to want to install the blind cord clips

I mean, I'm fairly sure I'm not, but DH doesn't want to attach the clear plastic clip things that came with the blinds to the walls because they are not very attractive, and would sit right at eye level. I'm not that bothered about how they look. I'm currently pregnant, plus we may have child visitors, and I consider them an essential part of child-proofing. I thought if I could get some more decorative ones, perhaps in a silver coloured metal to match the chain, he would be more on board, but it seems such a thing does not exist. He has suggested a tie-back hook high up on the wall (in the window recess) to loop the chain out of the way, but I still don't think this is safe enough. as we may forget to do this/a child could climb on a chair and still reach (although I concede it's unlikely there will be a situation where a child is unsupervised long enough to manage this).

YANBU: you need to install the plastic clips that came with the blind
YANBU: a high up hook to loop the chain out of reach is fine.

I would. I once read a case where a lady was having lunch and toddler got out up from nap and died, always stayed with me.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 09/08/2021 16:48

I once had to have this out with my landlord, then again after finding DD2, then 18 months, with the cord wrapped around her neck. She could reach it from her cot.

Mischance · 09/08/2021 16:50

Fix them - your OH is being ridiculous.

Mischance · 09/08/2021 16:52

I speak as someone who has worked in hospitals. I have not seen a death from a blind cord, but..........I have from other causes, when the parents said "If only.........." Do not be that parent.

I have them on my blinds for the sake of my GC, and they are not here very often.

@Amima

Blinds aren’t outdated or old fashioned I hate to tell you this but they are. Maybe your taste isn’t very modern.
😂😂😂😂

Maddest comment of the day, are you twelve? Of course they aren’t out dated and old fashioned, there are thousands of different types. And in fact in most hyper modern houses they only have blinds .

Amandasummers · 09/08/2021 16:56

Yep, get the clips!! I’ve just come back from the barbers with my nearly 3 year old and the first thing he did was put his head through blind cord on their floor to ceiling front window 😩

Get clips yourself OP, and in the meanwhile tell your DH he's being an arse.

And is in for a massive shock if he thinks blind clips are unsightly or obtrusive 😂 wait til he sees what else kids do to a house 😂

What about stair gates etc? Is he going to make a fuss about those?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/08/2021 17:13

@Soubriquet

We have them in our rented house

Don’t even notice them really

If that is where the clip has been mounted on the wall it is way, way too low and doesn't comply with blind safety legislation.

I send noted to landlords every bloody day about blind cords.

MUST have an easy break mechanism or retaining cleat/tensioner.

The cleat/tensioner MUST be at least 1.5m off the floor.

The chain can be shortened, though few people bother, which negates the point of the cleat/tensioner in the first place.

Funnylittlefloozie · 09/08/2021 17:13

Made to measure William Morris blinds sound gorgeous!! I think you're already doing the best thing - give DH until the weekend to find nicer ones, but then put the other ones up.

Soubriquet · 09/08/2021 17:25

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Luckily, my youngest is now 6 so I’m not too concerned but they are quite high up. Not far from the bottom of the window sill. I would find it hard for a toddler to reach that high

HippyChickMama · 09/08/2021 17:28

We have these on our blinds, not especially attractive but safe and because they're high up they're not that noticeable. Also, no need to drill/screw anything to the wall. The cord just winds round the inside and is fully enclosed. Speaking as a hcp that has been involved in the attempted and unsuccessful resuscitation of two children that have become entangled in blind cords, please, please make sure they are safe

@AtticusHoysAnus

Why don't you just buy a metal cleat?
They are metal chains. They need a P clip, or tensioner like the above post. Not a cleat.

I think that poster needs to start messaging anyone with a luxury modern home and telling them their blinds are out dated and to get some big old curtains in there. 😂

Dixiechickonhols · 09/08/2021 20:47

Just get him to google toddler blind deaths. 29 in 2019. All the stories are the same - beautiful cared for children and it happens in blink of an eye eg nap time or boiling a kettle.

TooMinty · 09/08/2021 20:52

Install the clips. My friend is a paediatrician and there are only a few parenting issues she is vocal on, having seen the consequences. Blind clips, don't co-sleep if you have been drinking, thoroughly cook frozen sweetcorn.
