My parents are Anti-Vax and think they are more clever

My parents are in their early 50s , both work and when covid first started my mum was first to go and wear face mask and buy boxes of antibac gels of from amazon.

Now... they think covid is basically a piece of shit made of story and they laugh at people who still wear masks or take the vaccine suggesting that the are the "clever ones" because they know more.
I guess it's easy for them to say and laugh when they haven't actually lost anyone due to covid(luckily) .....
I personally know friends who had lost their loved ones and my views are completely different.
I stop pushing them to get the vaccination because each time I have it ended in big arguments.
I had covid while being pregnant and seriously it was the worst 2 weeks of my life, luckily I didn't need to be hospitalised.

They aren't scientists or doctors and it passes me right off that they gather their knowledge from Google/Facebook and other ridiculous sources. 🙄

I want them to be safe.

They believe that all vaccinated people will basically die soon due to effect and that the vaccination is being tested on us right now.

I wouldn't care any longer about their views if not that every single thing that happens is seen as a covid vaccine side effect, for example - my auntie got lost last weekend, she basically got herself so drunk to the point she passed out and nobody was able to find her.
She was so drunk that she fell and slept on grass on the country side.
Whole family was very worried, she has been found safe after a good few hours however my parents put it down to Covid vaccine side effects and she had her jab 1 week before.

It is getting really ridiculous.
I just hate the little mean comments they make towards me or my husband trying to make a point to show us that we are worse than them for getting the vaccine or believing in covid.

Ugh.

I know a 'super spreader of the truth', convinced she is more clever than everyone else and uses facebook posts and youtube videos as evidence that she is correct. Her latest one is that George Floyd is actually still alive and his death was faked as a distraction, she isn't sure what 'they' were trying to distract people from yet but I'm sure she will figure it out and let us all know soon enough.

To be honest it’s hard not laugh at people still wearing masks. The rest is a bit OTT.

Do you laugh at those people who are undergoing chemotherapy wearing a mask, or close family members of theirs who don't want to carry any viruses back to them?[/quote]
Even in places where they're mandatory?

OnlyMsLonely · 15/08/2021 16:13

My favourite wind-up with people like this is to get them to tell me who 'they' are. No one has yet been able to tell me and numerous people online have blocked me and told me to 'go and do my research' (oh the irony). It's quite entertaining Grin

AuntMasha · 15/08/2021 16:16

I’m afraid I simply refuse to engage with these people’s paranoia, I just change the subject.

I’m still wearing a mask when going into shops, because I want to protect other people.

I truly hope you are a bit embarrassed about this attitude. The majority of the people I have met (and I include myself and DP) still wear masks predominantly to protect others and particularly because we are conscious there are many who feel incredibly anxious. We Sr ebith vaccinated and are relatively unconcerned with the risk to us as we are incredibly lucky and have no indicators of it being unsafe for us.

However I am more than aware that some people are struggling and afraid of the virus, I have no need to be nasty and not wear a mask in closed spaces and risk making others feel nervous and upset. Wearing a mask isn't a big deal (unless you have reason to be exempt which u don't so don'tbother with the crying that some people can't of course that's fine but I am talking about people who can here) and I promise if I heard a word in this vein from someone they certainly wouldn't be laughing for very long.

My DF has become very unwell from something not covid related. He is waiting for an operation and in all reality he is likely to become palliative. He and my DM feel very anxious and worried about the pandemic because he has become vulnerable. He is facing the end of his life. My DM is facing losing her husband of 50 years. If wearing a mask gives them the slightest bit of comfort or reassurance I would strongly advise anyone near them not to sneer. I have little patience for silky little people who make themselves feel relevant or important by sneering and laughing at others who are trying to get through the world as best you can.

I would truly be questioning what kind of a hunan being you are to think or say such a thing.

Cornettoninja · 15/08/2021 16:32

Small comfort for those who's fertility health has been compromised by the vaccine
But as these side effects were not being monitored they don't exist (apart from in real life)

@thisisthebestest no, I imagine it isn’t much comfort to someone experiencing menstrual changes but it’s not true to say these side effects aren’t being monitored, they most definitely are. The yellow card scheme site explicitly states that these are being investigated following more reports of menstruation changes than they would expect to see in the population.

There is no confirmation either way as to what’s causing these changes but it’s highly likely that it will be nothing to worry about and the same effect that can be seen commonly when women’s immune systems are under pressure similar to how the pills efficacy can be affected by certain medications or illness or it could be hyper awareness leading to women noticing a benign change they wouldn’t normally leading to a report of a side effect or even a mixture of the two. As things stand currently there is no obvious cause or signs of irreparable damage caused by the vaccines to women’s reproductive systems.

Somebody in Russia is sure having a good laugh at 'clever' people like your parents Hmm

VenusTiger · 15/08/2021 16:39

I haven't RTFT - just come to ask what the F 'anti-vax' means?
FFS!
I presume you're fully immunised OP - which means your parents are NOT ANTI VACCINE. Grow up.

BritWifeInUSA · 15/08/2021 16:41

Why did she buy a load of antibacterial hand gel for a virus?

Dartsplayer · 15/08/2021 16:47

@thelegohooverer

The thought that the human population could be reduced to anti-vaxxers is a really strong argument for getting vaccinated imo. I’d rather not hang around if that’s the future. Hmm

Totally agree. I'd much rather not be around with a bunch of conspiracy theorists
GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 15/08/2021 16:49

@VenusTiger

I and my siblings were fully immunised as children; my parents had their vaccines-are-harmful ‘epiphany’ later in life. Doesn’t mean they aren’t anti-vaxxers now, by which I mean they refuse any and all vaccines and would prefer those around them not to have vaccines either.

And the OP does not need to “grow up”, she’s perfectly entitled to feel the way she does.

What a an intelligent and adult response. Every shop I’ve been in today has had mask wearing customers and staff.

Mask wearers have opinions too. They just don’t post them to avoid themselves looking infantile.

godmum56 · 15/08/2021 16:53

I would block and go NC. You won't change them or your bro so take care of your own headspace.

godmum56 · 15/08/2021 16:54

@BritWifeInUSA

Why did she buy a load of antibacterial hand gel for a virus?
I think the OP meant "alcohol gel" which is antiviral but often called antibac gel in the uk
IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 15/08/2021 16:57

Tell them you won't be going round any more b cause the chip injected into you when you had your vaccine means you'll explode of you come into contact with anyone who knows the truth and you know that because bill gates emailed you to warn you.

Better not come to Scotland, then, where masks are still mandatory in Indore public places.
Buccanarab · 15/08/2021 17:07

3 months is not long term.

Short term (less than 3 months):

I have a friend who went permanently blind in one eye immediately following her vaccine (blood clot - vaccine was stated on her hospital notes as cause)

Long term (more than 3 months) :

I also know of several female friends who's periods have not returned to normal following vaccine. One was TTC and now2 can't.
This is longer term as it's been over 3 months.

We don't know the long term effects of covid or the vaccine. 3 months is not long term!

I wasn't talking about how long a side effect lasts, I was talking about side effects presenting themselves, which will happen within 3 months of being given a dose. And since over 4 billion doses have been given out over the last 9 months or so it's safe to assume all the side effects there will be have already been seen.

No one is going to start developing rashes, clots, tumours, hair loss, growths or whatever 1, 2 or 5 years after having a vaccine that's not how they work, so we do know the long term effects of the vaccine.

It's still compulsory to wear it on a lot of public transport. Many workplaces still require it. We're still in a pandemic. Dafuq you on about? Hmm
LookItsMeAgain · 15/08/2021 17:11

Ask them if they remember getting vaccinated in school against polio? Some got it on a sugar cube, others it was squirted into their mouths, but ask. Ask if they got vaccinated against measles or knew anyone that did? Did they bring you to be vaccinated as a kid? How about mumps? Or Rubella? Or Chicken Pox? Or Meningitis? Do they know anyone who has been vaccinated against those diseases?

Do they get their winter flu jab? Every year??

If they believe in any of the vaccines I've mentioned above, they are not anti-vax, but they are probably anti-Covid-Vax for whatever claptrap they are listening to on the radio or watching on tv or reading in the papers.

Due to the wonders of modern technology (which took decades to perfect so they are not overnight wonders in reality), science has learned how to be able to produce a vaccine in a much much quicker timeframe than in previous decades. Is it the speed at which the vaccine came out that is worrying to them? I can guarantee that had Edward Jenner had access to the technology we have now, when he was alive, the length of time for him to develop a smallpox vaccine would have been considerably shorter!

“I’m admitting young, healthy people to the hospital with very serious Covid infections,” wrote Cobia in a Facebook post on Sunday.
“One of the last things they do before they’re intubated is beg me for the vaccine. I hold their hand and tell them that I’m sorry, but it’s too late,” she added, referring to patients who have to be put on a ventilator. Food for thought. (Though maybe not for OP's parents.)

Boomers have weaker skills in assessing the quality of information sources like social media.

Whereas younger people lack skills in understanding that baby boomers are not a homogenous group.
