To think that this isn’t comedy

I really do not find this funny and it is being funded by the Arts Council ie public monies. I’ve lost my sense of humour.

To answer my own question re: the Arts Council, their support is for the Outstage Us festival as a whole, of which the short play in question is just a part. It is not a direct endorsement of this particular work.

ScreamingMeMe · 18/08/2021 10:15

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

I take it everyone complains about comedy shows about suicide, death, depression, people making fun of their disabilities etc as well.

Or is it just complain worthy because this is trans related?

It does sound a bit shit tbh, but no more than many others.

I find Frankie Boyle's comedy revolting too, especially in light of his new persona (you'renot fooling me, Frankie!), and have said as much. I think probably many of us have

What do you mean by complain? Talk about it on here? I don't think anyone is suggesting trying to get it banned or anything, are they?

Good to know.

I will complain to the Arts council as this is public money being used to support it. It is very very hard to get arts council funding.

I suppose she is making the point that it is hard to get your breasts removed on the NHS because of all the tiresome bed blocking cancer patients. There could be a twist ending : our hero succeeds and dies of cancer because waiting lists have been increased by idiots like her?

MonsignorMirth · 18/08/2021 12:08

Promotes the idea that trans people are deceitful.
Horrid. Don't believe in censoring it though.

Slythermum · 18/08/2021 12:08

@ScreamingMeMe

An actor who was approached to take part responded with a long, considered email saying she had various concerns about the subject matter. The playwright has responded by tweeting that an email from a T actor will be read out at the performance. This tweet gives you the full correspondence:*

twitter.com/viktoriakay1/status/1427327520454725633?s=20

That is appalling behaviour. And so, so childish. What a horrible person Eleanor appears to be. I think their theatre career may be short-lived.

Wow, this is so upsetting. Women aren't allowed to object to offensive subject matter without threats if they don't want to perform because they find the subject matter offensive? How "kind".
BraveBananaBadge · 18/08/2021 13:22

I've just read the thread again and it's full of largely sensible replies calling the writer out for bullying. Yet there are supporters in there trying to claim some of the 'big T* accounts' 'found' the tweet and rallied to cause a pile on.

I try not to get riled up about Twitter no marks, but the way they can't see past themselves here - that any criticism must be an orchestrated campaign from an army of evil bogeywomen - speaks volumes. This writer's behaviour is awful and I can't imagine their work could be any good, either.

DelphiniumBlue · 18/08/2021 13:27

Tasteless in the extreme. Reminds me of the plot of "The Producers" and the song from there, "Springtime for Hitler". Somebody wins if it makes a loss?

2bazookas · 18/08/2021 13:46

Another trans man inadvertently revealing his REAL attitude to women.

GeorgeMichaelBluth · 18/08/2021 13:56

South Park actually did this with a character who gave himself testicle cancer so he could get a prescription for weed. So it's not even original.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 18/08/2021 14:03

Not very funny to me, like trying to prove that they deserve their double mastectomies sooner than cancer patients, many of whom also have to wait. I hate the implication that it's of equal importance.

ScreamingMeMe · 18/08/2021 16:05

That play, but unironically.

Snoozysnoozy · 18/08/2021 16:27

You don't have to watch it. You could've ignored it and no-one here would even have known it existed.

What the actual fuck!
DewDew83 · 18/08/2021 16:56

Sounds similar to an episode of South Park, where Randy (and then half the town) tries to give himself cancer so that he could bet a medical marijuana prescription.

Was quite funny tbf.

DewDew83 · 18/08/2021 17:33

Oh wow, I see people are actually complaining.

Per my (and another poster's) previous posts, this is basically the same plot as the Medicinal Fried Chicken episode of South Park, that first aired probably about 8 years ago and has been re-run plenty of times without any notable controversy.

If something can be a comedic plot on extremely popular tv show, I don't see why it can't also be in a play.

Why on Earth would I do that? What would that achieve if we all start ignoring abusive stuff?

I’m not sure South Park, Family Guy or Simpsons are good role models. But go ahead let’s not complain about anything and we will be back to Benny Hill and other dodgy racist 1960s shows and saying they are fine too

But we're talking about popular, contemporary comedy, not something decades old where standards have changed.

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 18/08/2021 17:48

It's horrible

But it does seem to be an excellent example of the vacuous narcissism that the whole gender identity movement seems to be based on

Yes I know - but the poster is saying we shouldn’t complain just because a similar story was in South Park. I’m just saying South Park is pretty sexist and not a good bar to measure things by.

Is it pretty sexist? It's done at least a couple of quite feminist episodes and a couple of overtly gender-critical episodes, including a recent(ish) one on women's sports.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/08/2021 18:06

YABU OP. You haven't seen the show, you have no idea how funny it is. And even if you did, comedy is subjective.

It is unreasonable and ridiculous to complain about something that you know nothing about.🙄
