We have holidayed in the UK for ages. Odd one in France but generally North Wales or the South Coast.

Go to the beach today and get sneery looks from certain groups, who were also being similarly sneery to others who were like us. Our crime? We came with a full beach set up. Pop up tent (most important!) picnic, towels, more towels, waterproof jackets and a few blankets. Yes it took some carrying (about the only thing I have found I hate about single parenting is that its all on me to carry it all!) but when the heavens opened, we went into our tent and waited it out, then when the shower had passed, out we came again. Whereas the "One bag with swim suits and a towel" mob were all in a mass panic and trying to find some shelter.

Holidays in the UK require more prep than getting your bikini on and popping to the pool! I rather suspect that there will be a lot more pop up tents on the beach tomorrow than the 4 I saw today!

Oh and yes....the seagulls will take your food out of your hands, thats why there are signs EVERYWHERE saying that its advisable not to each out in the open as the seagulls are aggressive. I saw a father read one sign, say it was probably an exagerration and then have to comfort his terrified child who had his sandwich nicked.

So yes, I do feel a tiny bit smug.

I love MN

Someone manages to be offended and start an argument because not everyone goes in the water 😂 You can't make that up!

Beach wars, sorry OP you sound the sneerinest in this story

Marmitemarinaded · 16/08/2021 12:34

@Qwerty789

Yes I know a sneer when I see one!

Yes, I imagine you catch one in the mirror an awful lot.....

We have an elaborate beach set up too. We recently bought one of those festival trolley things and it's a game changer. We still have to spend a few minutes dragging the trolley and pushchair down the beach, but it beats the previous attempts at carrying everything from the car park.

We plan on attending some festivals next year too, so we can use it to carry both the toddler and the beer. Winning.

Our beach set up consists of:

Camping chairs (essential with bad back)
Beach tent (provides shade and changing pod)
Cool box
Rug
Buckets, spades, etc
2 x wind break
Towels
Swim suits
Sun cream
Bag for rubbish
Minirig speaker
Power bank
Inflatable orca
Changing bag
Kite
Cricket set.

It all fits in the trolley

Flipping "staycations" you mean...

You are not wrong.

lazylinguist · 16/08/2021 13:42

And for those saying that when you are on the beach you are wet anyway because of the sea, we are not as we dont go in the sea thanks to being pathetic about seaweed

Ah - this explains everything. I can imagine that anyone who's scared of seaweed might not have the resilience to venture onto a beach without a tent and blankets. What on earth is the point of going to the beach if you don't go in the sea? Confused Might as well have a sandpit at home, and save yourself the bother of lugging all that stuff to the beach!

I'm currently in South Wales on holiday. Weather's really not great. We're off to the beach shortly for swimming, body boarding, a bit of beach bat-and-ball and a race around withthe dog. I expect there will be people with pop-up tents. I won't sneer at them, but I certainly won't be envying them. Sitting in a pop-up tent twiddling my thumbs isn't very appealing!

lazylinguist · 16/08/2021 13:46

UK holidays are grim.

What a ridiculous statement. Why would they be any more grim than in most other countries? We have beautiful coastline and countryside and nice places to stay, just like other holiday destinations. Unless you're one if those people who just likes going to resort hotel complexes in hot countries and frying yourself on a lounger all day, I guess. I find that much more grim tbh.

how do people manage to go through life if they must ask this question and can't figure out the answer by themselves. Puzzling.

Minirig speaker

Now this, this I would judge. And move as far away as possible from.

Almost as puzzling as going and sitting on some sand in a tent all day.

Funkyslippers · 16/08/2021 14:01

UK holidays are grim I've had a UK holiday for the past 3 years and they have been anything but grim. In particular the holiday we had on the Isle of Wight was utterly fantastic, we didn't need to go abroad, hopped on the ferry and I didn't want to come home. And I've definitely had 1 or 2 grim holidays abroad!

I didn't realise the choice was either being in the water, or sitting on sand in a tent all day and nothing else.

Oh hell yes! I like to think I’m pretty live and let live, but people playing music in public places annoys the shit out of me. Very antisocial.
TheKeatingFive · 16/08/2021 14:04

The over thinking from the OP is insane. Enjoy your holiday. Don’t worry about what others may or may not be thinking of you. Try not to feel smug when other people get wet/have their sandwich taken,

You come across as incredibly insecure.

We went to St Ives a couple of months ago. Best holiday I've ever been on - UK or abroad.
TwooThirty · 16/08/2021 14:16

@PolytheneRam please leave your speaker at home: the music travels so much further than you think and is really tinny and irritating.

MaryMcCarthy · 16/08/2021 14:22

I very much doubt that strangers were sneering at the OP, and if they were I doubt it was because of how much stuff they were carrying.

Why do you care about what other people think? Just go and have a good time. The fact you've come home and written paragraphs about strangers on the beach who you didn't even interact with says more about you than them.

Iusedtobesoooomuchfun · 16/08/2021 14:26

Well I have always lived near the sea. My whole life... I have never owned a beach tent. Or a wind breaker.
You might holiday in the UK every year, but that doesn't make you an expert! I'm glad you had a nice time but this thread is a bit strange!

Iusedtobesoooomuchfun · 16/08/2021 14:29

@Halloaten

@Halloaten That's because you're stuck up. If you think the country you live in is grim then you should move! But maybe you're to stuck up but not rich enough to live in a non grim country!!
seasonalremarks · 16/08/2021 14:34

That's what skint families have been doing for years hmm

Why do you have to be skint to enjoy a break in your own country?

seasonalremarks · 16/08/2021 14:36

Iusedtobesoooomuchfun

Yes I am bloody bored of everyone saying how crap our country is.

I love UK holidays!
