How often do you clean your doorstep?

NDN being weird AF...always bothers me, with young DC, how friends and family bring dirt into the house, especially with COVID. So I always clean my step everyday as well as mopping downstairs floors. Neighbour thinks I'm being obsessed who's right?

You time would be better spent asking visitors to remove their shoes on entry!

My side of the family used to be a bit funny about it as I grew up in a shoes on house, but they soon got used to it, as I was firm and said my house, my rules! No way would I allow shoes inside when I had a crawling baby and carried it on. Most new visitors ask if I want them to take them off nowadays, and if they don’t I tell them to.

I don’t have an actual door step as the path is on the same level but have a rubber mat thingy in front of the front door but I jet wash the whole path in spring and a few times in the summer when I’m doing the patio and decking at the back.

Peace43 · 16/08/2021 19:54

Never!! Downstairs floor brushed everyday and mopped once a week (more if noticeably muddy!)

Blippibloppi · 16/08/2021 19:54

Once. Before I repainted it to put the house on the market.

GiveMeNovocain · 16/08/2021 19:55

How is your neighbour being weird? Are they commenting on your cleaning or is their doorstep dirty?

StopGo · 16/08/2021 19:57

@ChiaraRimini do you Donkey Stone your front steps?

WestendVBroadway · 16/08/2021 19:57

I do this daily(when I have been transported back to the 1950's)
Here are some pics I took this morning, as you can see sometimes I stretch out onto the pavement and give that a good scrub as well.

I have a covered but open porch which gets dusty and bits of debris into it so I regularly sweep it and this weekend I washed the porch walls down and mopped the floor! It did cross my mind that the neighbours might think I'm a bit odd but I don't care, it's my home and I like taking care of it.

OTOH I'm not one for multiple changes of sheets and towels a week and nor do I bleach the bejeezus out of everything I own.

FionnulaTheCooler · 16/08/2021 20:01

I don't have a doorstep as such, it's a flat driveway that goes right up to the front door. It's never been cleaned before but DH has recently acquired a power washer from the Aldi middle aisle so I'm hoping it will get done soon.

2pinkginsplease · 16/08/2021 20:01

I have never cleaned my doorstep! Is that a normal thing?

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 16/08/2021 20:03

Nope

Imnothereforthedrama · 16/08/2021 20:03

@SomebodysMum

This is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever read.
Agreed never disappointed by the bonkers threads .
Budsaway · 16/08/2021 20:10

Our driveway gets really mossy so we clean that down once a year in Spring and the step gets done then too.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/08/2021 20:12

I'm desperately trying to think of something that no sane person will ever clean so I can start a thread in the hope of drawing in the bonkers Mumsnetters who will swoop in to announce that they clean these things daily.

I've already learned in the last couple of days that there are people who wash school bags as often as fortnightly, and now keys and doorsteps daily.

PermanentTemporary · 16/08/2021 20:14

I have WhatsApp so don't need to

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 16/08/2021 20:18

I don’t have a doorstep but I don’t clean the floor outside my front door ever. It gets weeded and swept a few times a year, as needed but never cleaned.

I have a dog, a cat, kids and light coloured hard floors, they are mopped once a week and spot cleaned as necessary. We don’t wear shoes indoors 98% of the time and use good quality mats on the indoor/outdoor thresholds to keep the majority of outdoor dirt off the floors and mean they don’t need cleaning daily. I vacuum every other day ish though as my dog is a shedding breed.

Snoken · 16/08/2021 20:19

I sweep the porch once/twice a month if it’s been windy as leaves tend to collect there. Inside I clean once a week.

CheeseyMcCheeseface · 16/08/2021 20:21

@tiredanddangerous

I can honestly say that in all my 40 years I have never cleaned a door step.
Same
OhGiveUp · 16/08/2021 20:24

Once a week when I clean the front door, wash the doormat cover and sweep the path.
Just something I've always done.

godmum56 · 16/08/2021 20:25

I have no doorstep

Colinthecucumber · 16/08/2021 20:26

I don’t think I’ve ever clean my doorstep!

Looubylou · 16/08/2021 20:47

Would you not then also have to clean the path, then the street, then the next street. Just the step makes no sense in terms of bringing dirt in. I don't actually have a step. We don't wear shoes indoors though. If I did have step, I'd clean it if it looked particularly dirty. I don't mop very often - but hoover everyday. When I had a dog I mopped or washed floors a lot. My steam mop is difficult to push - I think this is what puts me off. The indoor area around doormat gets flash wiped if any marks from shoes coming in - very light flooring. I think your neighbour may have a point - but if it keeps you happy, and you have time...

SpiderinaWingMirror · 16/08/2021 20:49

Never

LadyJaye · 16/08/2021 20:51

I have never once, in the 15+ years I've lived in my house (tenement close) cleaned my own doorstep, although the close is cleaned weekly, and I expect people to take their shoes off at the door.

@WineIsMyCarb

Are you a working class northern woman from the 1920s? If so, YANBU...what would the rest of the street think of you if your step were covered in coal dust?!?! If you are from the 21st century and have central heating then I think you can save yourself a job most weeks Smile
I vaguely recall my Aunt who lived in a terraced house with no garden washing the step and outlining the edges with 'dolly stone', a yellow chalky block dipped in water.
