To think if you park so far across the pavement that even f**king slenderman would struggle to get past, it’s your own damn fault if your car gets scratched?

Walking into town today with DS in the pram (in the pouring rain). I was walking up a road that is in a residential area, but this particular road is part of a cut-through between two main roads into/out of the town centre and is on a bus route, so it gets a lot of traffic.

It’s a fairly narrow one-way street, on one side are parking bays painted onto the road and dickheads people will often park like dicks across the pavement on the other side if there isn’t a free space and they’re too fucking lazy to park round the corner. The other side of the road is single yellow line so parking is restricted 8-6 Mon-Sat.

Apparently this arsehole bloke didn’t think those restrictions applied to him however, and had parked right the way across the pavement, leaving a tiny gap between the car and a garden wall.

This was close to the end of the road and a lot of cars tend to turn up the road without slowing down at all, so my options were to a) squeeze past the gap between the car and the wall or b) go around the car and into the path of oncoming traffic on a rainy day. It’s uphill too, and between DS, the pram, and my 23 week pregnant baby bump I was already fairly out of puff so wasn’t moving particularly quickly.

So I chose option a. Unfortunately, because it was such a tight squeeze the pram came into contact with the side of the car and left a bit of a graze. I didn’t really give a shit to be honest, so I just carried on walking.

What I didn’t realise was that the arsehole driver of said vehicle was sitting in the driving seat on his phone. When he realised what had happened he got out of his car and came running after me, yelling that I’d damaged his car and demanding I give him my details. I refused, pointing out that he was parked illegally, the pavement is for pedestrians and my and my son’s right to not get hit by cars overrides his right to not have to park somewhere thats a bit inconvenient for him.

He followed me a short distance and then went back to his car, saying he’d be contacting the police.

Police won't give a fuck, he was parked illegally and he can't prove you did it or who you are.

I've done the same. If I can't get past without scraping it, so be it.

Even deliberately keyed one car after my nan called me crying to come and help her up as she had fallen out of her wheelchair trying to get down the curb because some dickhead had parked over the dropped curb.

He had been asked multiple times not to as it was the only way for my nan to get out of her cul-de-sac but kept doing it. So I keyed his car and made sure to get every single panel. Never heard anything about it. He must have known it was me but obviously couldn't prove it.

Was going to put prittstick on his handles too but didn't have any.

KentuckyCriedFricken · 07/08/2021 16:51

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Yes, he was parked illegally but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to damage his car.

All this about rain, uphill, moving slowly, pregnant, pushchair, can’t walk around the car is just excuses and attempts to justify yourself. You should have walked around it.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 07/08/2021 16:53

Did you take photos? I’d have taken loads of photos.

eightyfourandahalf · 07/08/2021 16:53

@LovePoppy

He’s absolutely wrong

But, you did scratch his car, and sound almost gleeful about it

it's only the relief of not falling on the floor bringing the buggy down with her, sending the baby flying on the soaking wet pavement and under the wheels of a passing shopping trolley.

The police wouldn't confuse glee with the relief of escaping such a terrible accident brought by an inconsiderate twat.

DrManhattan · 07/08/2021 16:54

You are 100% in the right

FreeBritnee · 07/08/2021 16:54

Good for you. There’s no way in hell I’d put my child’s life in sager for the sake of the side of his car. Thems the risk you take when you park your car selfishly.

insancerre · 07/08/2021 16:54

Yanbu
He’s an entitled prick
The road is for cars
The pavement is for pedestrians

FreeBritnee · 07/08/2021 16:54

*dsmger

FreeBritnee · 07/08/2021 16:54

I give up 😆

danadas · 07/08/2021 16:54

YANBU. I refuse to walk in the road just because some lazy arse driver doesn't have the ability to park properly. If your car gets damaged then hopefully they wont park there again. People will learn when it hits their pockets.

freelions · 07/08/2021 16:55

What a nob

If you park like a twat then you need to face the natural consequences

Why on earth should the OP risk being hit by a car

DrManhattan · 07/08/2021 16:55

@KentuckyCriedFricken
What aload of shit. He might think twice next time instead of being a selfish prick

hertoehurts · 07/08/2021 16:55

Pavements are for pedestrians. Park on it, expect to get your car damaged. I would have done the same as you. Entitled prick, hopefully he'll think twice in future.

Flev · 07/08/2021 16:56

If he was sat in it, surely he would have seen that his illegal parking meant there wasn't space for you to pass easily on the pavement. If he had cared enough he could easily have moved at that point. Since he decided not to, I'd say its entirely his problem that it got damaged.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 07/08/2021 16:58

You didn't do it deliberately and the alternative as you say was to put you and your child in danger so it's just his tough luck imo. He shouldn't have parked like a twat.

Aprilx · 07/08/2021 16:58

Why is everyone saying it was illegal parking? OP has not mentioned her location and in the majority of the country it is not illegal to park on the pavement.

BMW6 · 07/08/2021 16:58

I have zero fucks to give for his scratched paintwork. Wanker.

SoThisisMe · 07/08/2021 16:59

Absolutely 100% not unreasonable. Hate hate hate people who park blocking pavements and dropped kerbs. Their paintwork is not my concern.
I wouldn't deliberately damage a car, but neither I or my DC be driven into the road because they can't park properly. If that means the car gets scratched that's on them 🤷‍♀️

Tirediam · 07/08/2021 17:00

Nah fuck him. Knob

LolaSmiles · 07/08/2021 17:01

What a dick.

IIRC The Highway Code says you shouldn't park on a pavement unless signs allow it.

A car getting accidentally knocked due to a driver dickhead choosing to block the pavement is a natural consequence. It wasn't done deliberately and pedestrians should not be placed in unsafe situations because some drivers are dockyards.

LolaSmiles · 07/08/2021 17:02

Dickheads! Not dockyards. Unfortunate autocorrect there Smile

memberofthewedding · 07/08/2021 17:02

Ive had this issue when bringing in large bins that the binmen have left a few houses away. Bins are clumsy and they might happen to bump every badly parked car I passed. Oh dear .....

canigooutyet · 07/08/2021 17:03

So tosser parked illegally and is moaning that whilst he was sat in his car it was damaged.

Oh well. Next time perhaps he will engage his brain and not park illegally. Or if he does when he sees someone walking towards the car he will move it.

I've done the same in the past. No way was I walking into the road on a blind corner, 60 mhp speed, pushchair and toddlers with me. Only difference was as the bellend was screaming his head off, police drove passed and stopped. It wasn't me that got into trouble that day!

tilder · 07/08/2021 17:04

@RoseRedRoseBlue

Your post title is fabulous 😂
This.

And the car driver is a twat.

AlwaysLatte · 07/08/2021 17:04

The right thing to do would have been to see if anyone was in the car and asked them to move because you didn't want to scratch the car and the road was dangerous. Or gone round it when the road was clear. I wouldn't have pushed through regardless, knowing it would cause damage. But yes it was definitely dick-territory parking!
