We have holidayed in the UK for ages. Odd one in France but generally North Wales or the South Coast.

Go to the beach today and get sneery looks from certain groups, who were also being similarly sneery to others who were like us. Our crime? We came with a full beach set up. Pop up tent (most important!) picnic, towels, more towels, waterproof jackets and a few blankets. Yes it took some carrying (about the only thing I have found I hate about single parenting is that its all on me to carry it all!) but when the heavens opened, we went into our tent and waited it out, then when the shower had passed, out we came again. Whereas the "One bag with swim suits and a towel" mob were all in a mass panic and trying to find some shelter.

Holidays in the UK require more prep than getting your bikini on and popping to the pool! I rather suspect that there will be a lot more pop up tents on the beach tomorrow than the 4 I saw today!

Oh and yes....the seagulls will take your food out of your hands, thats why there are signs EVERYWHERE saying that its advisable not to each out in the open as the seagulls are aggressive. I saw a father read one sign, say it was probably an exagerration and then have to comfort his terrified child who had his sandwich nicked.

So yes, I do feel a tiny bit smug.

Yep - def allowed a pleased inwards smile I think! Obv everyone does the beach differently but it’s nice when a plan comes together! Enjoy your week!

PolytheneRam · 16/08/2021 14:43

I obviously check it isn't travelling. You'd love the camp site I'm on at the monent. There's music blasting out everywhere.

PolytheneRam · 16/08/2021 14:44

And there's nothing tinny about the sound coming from a Minirig

Marmitemarinaded · 16/08/2021 14:47

My UK staycation…. Cost me more than £2k for a week!

Admittedly… beautiful sea view air bnb in south east. I didn’t hold back on spending given we’ve rescheduled aboard holiday to next year.

But I wouldn’t describe a UK staycation as necessarily the sole domain of the skint!!

AdelindSchade · 16/08/2021 14:56

We went to the beach the other day with the tent, chairs and food and we were so smug we were making ourselves laugh about it. 'Ooh get us. Well done us'. We even had homemade hummus in the picnic.

Do you work on commission?

Well obviously you didn't need to hold back on the spending Hmm

Wasn't that the point she was making? That UK staycations aren't necessarily a cheap option?

And why the disapproval? How much money is someone allowed to spend on a holiday?

moynomore · 16/08/2021 15:47

Surely it has been long decided that the term "staycation" refers to taking time off work and staying at home - in your own home. Not elaborate beach holidays in the UK.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 16/08/2021 15:49

You're braver than me op , the only things I want to trail to the beach are my book, suntan lotion and a very large cocktail

MrsBobDylan · 16/08/2021 16:27

We always holiday in the UK. This summer we are taking our teardrop trainer and micro campervan on lots of mini breaks.

People laugh at our teardrop trailer, as it is a hobbit house on wheels.

Our awning-pitching skills are crap and this year we accidentally broke the fencing to the entrance coming into the campsite and broke part of the teardrop camper in the process.

It has rained, my hips ache from sleeping in a tiny space with Velcro pug dogs, the handle fell off the door to the camper and has been mended with duct tape and the leg broke off the table.

I am having a great time and genuinely love this type of holiday. However, I am currently lying in my camper van while the kids play cards. Awesome!

That is the point of my post!! Grin

Decided by whom?! Grin
beela · 16/08/2021 17:25

Sounds like a very sneery beach all round to be honest.

We were on a UK beach today, everyone was minding their own business and enjoying themselves. I couldn't tell you how much kit the other families did or didn't have.

Who cares whether the sound is tinny or not? Inflicting your music on other people in a public place is just obnoxious.
OwlinaTree · 16/08/2021 23:29

The people who are setting up camp, BBQ, tents, loads of windbreaks... I think some people just can't sit down and relax.

When we go camping one of our mates is like this, constantly going round hammering in ropes or slightly moving the gazebo, or setting up the windbreak around the BBQ, or rearranging the furniture. He loves it! I call him camp dad. Grin

CambsAlways · 17/08/2021 17:26

Why do you feel the need to feel smug anyway, what an awful trait to be smug ! I’m sure nobody really cares do they🤣🤣🙄🙄

Bugbabe1970 · 17/08/2021 17:31

Strange!
I live near the beach....I'm a one bag kind of gal! If it rains I just pop in the car and drive home....smug! Oooops sorry!!

ilovechocolate07 · 17/08/2021 17:31

We holiday in UK a lot and some days people are more organised than others. Nothing to be smug about.

Mumontour85 · 17/08/2021 17:33

Honestly, I feel like you are projecting and there were no sneers! Hurray for you being a single mum and for being so prepared, but I highly doubt anyone else on that beach gave a single toss what you had or did!

NurseMumMe · 17/08/2021 17:50

Smug mum here too- single mum- head to beach with camping trolley/wagon, beach tent, smallest child sat in it, cool box, buckets spades, eldest kids pulling it, kite, towels etc- easy peasy and set up for the day!
Oh how the wagon-less stare in envy (although mock us here 🤣)

Christinatherabbit · 17/08/2021 18:08

I'm sure I wouldn't notice or care and if I did I would move on and not think about any of it again? They sneered at you for having a tent, you sneered at them for not paying attention to the signs. Sounds like a great day out 🤦‍♀️

waitingpatientlyforspring · 17/08/2021 18:20

@Pinkchocolate

Mass panic because it rained in the UK? I’m that parent with one bag and a couple of towels and if it rained I’d laugh it off, I wouldn’t be looking at others in envy because they’re dry while we get drenched (again). I think you’re overthinking it.
Completely agree. We always holiday in the uk, my children have never been abroad but we still don't all own/bring what you do. A picnic blanket, couple of towels and drinks - we usually buy chips and ice cream at the beach so no to bring a picnic. I've never had it rain when we go as we look at the forecast first. I've seen people with a tent at the beach but have to admit I just think 'what a palaver!'
SummerHouse · 17/08/2021 18:22

We took a HUGE camping windbreak to the beach. Oh, how they sneered. Oh, how right they were. The word carnage was invented for this endeavour.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 17/08/2021 18:23

I'd give up, Pyongyangkipperbang, you've posted a light-hearted post that ought to have been discernible as such but alas, it's the wrong day or wrong side of tea-time, or you've just ruffled some huffy feathers out there.

Considering the absolutely fake and nauseating dross that gets a rousing welcome from the many cheerleaders here, you've just been unlucky with your audience.

I'm now going to look up one-man-tents to see if I can find one suitable. Grin
