Dog ate a kilo of neighbours food

Sitting here mortified, our dog has gone into the back garden and next door, through their open door, must have jumped up on the counter and has eaten a huge, round tupperware box full of their dinner 🙈😵it was spaghetti and meat (no garlic or onions she said) so our dog should be okay.
Dp has been round and apologised profusely and offered to pay for the food/pick up some nice Italian food from a restaurant nearby, they won’t accept.
They’re sort of laughing but mainly just gobsmacked, suffice to say that our dog can’t go in the garden again until they’ve gone (their house is a holiday home)
What would you do? It was a kilo of food!

My dog has had food with onion and garlic in it before and been fine (stolen scraps intended for the chickens to eat)

phishy · 15/08/2021 17:57

I think your dog did them a favour. No garlic or onion? It would have been bland as fuck.

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

I've owned (and still have!) dogs that would do this given half a chance. I would think it was hilarious and not be at all cross. I'd only be worried in case the dog was ill. I might be a bit fed up if I was really busy and needed my tea before/after work or something but would realise it was an accident and have a take away or cheese on toast. I'd really appreciate your offer.

I do love dogs though 😍

Me too. If I'd been the neighbours I would have found this hilarious!

Though as an owner I would have been mortified if one of my DDogs had done this to someone else. The card and gifts sounds like a great idea.

phishy · 15/08/2021 18:00

I would not have found this hilarious and would have had to throw the bowl.

Dog saliva. Urgh.

Am more shocked anybody would prepare spaghetti without either garlic or onions tbf...
AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 15/08/2021 18:01

@RaininSummer

Hilarious. Probably did them a favour as pasta and meat sounds vile. One of my friends had a dalmatian puppy once and whilst standing in the street chatting, she saw it out it's head in her friend's shopping bags and snarf two pasties. She didn't say anything apparently.
They've cooked it themselves, I think we can safely say that they enjoy how it tastes Why would it be a favour to leave them with nothing to eat or facing the prospect of making something else

OP, I know everyone on here thinks that everyone else in the world likes “a nice bottle of wine” but please make sure they are at least wine drinkers and get an idea of which one they like before possibly giving them a gift that they'll never drink.

Seesawmummadaw · 15/08/2021 18:02

Another who can’t get over the no onion and garlic. What kind of evil people do pasta with no onion or garlic? I would be wary of them.

Booboosweet · 15/08/2021 18:02

I wouldn't be very amused if someone's dog ate my dinner.

category12 · 15/08/2021 18:04
@StrangeToSee It’s right next door, so she’s asked around and done it so bloody quickly! Yes, Dp is very annoyed but I’m quietly seeing the funny side too 😬I will get them nice gifts tomorrow and basically won’t be allowed into the back garden now whilst they’re here ( can go in once they leave as obviously their house will be all locked up)
Maybe you should consider training the dog or some sort of practical measure so that your dog learns to stay out of the neighbour's side. Doesn't seem right that you treat the whole area as the dog's to use when they're not there.

PumpkinSpiceWoman · 15/08/2021 18:04

@cherrybonbons

Who makes spaghetti without garlic or onions?!
Someone who had a spooky premonition that a dog would come along and eat it? Or someone who has problems digesting onions and garlic?
MrsDeaconClaybourne · 15/08/2021 18:04

I'm another one who knew it would be a lab! I can just imagine the guilty but quietly pleased with himself face 🤣

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/08/2021 18:08

I got 2 greedy labs too, got to put everything out their reach.

Good job it happened to someone with a sense of humour then Grin
ShowOfHands · 15/08/2021 18:10

@girlmom21 there are many reasons why a person might not find a dog stealing their dinner funny. It doesn't mean they have no sense of humour whatsoever. That's pretty unkind tbh.

I'd likely laugh nowadays but back when I was a skint and exhausted new parent, I'd probably have sobbed.

SheWoreYellow · 15/08/2021 18:11

Can labradors get up on the worktop? I’m thinking greyhound.

In fairness, the OP'S DP did offer to go and collect an alternative meal from a local restaurant. Of course some people would be upset about it, but it's just one of those things, surely.

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/08/2021 18:13

Well not onto the work top, but stand up on their hind legs to reach food. Although given half the chance my nearly 2 yr old lab would.

Yeah if your dinner had been stolen and you had nothing to eat for a week, perhaps, but that's not the case here...

That’s what I was wondering.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/08/2021 18:18

I would definitely give them some money and/or a bottle of wine etc. to apologise.

I wouldn't be finding this funny either, to be honest. I have no problems finding other things funny but that's a LOT of food your dog has snaffled - what are they going to do for dinner now?

My husband's nickname is "the labrador" as he always tries to have a bit of whatever anyone else is eating, and has been known to wolf leftovers (that would have made a meal for 4 of us) by himself.
I don't find his behaviour amusing either.

sueelleker · 15/08/2021 18:19

And I'd probably skip her next two meals; after a kilo of spag.bol. she can't possible be hungry for a while! (Forgot we were talking about a lab-they're bottomless pits)

Wintercoffee · 15/08/2021 18:21

Definitely would give them money or a voucher for a restaurant!

Summerisoverrated · 15/08/2021 18:22

@SheWoreYellow Lab/whippet cross 🤣

HangingOver · 15/08/2021 18:23

Lol Doggo is absolute CF Grin

Summerisoverrated · 15/08/2021 18:24

@SheWoreYellow She can def stand up on her legs and get food off the counter, has tried here in the past, we can’t leave anything out after cooking
