Dog ate a kilo of neighbours food

Sitting here mortified, our dog has gone into the back garden and next door, through their open door, must have jumped up on the counter and has eaten a huge, round tupperware box full of their dinner 🙈😵it was spaghetti and meat (no garlic or onions she said) so our dog should be okay.
Dp has been round and apologised profusely and offered to pay for the food/pick up some nice Italian food from a restaurant nearby, they won’t accept.
They’re sort of laughing but mainly just gobsmacked, suffice to say that our dog can’t go in the garden again until they’ve gone (their house is a holiday home)
What would you do? It was a kilo of food!

Supermarket or restaurant voucher without question. I would also update on how I was going to secure the dog in the garden, training etc.

Wolframhart · 15/08/2021 17:14

Get a fence?

thistimelastweek · 15/08/2021 17:15

Dog-proofing my garden would be a priority.

Nice bottle of wine for the neighbours.

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/08/2021 17:15

I'd make the offer you did, and if they declined figure they weren't bothered enough to put you out. They have a holiday home, I imagine they're not particularly bothered about losing 5 quids with food and aren't holding the actions of your dog against you.

girlmom21 · 15/08/2021 17:15

Hahaha that's made me smile!

Go and get them a bottle of wine and the ingredients for another meal - so they don't need to have spaghetti if they don't fancy it anymore Grin

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/08/2021 17:16

And if I was them, I would be seriously annoyed at the imposition of a restaurant voucher! a bit annoyed at a supermarket one, if it's any of that it's cash.

BatshitBanshee · 15/08/2021 17:20

  1. Secure your dog.

  2. A JustEat voucher, or equivalent.

I'd be shocked/impressed/amused too but I'd probably expect some sort of offering in return for your dog stealing the leftovers Grin

AmyDudley · 15/08/2021 17:21

If they won't accept money, I'd buy them a nice bottle of wine. If my neighbours dog broke into my house and ate a load of food (and it would be a shitload of food - he's a labrador!) I'd find it funny and wouldn't be bothered about recompense. I'd be more worried about the dog eating something that would make him sick (which again, he does regularly because he's a labrador).

cherrybonbons · 15/08/2021 17:22

Who makes spaghetti without garlic or onions?!

Summerisoverrated · 15/08/2021 17:23

They’re older and really not the going to restaurant type, she’s very homely and loves to cook. God I’m cringing 🙈they were putting it there and she came back in to serve it as it was cooling down, she said there was literally nothing left, she didn’t know what had happened!
I was thinking of bottle of wine, flowers and chocs tomorrow as an apology from our dog 🤷🏻‍♀️Ffs 🙈

@BatshitBanshee It wasn’t leftovers, it was their whole dinner..and some to save/freeze I assume if it was in a huge Tupperware box and 1 kilos worth (there’s only 3 of them)

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/08/2021 17:25

Oops Smile

Summerisoverrated · 15/08/2021 17:25

@cherrybonbons That’s what I thought and is what I’m worried about! Dp said didn’t have that in, but it does seem weird to me.

GCAcademic · 15/08/2021 17:25

It’s a Labrador, isn’t it?

icedcoffees · 15/08/2021 17:25

How did your dog get out of your garden?

Essentialironingwater · 15/08/2021 17:26

Haha, brilliant. I would bring them a bottle of wine or something. But seriously who makes spaghetti with neither garlic nor onions? Are they carnivorous Jains?!

Summerisoverrated · 15/08/2021 17:27

@AmyDudley Yes, they were more worried about that. I’m worried about her too, dp is more angry at her and said she deserves to vomit 😲he was angry and didn’t mean it but I am worried

I think the flowers, wine and chocs are great - and a card from the dog both apologizing and praising her cooking. (They’re obviously a little amused by the hairy little thief.)

ancientgran · 15/08/2021 17:29

My dog jumped on the worktop and consumed a whole chicken that was cooling down before carving. There wasn't a scrap left. I couldn't figure out where the chicken had gone, I checked the oven, the fridge, everywhere and then he jumped back up and licked the empty plate and I realised what he had done. I was terrified the bones were going to kill him but no he was fine and we were hungry.

At least I didn't have the embarrassment of having to face other people he'd stolen from.

They sound like they are being nice about it.

Summerisoverrated · 15/08/2021 17:29

@icedcoffees Our houses have a large connecting back garden, we live abroad and it’s more of a thing here. We could put a fence down the middle but it would make both our garden areas smaller and they’re only here 2-3 times a year on holiday. They rarely go in the back either, more the front. So she literally walked round to their side and went in through the back kitchen door! She was gone for like 2 minutes

To make amends deliver a bottle of wine in a gift bag and an envelope with some cash tucked inside. I would waive off money because I really wouldn’t care about the lost money, but would accept the wine as a gesture.

It really doesn’t matter how much he ate. Once he had a bite, they weren’t going to eat any of it.

Ah okay, I was thinking she'd jumped the wall like my beagle did once Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/08/2021 17:31

Oh bless her. Oops 😂😂😂 The holiday home neighbour sounds lovely. Yes I’d get them a gift.

StrangeToSee · 15/08/2021 17:31

I think they’re gobsmacked that you let your dog get into their garden and house. I’d be furious if a neighbour’s dog did that! Not at the food (that part’s quite amusing in a way) but imagine coming into your kitchen and finding a random dog in there! You don’t know where else in the house he’d been, if he’d done a wee or a poo somewhere, if he’d been upstairs. They could have young kids or pets, or be afraid of dogs.

I guess they had to disinfect the entire kitchen too, if your dog had been sniffing all over the worktops in search of food and putting his paws up, shedding hair etc.

I’d drop an apology card and a bottle of wine round, and immediately raise your fence to stop the dog doing it again. What if he slips out into the garden undetected?

AlexaShutUp · 15/08/2021 17:33

I'm sorry, OP, but this really made me laugh. Your ddog is a total CF! Grin

Your DP offered to get food from a restaurant - I'd have accepted this tbh. As they haven't, if they won't take cash, I think flowers/wine/choc would be a suitable gesture.

I hope that your naughty ddog enjoyed his cheeky meal and that he is OK afterwards.
