To think if you park so far across the pavement that even f**king slenderman would struggle to get past, it’s your own damn fault if your car gets scratched?

Walking into town today with DS in the pram (in the pouring rain). I was walking up a road that is in a residential area, but this particular road is part of a cut-through between two main roads into/out of the town centre and is on a bus route, so it gets a lot of traffic.

It’s a fairly narrow one-way street, on one side are parking bays painted onto the road and dickheads people will often park like dicks across the pavement on the other side if there isn’t a free space and they’re too fucking lazy to park round the corner. The other side of the road is single yellow line so parking is restricted 8-6 Mon-Sat.

Apparently this arsehole bloke didn’t think those restrictions applied to him however, and had parked right the way across the pavement, leaving a tiny gap between the car and a garden wall.

This was close to the end of the road and a lot of cars tend to turn up the road without slowing down at all, so my options were to a) squeeze past the gap between the car and the wall or b) go around the car and into the path of oncoming traffic on a rainy day. It’s uphill too, and between DS, the pram, and my 23 week pregnant baby bump I was already fairly out of puff so wasn’t moving particularly quickly.

So I chose option a. Unfortunately, because it was such a tight squeeze the pram came into contact with the side of the car and left a bit of a graze. I didn’t really give a shit to be honest, so I just carried on walking.

What I didn’t realise was that the arsehole driver of said vehicle was sitting in the driving seat on his phone. When he realised what had happened he got out of his car and came running after me, yelling that I’d damaged his car and demanding I give him my details. I refused, pointing out that he was parked illegally, the pavement is for pedestrians and my and my son’s right to not get hit by cars overrides his right to not have to park somewhere thats a bit inconvenient for him.

He followed me a short distance and then went back to his car, saying he’d be contacting the police.

Selfish prick. I’d have done the same.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 07/08/2021 17:50

@KentuckyCriedFricken

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Yes, he was parked illegally but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to damage his car.

All this about rain, uphill, moving slowly, pregnant, pushchair, can’t walk around the car is just excuses and attempts to justify yourself. You should have walked around it.

A) she didn't deliberately scratch it B) she didn't do anything wrong C) no she shouldn't
CloseYourEyesAndSee · 07/08/2021 17:51

@Obbydoo

Two wrongs don't make a right. He is a dickhead and you are also a dickhead. But, causing costly damage to someone's car ourweighs his dickheadness. I hope he tracks you down in order to ensure you pay for the damage you have caused.
What is wrong with some people Grin You are so wrong it's absurd
safariboot · 07/08/2021 17:54

Obstructing the pavement is illegal. If he goes to the police, I dearly hope he gets sent away with a warning for breaking the law himself. Or even better, a fixed penalty.

(Parking on the pavement isn't illegal per se, even though driving on it is, go figure.)

glasshalfsomething · 07/08/2021 17:54

As a cantankerous pusher of a double buggy, I’m 100% on your side.

Ive taken to calling out any present drivers of badly parked cars - even had one tell me to fuck off a she had a right to park outside his house (ignoring the empty driveway).

I’ll happily squeeze past - especially as the rubber covers have fell off the metal fixtures of my old buggy.

Ive also complained to head offices, called the local traffic enforcement dept and asked drivers to move while I waited.

None of this is really for me - I know I could walk round or cross the road. However, my aim is for them to stop being parking wankers in case someone less able to me needs access/past!

safariboot · 07/08/2021 17:57

Causing accidental damage on the other hand isn't a crime. And isn't there a rule that a criminal (ie, dickhead parker) can't sue when they get hurt/damaged because of their own crime?

MagicSummer · 07/08/2021 17:58

The fact is you DID damage his car, whatever the rights or wrongs of the matter.

fuckoffImcounting · 07/08/2021 17:58

He is a world class parking Cunty McCunt and deserves all he gets.

atlastifoundit · 07/08/2021 18:01

He won't go to the police. If he does, then he'd have to admit he was breaking the law by parking on the pavement and he won't want to do that.

Turnitoffandon · 07/08/2021 18:01

“I refused, pointing out that he was parked illegally, the pavement is for pedestrians and my and my son’s right to not get hit by cars overrides his right to not have to park somewhere thats a bit inconvenient for him.” You are my hero. God, I wish I could stand my ground like that. Star

nancydroo · 07/08/2021 18:03

Hilarious subject title. Good on yer!

AngeloMysterioso · 07/08/2021 18:03

This is a google maps screenshot of the road- the dickhead car was parked on the left hand side, opposite where the space is on the right. So a few feet away from the double yellows, but parked on the single yellow and right across the pavement so only about a foot of his car was in the road. I was going left at the top of the road so if I had crossed over I’d only have had to immediately cross back again, making the possibility of a car coming round and hitting us even more likely.

To think if you park so far across the pavement that even f**king slenderman would struggle to get past, it’s your own damn fault if your car gets scratched?

@savagebaggagemaster

He was parked illegally. His car was scratched accidentally due to his own selfish behaviour. The police wouldn't be remotely interested. YADNBU op.
I agree. YANBU, there are too many people who park selfishly, he only has himself to blame.
skodadoda · 07/08/2021 18:08

@QueenStromba

Fuck him.
I think she was too busy with the pram, DS, and bump 🤣
SauvignonBlanche · 07/08/2021 18:09

Can’t believe the number of knobheads of this thread who say you should have walked round. - what nonsense! Angry

Mama1993 · 07/08/2021 18:10

YANBU I'd have no qualms in scratching a Bentley if it was parked on the pavement and I couldn't quite get the pram through

Sweettea1 · 07/08/2021 18:10

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

If you damaged his car then he is right to report. You could have gone round even in the rain.
Shouldn't have togo round the path is for people not parking cars! I would of Done exactly the same op some people who drive think they have a right to park as they he won't park like a nob again.
Sweettea1 · 07/08/2021 18:13

Every1 saying go round are probably just like him and take the piss when parking their car.

NotSoLongGoodbye · 07/08/2021 18:13

OP I would've done what you did (but would've been cringing when I discovered said driver was still in car). Absolutely unacceptable that people expect pedestrians to go in the road to avoid cars obstructing pavements

Candydreamer · 07/08/2021 18:15

I would of done the same OP and probably hit it quite hard for good measure.

expecting anyone, especially a pregnant person and their young child, to walk into a busy road where the could potentially get hit, is ridiculous and you absolutely made the safe and correct call.

screw him and his entitlement - maybe next time he will park somewhere sensible.

aintgotnotimeforbs · 07/08/2021 18:15

@LovePoppy

He’s absolutely wrong

But, you did scratch his car, and sound almost gleeful about it

And so she should. Well done OP.

It's the only way that kind of scum learn.

whynotwhatknot · 07/08/2021 18:16

if it was a yellow line he shouldnt have been there

but its not illegal to park in most places on the pavement unless there are signs or london
We do it down our street ( a small close) people just go on the other side to walk

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/08/2021 18:16

YANBU at all. And he was illegally parked to boot. His car doesn’t trump your safety.
