To think that it's bloody obvious that you don't put a baby to bed soaked in calpol?

Just that really. I asked DH to put the baby to bed and give him some calpol first because he's teething and has been sleeping badly. Baby was already in pyjamas at this point. DH did this while I was dealing with the eldest. Baby just woke so I picked him up to find that he's absolutely covered in calpol. All down his front, two big blotches, soaked to the skin underneath and sticky all over.

I've obviously now had to change and wash him down to remove the residue, fully waking him in the process.

DH happened to wander by and I pointed out that I'd had to change the baby and said, 'He had calpol all over him'. DH just said, 'I know', shrugged and grinned when I gave him a look of incredulity. I am internally seething.

AIBU to be very annoyed or am I overreacting? Would anyone aside from my DH leave their baby sticky overnight?

Well I must be a lazy shit parent then because on multiple occasions I have had dc spit middle of the night calpol out all over themselves and frankly other than a cursory wipe with a baby wipe to try and get the worst of it I've mostly left it.

They have woken up a bit sticky at times, but entirely unharmed

Nomorescreentime · 09/08/2021 23:16

I wouldn't wake a baby up to change them because of that tbh. Hell I've slept covered in calpol myself many a time.

Moonbabysmum · 09/08/2021 23:35

I wouldn't change a baby over 5ml of most liquids. If baby was still unsettled and sleep was not on the horizon, I would change them for calpol though, as that stuff is stickier than a stick dipped in treacle. In the same way that a tiny amount if a poison can kill a lot of people, a tiny amount if calpol can stickify a disproportionately large area

That said, if baby was being more settled and was likely about to sleep, you'd have to pay me to change them. And I'm breastfeeding and it would have resulted in sticky tits 🤢

@ThirdElephant

He's pathetic I'd be livid too why would he do this now all the bedding will want changing too

I always think things like this are a red flag for bigger laziness issues tho!

Eatenpig · 09/08/2021 23:56

I wouldn't have woken mine no. I'd not have bothered. They child wouldn't be fussed. I'd have just waste it in the morning

Eatenpig · 09/08/2021 23:57

*washed. Kids get covered in all sorts over the years. Mine would sleep in filthy clothes if I let them

Eatenpig · 10/08/2021 00:00

I'm a other that can't understand why 'he took whole dose and spat it out' means a baby is soaked to skin. 2.5ml?

Member869894 · 10/08/2021 00:14

I'd have left the baby and did similar with my three on many occasions . They've survived

Emmelina · 10/08/2021 01:46

Ew no. It’ll spread from baby to the bedding and cot, and be very sticky as it dries out. That wouldn’t be comfortable to peel off by morning and you’d probably have a whole washload between the bed and baby.

Me!
I was that babysitter.
In my defence, I was babysitting for SIL, who is a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse, therefore she knows more about little children than I will ever know.
In my case, the medication in question was antibiotic syrup and my instructions were to administer said dose to baby at 10pm.
Baby was asleep at 10pm but I lifted him, as instructed and disturbed him enough so that he'd drink the medicine and not choke, then I lay him down and he curled up and went back to sleep like a small kitten in a basket.
SIL came home, after midnight, checked on son and promptly woke him up by washing his face and changing his night wear.
She told me I was a rubbish Auntie - she's not wrong!
I told her she was a fussy Mother - she is.
Then we went to drink gin together.Grin

Overreaction I think. Even if it was the entire 5ml that's a tiny amount of liquid really and wouldn't have been that bad to be left till morning.
