to want to install the blind cord clips

I mean, I'm fairly sure I'm not, but DH doesn't want to attach the clear plastic clip things that came with the blinds to the walls because they are not very attractive, and would sit right at eye level. I'm not that bothered about how they look. I'm currently pregnant, plus we may have child visitors, and I consider them an essential part of child-proofing. I thought if I could get some more decorative ones, perhaps in a silver coloured metal to match the chain, he would be more on board, but it seems such a thing does not exist. He has suggested a tie-back hook high up on the wall (in the window recess) to loop the chain out of the way, but I still don't think this is safe enough. as we may forget to do this/a child could climb on a chair and still reach (although I concede it's unlikely there will be a situation where a child is unsupervised long enough to manage this).

YANBU: you need to install the plastic clips that came with the blind
YANBU: a high up hook to loop the chain out of reach is fine.

Send him this link m.youtube.com/watch?v=2s6nBgy3MJA

Don’t watch this clip, you won’t be able to put it out of your mind.

If you do watch it, this was a (very) near miss and the child survived.

BruceAndNosh · 09/08/2021 15:35

@Amima

Honestly I would just get rid of the blinds. They’re outdated and old fashioned, and a huge safety risk for your child.
The OP didn't mention what type of blinds they are.... Roller or Roman.

Unless they are frilly loopy festoon blinds, no, blinds are not out of fashion

SusieBob · 09/08/2021 15:38

@Amima

Blinds aren’t outdated or old fashioned I hate to tell you this but they are. Maybe your taste isn’t very modern.
Who cares whether you think blinds aren't modern?

Just install them OP. You won't notice them once they are on. You won't necessarily need them straight away but if you don't they'll just get lost or forgotten.

silkpashmina · 09/08/2021 15:38

@CoralFish'. Did you buy your blinds online? Blind companies are not allowed to fit blinds without safety clip due to legislation.

You are unbelievably rude 🤣
Soubriquet · 09/08/2021 15:40

We have them in our rented house

Don’t even notice them really

to want to install the blind cord clips
Soubriquet · 09/08/2021 15:42

Oh and though it looks like a button that can come off, they don’t. It’s fastened well into the wall

MuddyStiletto · 09/08/2021 15:47

@Ileflottante

You won't necessarily know that your child can climb out of his cot until you find him wandering along the landing. Child proof early, please.

I’m pretty sure I will notice he can climb before I finding meandering along the hall but I take your point. Also, his bedroom window is pretty out of reach of his cot.

Have you read the thread about children escaping from their houses? We all think we'll know but bloody hell, that was a wake up call Prevention is better to rely on
alexdgr8 · 09/08/2021 15:48

please everybody don;t take any chances with these items.
tiny children can be amazingly adventurous in getting up onto things.
see the discussion about toddlers getting out of locked doors.
any kind of cord can become a ligature, hence why there is regulations about hood cords.
beware of items purchased from countries that may not have our standards.
these accidents happen all too often.

INeedtobealone · 09/08/2021 15:51

Amazon do silver ones or Toolstation.

Who made you the arbiter of taste? Blinds - of all sorts - apart from those frilly knicker ones that were in in the 90s - are perfectly stylish and fashionable. You may not like them and that’s your prerogative- but personally I hate curtains and would say the same about them.

Sorry, but you won't know if your child can climb onto his windowsill and strangle himself in the blind cords until it is too late. Plenty of other people have found this out to their cost - don't take stupid chances with your child's life.
CoralFish · 09/08/2021 15:59

Right, I didn't think this was necessary to include, but just to clarify: I love my blinds, and am not replacing them. They are brand new, made to measure, William Morris print, thermal-lined blinds, which cost a few hundred pounds. I am sure they are not to everyone's taste, but surely that's the whole point of choice existing!! My main impetus for changing my window dressings was a curtain pole installed by the previous owners falling down and a decision that all curtain poles of uncertain security need to be replaced before there is a small child for them to fall on the head of!!

@silkpashmina Yes, they were ordered online to self-install. The instructions are very clear that the clip needs to be fitted.

@MirandaMarple incidentally they are replacing floor length curtains which covered the radiator. I never thought to tell DP to move the radiator though! Grin

@NigellaSeed They have a continuous loop cord, and came with a plastic 'P clip'. According to the information which came with my blinds, the recommendation for the wrap hook type (cleat?) is that the hook needs to be high on the wall - I think over 1.5m.

Why do you give a shit what he says? Just get it done and he can moan all he wants Hmm. Baby's safety before his bullshit.

CoralFish · 09/08/2021 16:11

(And in all seriousness, I've shown DH this thread and given him to the end of the week to find some safety clips he approves of, after which I am installing the plastic ones if he hasn't come up with anything else.)

OP posts:
alexdgr8 · 09/08/2021 16:12

would you be able to cut the cord, is there enough play in it not to disappear into the winder.

alexdgr8 · 09/08/2021 16:13

but even with cut, open ends, things can be wound around.

sweetgingercat · 09/08/2021 16:14

Play him this video. It has a happy ending, but it's a really horrific lesson in how quickly and silently a child can be strangled.

Confused

Wish someone had told me this before I spent a small fortune installing wooden blinds in every room of my house. I couldn’t afford shutters.

What is in then? Net curtains?
Nothing - just flash your arse to the world when you get dressed?
Keep your curtains closed 24/7?

OP just get them, theyre pretty discreet when they are transparent anyway. Buy some and just install them yourself, they literally stick on. When baby is no longer old enough to be bothered by the cords then you can always remove them anyway.

Not sure why he gets to make the resounding decision on interiors?

Lorw · 09/08/2021 16:19

We had roll blinds but even with the safety clips I was terrified as my youngest SS used to climb onto the window sills and I reckon he would still be able to hang himself on them, so I cut them, we now have slat blinds that have safety weights on them (no chains between each blind) and a long stick thing to open/close/pull them across with which I feel much safer about 😁

Potatoy · 09/08/2021 16:19

Not worth the risk.

BashfulClam · 09/08/2021 16:28

@silkpashmina as we have no young kids in our house we asked not to Hager he clips. The fitter gave us them as he says he has to supply them even if not fitted. They are in a drawer somewhere. OP I would do whatever is safest, believe me you will have so many things to worry about it’s worth it for one less.

BashfulClam · 09/08/2021 16:29

Oh the other thing I’d why don’t more blind companies not make the cords chains that snap easily when pressure is applied or use the turny stick things.

Kotatsu · 09/08/2021 16:37

I like blinds (although I'm planning to also put up curtains for winter, because despite being in an energy efficient house, with new double glazing, i can still feel the slight chill from the windows).

I have the little plastic things everywhere, but, they break really easily, and something more ornamental would be lovely (I certainly wouldn't leave them dangling - even apart from the child danger, you're just asking for them to get in a massive tangled ball, get in the way of the hoover, become a favourite cat toy etc)

AtticusHoysAnus · 09/08/2021 16:40

Why don't you just buy a metal cleat?
