What do you consider your nationality to be?

Do you think it’s where you’re born? Or your parentage? Or your grandparentage?

For example, if you were born in Scotland, but your mum was Russian and your dad Venezuelan, what would you class yourself as?

Someone I know says they’re Irish because they have an Irish grandparent, but how far do you got back? AIBU to think only a couple of generations defines your nationality? Or do you think it can be longer?

And how much does it mean to you? I’m generally curious, I live in a place where locals are very fierce about their roots and I am a bit of a mongrol from my heritage and it’s never really bothered me, I just say ‘British’ because I was born and live here.

British, nationality is not related to ethnicity.

Darbs76 · 07/08/2021 17:23

Welsh, born there (one parent Welsh, one English)

Darbs76 · 07/08/2021 17:24

My children are white Asian and would probably consider their nationality British but they also celebrate their Indian heritage (support India in cricket, family who are Indian etc)

SheABitSpicyToday · 07/08/2021 17:26

British. My ethnicity is a mix however.

British, nationality is not related to ethnicity.
Oh, so I mean ethnicity then? Apologies, if I’m being a bit (a lot) dense

None of my family are English but I was born I. England.
I am British as I was born in England and entitled to a British passport but not English

Hankunamatata · 07/08/2021 17:27

British but both my parents are. My kids were not born in england or raised there so in my eyes they are not british.

Kralia · 07/08/2021 17:27

Interesting question. My kids have triple nationality but no meaningful connection to two out of three of the countries concerned. I have dual nationality and I'd say 70/30 connection respectively. I think nationality is fairly bureaucratic as a concept and is not necessarily linked to your practical connection to a country. You could feel culturally and emotionally 100% British but not be entitled to a UK passport.

Wooollffff · 07/08/2021 17:27

I say ‘British’. One of my parents is Dutch, 3 of my grandparents were not British (2 Dutch, 1 Australian).

It’s a nationality label rather than an ethnicity. Further back my ancestors come from all corners of Europe, the British Isles and elsewhere.

igelkott2021 · 07/08/2021 17:27

British, that's what my passport says.

But my ethnicity is different as I am partly Irish (but not enough to get an Irish passport0.

littledrummergirl · 07/08/2021 17:29

Welsh.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/08/2021 17:30

Scottish

HavelockVetinari · 07/08/2021 17:30

British. I've got an Irish passport so I guess I'm technically Irish too, but I grew up here. I could also have a Polish passport if I wanted, but again, I don't feel I need it and I don't speak the language.

MaverickDanger · 07/08/2021 17:32

British, although ethnically i am 75% Irish.

DH was born in one country but grew up in another, has both passports but says he is from second country.

Ironically despite having to pay thousands to live here, he is ethnically more British than I am.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/08/2021 17:33

British. One of my parents is English one Scottish. Grew up in England.

My children are British too. But have lived in three different countries, one born abroad.

DH would say Yorkshire.

cariadlet · 07/08/2021 17:33

I think of myself as British.

I was born in Wales and have Welsh parents but have lived in England for most of my life and have an English accent. I'd like to be able to call myself Welsh but would feel a bit fake. I'm definitely not English.

GogCymraeg · 07/08/2021 17:33

Welsh.

traintraveller · 07/08/2021 17:33

Scottish. I have Italian grandparents but I'm still Scottish.

Crabbitcrab · 07/08/2021 17:33

Streamside · 07/08/2021 17:33

Butchyrestingface · 07/08/2021 17:34

Born in Scotland, of Irish extraction (albeit not recent). Irish surname. Lived abroad but again, not recently.

I am Scottish.

fitzbilly · 07/08/2021 17:34

I'm English.

GogCymraeg · 07/08/2021 17:35

If you feel Welsh @cariadlet , then you are Welsh.

eightyfourandahalf · 07/08/2021 17:35

the one on my passport.

That's why I don't change nationality everytime I move country.
