To think that it's bloody obvious that you don't put a baby to bed soaked in calpol?

Just that really. I asked DH to put the baby to bed and give him some calpol first because he's teething and has been sleeping badly. Baby was already in pyjamas at this point. DH did this while I was dealing with the eldest. Baby just woke so I picked him up to find that he's absolutely covered in calpol. All down his front, two big blotches, soaked to the skin underneath and sticky all over.

I've obviously now had to change and wash him down to remove the residue, fully waking him in the process.

DH happened to wander by and I pointed out that I'd had to change the baby and said, 'He had calpol all over him'. DH just said, 'I know', shrugged and grinned when I gave him a look of incredulity. I am internally seething.

AIBU to be very annoyed or am I overreacting? Would anyone aside from my DH leave their baby sticky overnight?

I'd be annoyed. That was very lazy of your husband. Calpol is so sticky, it must have been uncomfortable for your poor baby - even worse wjen reyibg to remove clothes that were stuck to their skin!

8dpwoah · 09/08/2021 20:18

Definitely YANBU- we've had the odd splodge not mopped up very well on her sleeping bag when it's been a night time dose but definitely not ok to leave it on their skin! A baby wipe or two and a quick top swap while awake from taking the Calpol would have solved that one no problem.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 09/08/2021 20:19

How stupid can he be? If he'd spilt something sticky down himself, would he have slept in it?

54321nought · 09/08/2021 20:19

really, who cares?

Iusedtobesoooomuchfun · 09/08/2021 20:19

Oh god, I did leave DD to sleep with a calpol stain once. It wasn't on her skin but her baby grow was sticky. It was stupid o'clock in the morning, I hadn't slept in about 8 months and I just gave in!
She never fucking slept at night (for 3 bloody years!!!)

I would never do it in a non sleep deprived, not stupid o'clock way though.

Shirleyphallus · 09/08/2021 20:20

It would be bad if the baby really was covered in calpol…. But was he really? The bottles aren’t big enough to cover a baby in calpol! Was it actually just a blob?

I'm guessing the OP and the baby that woke up sticky...
Flatdisco · 09/08/2021 20:21

Is he normally so stupid and lazy?

Purpleweeks · 09/08/2021 20:21

Had he tipped the bottle over the baby or just a bit of a spoon? If he had somehow managed to tip the bottle then I can see why it needed changed but if it was just a spoonful it won't do any harm and I wouldn't disturb a baby for that.

The wet, sticky baby?
Curiosity101 · 09/08/2021 20:23

YANBU - that's ridiculously lazy. That would seriously annoy me.

If you're considering saying something then I do recommend letting him know how annoyed you are sooner rather than later. Don't let it build up into something bigger than it is. Just make sure you're clear on exactly why you're annoyed.

It was the majority of the front of the babygrow, and there was a load of the stuff in the crease of his neck too. I am not convinced any of it actually made it inside the baby tbh.

This. One dose for a baby is not enough to soak a baby at all. You’re being ridiculous.

I would care actually, I think it's important that my baby goes to bed clean, dry and comfy! Confused
MistyFrequencies · 09/08/2021 20:24

What shirleyphallus said.

juglover2008 · 09/08/2021 20:25

Was it all over or just a few drops from a 5ml spoon? I can't see how you could soak a baby in calpol and also once the baby was asleep isnt waking the baby up to wash and clean more stressful than leaving them a bit sticky till morning

Caffeinemonster · 09/08/2021 20:26

It’s that true I’d be more concerned that he didn’t know what the correct dosage is. It’s 5ml for a baby. Equivalent to one tea spoon I think. Not enough to cover a baby in the way it apparently happened.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/08/2021 20:26

OP if it's any consolation, when DD was 18mo and had chicken pox, in a seriously sleep deprived state (5am had got an hour's sleep as she was really suffering bless her) I covered her in Calpol and fed her calamine lotion instead of the other way round BlushI barely even noticed until she threw up all over me. She was fine

Strategic incompetence?

Potatoy · 09/08/2021 20:28

The cot will get sticky. It's lazy and leaving the clearing up for someone else.

He'd been marinating in it for a couple of hours when I got to him, so I imagine the liquid had soaked in and spread a fair bit.

Yikes, bless her! Glad she was OK.

I could probably deal with the error (especially if sleep deprived, though it's me who spends my nights tending to every wake up so I doubt he is) but it's the laziness and then the shrug and grin. Just irked me.
