to want to install the blind cord clips

I mean, I'm fairly sure I'm not, but DH doesn't want to attach the clear plastic clip things that came with the blinds to the walls because they are not very attractive, and would sit right at eye level. I'm not that bothered about how they look. I'm currently pregnant, plus we may have child visitors, and I consider them an essential part of child-proofing. I thought if I could get some more decorative ones, perhaps in a silver coloured metal to match the chain, he would be more on board, but it seems such a thing does not exist. He has suggested a tie-back hook high up on the wall (in the window recess) to loop the chain out of the way, but I still don't think this is safe enough. as we may forget to do this/a child could climb on a chair and still reach (although I concede it's unlikely there will be a situation where a child is unsupervised long enough to manage this).

YANBU: you need to install the plastic clips that came with the blind
YANBU: a high up hook to loop the chain out of reach is fine.

You'd be insane not to because 'they don't look very nice' 🤬 why play Russian roulette with your child?!

BritishSummertime · 09/08/2021 14:54

I'm sat on the sofa, ours are pretty much eye level but I don't even notice them & I'm sure your H won't after a few days

AdviceOnLife · 09/08/2021 14:58

I'd rather my my blinds/windows look slightly less attractive, than even taking the smallest risk that I may one day find my child dead hanging from the blind cord.
I don't think I could ever put style before my child's safety.

Oops sorry mistake in the post - I meant:

I remember reading a post on here from a lady whose child sadly died after getting caught in one of the cords which wasn't fixed to the wall. She pleaded with everyone to get them fixed.

Tell your DH he's a dick and get them fixed.

Askingforfriend · 09/08/2021 15:09

What room is this in?

I haven’t bothered. I probably will when my kid is walking and climbing. He has a roller blind in his bedroom but the chain is really short and the window is high, so it would be a bit pointless I think.
I wouldn’t necessarily go nuts about it now as you’re only pregnant and they don’t move for a really long time, so long as the intention was there to install them once your kid can climb.

Amima · 09/08/2021 15:17

Honestly I would just get rid of the blinds. They’re outdated and old fashioned, and a huge safety risk for your child.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 09/08/2021 15:18

I haven't bothered with mine, but then my kids are 17 and 21 Grin. I would definitely with little ones around. We had much less awareness of the dangers 20 years ago but no excuses nowadays

This is a weird response. Blinds aren’t outdated or old fashioned. Just get the cords fixed.

Unfortunately, they become mobile BEFORE you notice that they have a new ability. You won't necessarily know that your child can climb out of his cot until you find him wandering along the landing. Child proof early, please.

I hate to tell you this but they are. Maybe your taste isn’t very modern.

burritofan · 09/08/2021 15:20

This is a sweeping generalisation but in my experience women start preparing for a baby once they’re pregnant; men’s “oh shit there’s a baby we must do something!” instinct kicks in about three weeks after birth. At which point he’ll probably install safety features on everything.

YANBU and also, no one notices those clips! They look far better keeping the cord taut than a high-up hook with a tangle of cord around it. Just install them anyway and ignore him.

RestingPandaFace · 09/08/2021 15:20

You absolutely should install them. If you intend to do it later you’ll end up forgetting and it’s not a risk worthy taking. The clear ones are really unobtrusive.

They are brand new, I won't be getting rid of them! Grin

We bought sterling silver ones instead of the clear ones.

This was exactly my point to DP. If we don't do it now, we will end up forgetting, not to mention losing them and having the added hassle of having to find them/buy new ones.

Ooh where were these from? DH would be a lot happier with silver ones, but I couldn't find any.

It’s a shame they are new, otherwise I’d say get rid and get these:

Christ, does it really matter. She is asking advice about the safety element not your opinion on her window dressing 🙄 I'd get the cords fixed, anything to prevent an accident , they provid them for a reason

This is as ridiculous as when someone told me to move the radiator to another wall because I wanted floor length curtains 🙄

Attach the clips but keep your blinds.

NigellaSeed · 09/08/2021 15:30

What clips are you referring to please? I have Roman blinds and the cord wraps in a figure of 8 around a hook thing at the bottom but I want to make sure I've fully child proofed.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 09/08/2021 15:31

Are they roll down blinds or the ones that pull across the window like curtains? We had the pull across ones but rather than it being a cord it was a plastic stick that you either twisted to open and close them or pulled left or right to open and close them. We decided on that type to prevent a silly Moggy from hanging himself off them

Ileflottante · 09/08/2021 15:32

I’m pretty sure I will notice he can climb before I finding meandering along the hall but I take your point. Also, his bedroom window is pretty out of reach of his cot.
