Who is the biggest rock classic in this year?

We had the years of AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses etc. So who is the classic now?

I suggest Foo Fighters hold that status. DP argues it’s Coldplay. Who is right - and if not, who?

Coldplay aren’t a rock band or comparable with any you have listed.

FlyingRabbitsAtNoon · 06/08/2021 22:57

I agree @HerMammy and said the same to DP. If we are talking pure rock, Foo Fighters fit the bill and Coldplay do not. But I wonder if there’s another contender that fits the bill.

I wouldn't class Coldplay as a rock band.

SoddingWeddings · 06/08/2021 22:58

Coldplay? Music to slit your wrists to IMO.

Royal Blood, Muse, Foos, Metallica - it's not they simple. Have look at Download or Bloodstock festivals.

DeathMetalMum · 06/08/2021 23:02

Coldplay are not rock.

Green Day or Muse?

fairynick · 06/08/2021 23:03

Arctic Monkeys were definitely the biggest about 7-9 years ago.
Not sure there’s really been a huge band since.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 06/08/2021 23:05

Coldplay are shit. Not even in the same league.

karalime · 06/08/2021 23:06

Neither of you are right. Coldplay are not rock. Foofighters are crowd pleasers but not the most popular current band. If either headlined I would be very disappointed.

Current rock headliners are Bring Me the Horizon, Deftones, Avenged Sevenfold, Ghost, Five Finger Death Punch, System of a Down. Royal Blood, Gojira, Volbeat all super popular as well.

FlyingRabbitsAtNoon · 06/08/2021 23:09

Were Arctic Monkeys even the biggest? I always felt like that hit a slightly different market to be honest.

I was trying to google but was getting different messages on how I asked - bands of 2021 brought up BTS and most rock bands suggested AC/DC. Neither of those are what I had in mind (ROCK bands that still write and tour, etc)

But none of those are in the proper ‘rock classic’ level, and the older ones - have they even produced a new song within the last year (or longer)? I’m pretty sure System of a Down haven’t produced a new album in 15 years!

The Killers? Still fairly relevant

TrickorTreacle · 06/08/2021 23:23

Rage Against The Machine.

They've been going for 30 years now with very few gaps in that time and still going now.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 06/08/2021 23:23

Coldplay???

COLDPLAY???

Ffs! Your DP is trolling you Grin

karalime · 07/08/2021 00:34

Well "classic rock" is now My Chemical Romance, HIM and Greenday if you listen to any of the rock stations.

SOAD haven't released any albums but still headline rock festivals. The other bands are all THE most popular rock bands currently. No rock fan will tell you they love Coldplay or Foo Fighters (ok maybe the latter but who really, like 20 people?).

We will never have another AC/DC or Guns n Roses for the same reason that we will not have another Mozart, and the 1980s never had a Grimes or Stormzy or Billie Eilish. The genre is not as popular and mainstream as it once was. There are still fantastic bands but you won't hear about them as much.

Monkeybusinesss · 07/08/2021 00:43

You can’t have one. They don’t go in for pitch correction

Monkeybusinesss · 07/08/2021 00:44

Also your DH is smoking crack
Cold play. Ffs. Don’t they use their music to advertise nappies

Dita73 · 07/08/2021 00:58

There aren’t any decent ones anymore. In most genres of music now no one really stands out. I fear the future is vanilla music for eternity! 😢

FightingtheFoo · 07/08/2021 02:08

I think officially Metallica are the biggest/most successful band in the world

BunnyBerries · 07/08/2021 02:37

Hasn't been anything but Muse for me (seen them live at least 6 times spanning last 18 years). They went from obscure to firmly mainstream, but even though they keep progressing they remain timeless and no one can touch them live.

RightYesButNo · 07/08/2021 02:43

Coldplay are music to listen to whilst drinking tea that’s gone slightly too cold but you don’t want to get up to reheat it and it’s all just a wee bit annoying.

DolphinFC · 07/08/2021 02:48

I don't care!

I'm sticking with ACDC, The Stones, G n R and Rainbow.

To be honest, the heavy rock era has passed. There no modern equivalents , don't waste your time looking. The songs of the last 50 years will keep me going until I die anyway. I don't need replacements; they couldn't be as good anyway.

RightYesButNo · 07/08/2021 02:49

The Hu. Now that’s a rock band. ”Wolf Totem” makes me feel like I did the first time I heard “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin.

BunnyBerries · 07/08/2021 03:42

Interesting quote from Matt Bellamy of Muse:

"“Rock, strangely enough, has been one of the most conservative genres around, and it’s meant to be the opposite,” he explained. “It’s been a relatively simple formula since the 70s and few bands are willing to push away from that. If you look at the most successful bands in rock from the last 10 years, they don’t touch upon an ounce of the creativity of rock from the 70s. I think maybe it’s because some bands have had such massive success that it’s like a big, golden carrot; if you stick to the simple formula, there’s a good chance you’ll be very famous and make a lot of money.”
