Why does Mumsnet frequently pull threads off?

EddyF · 15/08/2021 22:11

It seems very micro management. I was reading a really informative thread today and it has been pulled.

For a site that allows swearing, it is super sensitive. They will also say they are checking things in the background but I have never seen a thread put back on.

It’s just petty.

Too many of the woke brigade on here.

Sparklingbrook · 15/08/2021 22:14

Trolls

knittingaddict · 15/08/2021 22:19

Do you want to read threads that are a fantasy made up by trolls and treat it like it's real? I know I don't. I'm more than happy for the attention seekers and time wasters to go.

knittingaddict · 15/08/2021 22:20

Which informative thread? It's unusual for a genuinely information thread to go without a good reason. Was it a sensitive subject?

EddyF · 15/08/2021 22:21

But it wasn’t a troll thread; it was actually quite educational and had links to watch documentaries etc to learn more.

YABU. Try asking in site stuff.

FlissMumsnet · 15/08/2021 22:21

Hi EddyF,

It's a valid question - Mumsnet is well known for it's high swear-count afterall!

We can remove threads for a variety of reasons; users being identified in real life, legal cases being prejudiced by speculation, trolls or reverse posters who may be goading others to behave badly. We try to limit the amount of threads we remove as we do recognise we can lose useful, interesting content, as you say.

Be reassured we do reinstate threads at times too - it really does happen. Often we just need a little time to check things out before we can put the thread back with confidence.

Hope that helps explain a little.

If you are talking about the Jewish thread then it is stupid it was pulled, there was some really interesting Jewish women posting on their about their religion and culture.

WomanStanleyWoman · 15/08/2021 22:24

Personally, unless there’s a chance a poster is in genuine danger, I don’t think threads should be pulled. ‘The OP is concerned this is identifying’. Maybe think about that before describing your family and the distinctive village you live in before posting this alongside your dilemma!

ZaZathecat · 15/08/2021 22:24

Personally, I'm glad that MN actually has standards, unlike a lot of sn platforms

It was about another culture/religion. It was completely respectful and those who belonged in the religion or knew a lot about it were giving really good insight.

I am part Black. There have been many threads about my own people and it doesn’t offend me (I find them tiring and will mostly ignore unless there are no other threads interesting me).

How are people supposed to learn apart from just ‘googling’. It is not the first time; Mumsnet pull threads that are nothing troll(ish) about them. It’s very heavy handed for a adult site.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 15/08/2021 22:28

I don't think it;s 'heavy handed' at all. There must have been some reports about the thread for them even to see it.

Yes and I didn’t even get a chance to copy the recommended readings/films.

Oh I'm gutted that thread was pulled, there were some recommendations of TV shows to watch that I was gonna go back to!

Agree MN is heavy handed with pulling threads far more than they used to be. I started a thread about a decade old criminal case that is done and dusted and perpetrators found and in prisoner etc and they pulled it!

ufucoffee · 15/08/2021 22:35

Why was the Jewish thread pulled? It was really interesting. I learnt a lot just from reading it. Wonder if it was the one person who said they found it offensive complained? Angry

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/08/2021 22:37

Oh ffs, I wanted to read that later!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/08/2021 22:37

I presume this was the Jewish thread, which was really interesting and informative.

@MNHQ can you tell us why it was taken down and whether it will be reinstated? I read it not long before it was removed and didn’t see anything delete-worthy.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/08/2021 22:38

For anyone wanting the Orthodox documentary link, it’s here: m.youtube.com/watch?v=lb_uwSN9L3k

Thank you so much; this is what I wanted. Do you remember the Netflix series that was mentioned a couple of times.

I loved that thread. I was saving some of it for bedtime.

I can understand deletion of offensive comments in a thread but to pull a seemingly polite thread confused me.

OP posts:
ThorIsAGod · 15/08/2021 22:44

@Sparklingbrook but those reasons don't seem to apply to the thread that was pulled 🤷🏼‍♀️. It seemed interesting and I was going to go back to learn more but now it's gone poof.

I agree @EddyF Particularly the 'we have taken this down while we check it out' deletion messages they are never reinstated or updated or explained. It is happening a lot at the moment and it puts me off posting.
owlbethere · 15/08/2021 22:49

@EddyF one of us is probably the Netflix documentary. There is a film called unorthodox which is also really interesting.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/08/2021 22:54

@EddyF one of the Netflix series mentioned was “Unorthodox”. I’ve seen it, it’s very interesting. I understand that some don’t agree with what’s in it, although the author of the book on which it’s based maintains that that was her experience of that particular sect.
