To think that this isn’t comedy

I really do not find this funny and it is being funded by the Arts Council ie public monies. I’ve lost my sense of humour.

Crazy thing on Twitter shocker 🙄

Slythermum · 18/08/2021 08:24

Correction - I say flyer - it's a tweet by the performer, not a flyer. Can't even find a flyer in my "further research"

GreenEggsAndBacon · 18/08/2021 08:25

I had a breast cancer scare and my grandmother had breast cancer. I can’t see the funny side of this as all.

Cardboardeaux · 18/08/2021 08:26

@idontknowwhyibother

Wtf. Hmm

I get transcomedy and all that but poor taste. Doubt anyone would want to see that.

Is transcomedy something that identifies as being funny?...

Nothing to say on the subject matter then?
Helleofabore · 18/08/2021 08:40

It reminds me of the people who complained that breast cancer patients were prioritised before them on the NHS list for their double mastectomies at the beginning of covid.

bellinisurge · 18/08/2021 08:43

So many reasons to tell these dickheads to go fuck themselves but I was ordered only yesterday to Be Kind

So self-obsessed. The tweet is from a person who identifies as a stand up comic. This appears about as rooted in reality as it would be if I identified as having the Nobel Prize for Literature.

It's in response to another tweet from a person who identifies as a playwright, female name, they/them pronouns, says they are 'afab'. A short play this person has written is being performed somewhere. This is what it's about: Joshua’s home from That London. Home Home. For the first time in five years. He’s absolutely bricking it. His girlfriend is meeting his Mam for the first time & so is he. Because Josh forgot to tell his Mam that he's not a girl anymore, never was. Tits gone and everything. Shit.

An actor who was approached to take part responded with a long, considered email saying she had various concerns about the subject matter. The playwright has responded by tweeting that an email from a T* actor will be read out at the performance. This tweet gives you the full correspondence: twitter.com/viktoriakay1/status/1427327520454725633?s=20

With no apparent sense of irony, the playwright has this as their pinned tweet:

put out a casting call last week for a queer actor who could play a teenage girl and got more emails from men than i did from people who actually matched the brief.

gals and non-binary pals: put yourselves out there!! men certainly are!!

Feelingoktoday · 18/08/2021 08:44

@Slythermum

It's a transman (female to male) who is wanting "top surgery" (A full mastectomy) - and saying they are so desperate to have their breasts cut off that they are trying to "catch" breast cancer in order to skip the length of waiting for the surgery.

Offensive, bad taste, hurtful no matter how it is framed. I have tried to find out more about the show and there is scant little. Just a few videos where the transman in question gives a lukewarm self conscious performance of a bit of stand up and nothing else to "research a bit further" as one rainbow apologist has mentioned without any other information. Whilst the show itself may indeed be moving and stunning and brave - this flyer is disgusting, insulting and triggering.

I will be complaining to the arts council.

The theatre has amended the details so that you can’t find out anything about this particular performer. I have complained to the Arts Council. It’s not funny in any sense however woke you may be.

I don’t find it funny that young females want to cut off their healthy breasts either. But that’s an argument for another day.

WHAT 😳

ChainJane · 18/08/2021 08:45

It sounds pretty shit but then lots of people seem to like Mrs Brown's Boys so that shows people have different tastes (or lack thereof).

Unpleasant topics like cancer and rape can be the subject of comedy though, you just need to watch Jam, the early 2000s C4 series, for multiple examples of genuinely funny treatment of these topics.

That’s because as a result of the tweet the organisers and theatre have amended the details on the website.

A series like Jam would never get made today and even back then there was a furore about the cot death sketch, which personally I thought was absolutely horrible.

ScreamingMeMe · 18/08/2021 09:11

Wtf. Disgusting.

FrancescaContini · 18/08/2021 09:13

It’s beyond the pale 😡

AlmostSummer21 · 18/08/2021 09:17

Awful

That is appalling behaviour. And so, so childish. What a horrible person Eleanor appears to be. I think their theatre career may be short-lived.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 18/08/2021 09:28

I take it everyone complains about comedy shows about suicide, death, depression, people making fun of their disabilities etc as well.

Or is it just complain worthy because this is trans related?

It does sound a bit shit tbh, but no more than many others.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 18/08/2021 09:29

This is the perfect illustration of the deep misogyny behind the gender-identity movement. Men rejoicing in women’s suffering and death. Men die of breast cancer, in smaller numbers, and this is insulting to them too. But they are collateral damage. This is about woman-hate.

DrSbaitso · 18/08/2021 09:29

Incredibly poor taste but needs to be allowed.

I think these things do have a way of self regulating after a while. There'll be a die hard contingent wanting to be as offensive and nasty as possible but something like this generally offends too many people to get far long term. Giving it publicity is the worst thing you could do.

BraveBananaBadge · 18/08/2021 09:43

The sheer trivialisation of two very major, life-changing conditions is what grates. The person who wrote the tweet doesn't come across as the sharpest tool - and extremely immature - so I wouldn't trust them with the subject matter on that basis. That's not to say what they're doing should be off limits. I wonder about the Arts Council involvement though.

Or is it about the double standards that seem to be in play regarding free speech and what can be considered offensive?

BraveBananaBadge · 18/08/2021 09:54

That Twitter thread (about an unrelated work) is appalling. How the actress's email deserves public mockery is completely unfathomable. These people yelling 't*' are as thick as mince.

I'd find a comedy about someone trying to develop septicaemia in their legs, so that they could have them amputated in order to have a chance at becoming a paralympian pretty distasteful too.

I agree with this. I reserve my right to be disgusted though Wink
