next door to one of the families and the screams from one of their daughters night terrors are haunting. They resorted to sleeping downstairs at one point as they just couldnt cope with hearing it.

Hopefully with time theyll heal..... Personally I think everyone deserves a safe place to live. Those young (( unarmed)) men fleeing are somebodies sons. If that was my son id be pushing him onto the damn plane myself.
