Are you the kind of person to name a plant/car/robot hoover?

Or any other object/household item of choice Grin
I've bought a lovely big plant for my teen's newly decorated bedroom. I've named him Denzel and my children think I've finally gone coco pops Confused
I wouldn't say I love Denzel exactly ok, I do a bit but I'm certainly invested in him and very much hope he'll thrive! I greet him every morning Blush
I'm curious to know if other people are a bit like me, or if a plant's just a plant ...

Our robot vac is called Boris after the PM. This is not as a compliment, just that it's nice to send Boris off trundling round doing some real work and clearing up after the mess we make instead of the other way round.

Unfortunately though, we have grown quite fond of Boris...he's like a little pet, but without the hassle. So am now kind of wishing we'd named him something else.

And now I realise I've referred to a robot as "him" rather than "it" throughout this post. Blush

Also giving things genders. “I love my car Jenny. She’s so great!” UGH.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 13/08/2021 21:24

Yep all 4 of my cars have had names.

OutOfTrousers · 13/08/2021 21:25

Of course. Our favourite plants are named as are our cars and bikes. The kids named the latest car. Just realised the vacuum doesn’t have a name Shock

HeronLanyon · 13/08/2021 21:25

I do for a very few things -
One beloved car was ‘Boy’ and this was used out loud and with dp also.
My wheelbarrow is ‘BarrowBoy’.
I have a favourite bandana taken on all walks and beach visits etc (many uses) which is called ‘Raggie’.
So I’m afraid not exactly names as we might think of them but they are deffo their names.
Current car which I do love is as yet (4 years) nameless. Not sure why. Is rather grand and fast and gorgeous and was from new so think he (!) hasn’t yet settled into confortable name terms for me.

namechangefornaming1 · 13/08/2021 21:26

I thought everyone named their cars 😂 I've got a foxy... Because she's silver... I'll get my coat

sanityisamyth · 13/08/2021 21:26

Yes. Car, horsebox, robot vacuum cleaner, some plants, my phone, and iPad all have names!!

McDougal · 13/08/2021 21:27

Who doesn't name their car? It has to be based on the reg though, otherwise it's just a bit weird Wink

MajorNeville · 13/08/2021 21:38

We've named probably 50% of the cars we've had over the years, our robovac has a name and so does my kitchen aid but that's it.

The people who don't name anything but come on a thread where people do just to say they don't, give me a "I'm superior me" vibe.

Agadorsparticus · 13/08/2021 21:39

No but my Mum names everything, I don't get it?!?

RaininSummer · 13/08/2021 21:48

Some things. I do have Roger the rubber plant and Irene the peace Lily.

tywysoges · 13/08/2021 21:50

My robot hoovers are called Joey and Pacey…

takingmytimeonmyride · 13/08/2021 21:55

No, I don't usually. Although I did have an orchid once that I called Gordon - because I was surprised I hadn't killed it so would exclaim "Gordon's alive" every time I went to the room it was in. But then it died. Sad

My friend was naming her plants so I told her to call one Balonz and she did. Grinshe is also a mumsnetter. waves Balonz is my godplant now.

hiredandsqueak · 13/08/2021 22:25

My three hoovers are named after ds2, ds3 and exh. Robot hoover is named after ds 3 reliable, regular and does a good job. G tech upright is named after ds 2 good in an emergency but can't be relied on for daily use. G tech handheld rarely used, unnecessary and out of sight out of mind. Dd's laugh, ds 2 takes the ribbing in good humour exh would be offended if he knew.

WineInTheBlood · 13/08/2021 22:26

I was given a plant as a housewarming gift in my first home and I called him Winston. I kept him alive for years and years and became so attached I was genuinely really sad when he died 😂
I haven't named a plant since, but funnily enough I never seem to be able to keep them alive very long now so maybe I should start!

LoveFall · 13/08/2021 22:34

Our car GPS is called James. As in Home James.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 13/08/2021 23:01

I have a RoboVac with a name. He also has googly eyes. He has a personality. He tried to trip me up the other week though.

KingdomScrolls · 13/08/2021 23:24

I used to name my cars when I bought cars I loved rather than the ones with the best service history and boot space. Can't bring myself to now. We do have a robot hoover with a name, it might've gone too far as DS told me last week, I had forgotten to kiss him (the robot) goodbye before we went out.

Galaxyinmypocket · 13/08/2021 23:34

No, but there are 2 birds that often visit the tree outside of my window and I've given them names linked to people I was fond of which have now passed away.

Not sure if it's the same two birds each time but they always look the same 😄

Galaxyinmypocket · 13/08/2021 23:34

Who* have now passed away !

ThinWomansBrain · 13/08/2021 23:37

once worked in an organisation with lots of confidential projects - I was asked to name one, which I did.
several weeks in, I said something about it having been the name of one of my cats.
Project name changed promptly - manager didn't think having his super-duper whizzy new project named after a dead cat was appropriate.Hmm
it was a daft idea to start with, whatever you called it.

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 13/08/2021 23:39

Robot hoover yes, because the app asked us for a name. I talk to it like it understands me too. Blush

Never named cars, because it’s a car. I especially don’t get having conversations about ‘what shall I call my car?’

LittleFroggie · 13/08/2021 23:40

No. However, we do talk about our favourite plants as though they’re all men which thinking be about it, is really odd. For example, I’ll say “Olive Tree needs a water, I hope he’s ok. He looks a bit sad. Should we give him some miracle grow? Apple Tree looks great, I think he’s enjoying the sunshine”. Grin The car is just a car though.

NotableTree · 13/08/2021 23:43

Honestly, if this plant is living in a teenager’ bedroom, it’s unlikely to live long enough for you to get chunky with it…

NotableTree · 13/08/2021 23:43

CHUMMY!
