Who is the biggest rock classic in this year?

We had the years of AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses etc. So who is the classic now?

I suggest Foo Fighters hold that status. DP argues it’s Coldplay. Who is right - and if not, who?

Absolutely, undoubtedly, obviously it's got to be Foo Fighters!!!!!
With the evergreen Dave Grohl 😍
Coldplay??????? Especially their latest song- Higher Power????
Although I have a soft spot for anything Marvellous Mike Patton does 😊

OhWhyNot · 07/08/2021 10:07

Cream

The ultimate rock band

Coldplay absolutely not

isseys4xmastinselcats · 07/08/2021 10:29
The Hu. Now that’s a rock band. ”Wolf Totem” makes me feel like I did the first time I heard “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin.
Thank you for introducing me to The Hu! May have just bought their album on the back of a YouTube trawl through their videos….

@NeverDropYourMoonCup

'DH says Coldplay'

Tell me that your DH is a late middle-aged man with a desire for a totally impractical sports car and a 22 year old girlfriend without telling me that he's a a late middle-aged man with a desire for a practical sports car and a 22 year old girlfriend.

😂😂

To be honest, he spouts some absolutely shite sometimes. I don’t think he engages his brain before commenting, but at least he tries to participate in conversations so I’ll give him that.

I think part of being a popular, recent rock band to hold a kind of ‘classic’ status means they have to be well known to a wide audience and have been producing for some time (10 years plus, maybe?). My mum would listen to Neil Diamond but was still perfectly aware who Pink Floyd was for example. It has to be a band that is a general household name even if you don’t go out of your way to listen - though you will likely know some of the words to one or two songs. They may also be a band that has H&M, Topshop, Primark etc selling rip off band T-shirt’s.

Some of the above listed bands you would know if you actually listen to rock music on the whole, but not otherwise. Killers are a really good shout though.

Great question. My 15yo ds1 is into Greenday, Metallica, AC/DC. (He plays guitar). Also likes Arctic monkeys for PP who's said they're a different category. Ds2 is always going on that they're so 'old' but I'm glad to see the next generation appreciating music that is played on actual instruments.

FightingtheFoo · 07/08/2021 12:30

Actually I'm amazed Iron Maiden haven't been mentioned here. They fit your criteria exactly OP

karalime · 07/08/2021 13:46

Iron Maiden are the same era as Guns n Roses though.

The Killers, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys were all very popular and headliners 10-15 years ago. I would say the 1975 are bigger than all 3 of those bands currently.

Look at the current top 100 and the only rock in there is Maneskin. There will never be another rock band as well known as Guns n Roses because rock is not popular anymore.

Loads of amazing bands about, you just won't see them on Top of the Pops!

MydogWillow · 07/08/2021 14:21

Royal Blood. DS loves them but also Led Zepp so spanning the generations Smile

Herecomesthesun70 · 07/08/2021 14:28

Some cracking bands have been mentioned on this thread.
Off to rock out now. 🎸

Meggie2008 · 07/08/2021 14:29

Coldplay are dross, and not a rock band!
I'd unfortunately probably have to say the Foo Fighters. I don't like them though.
I love Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, Metallica etc but more metal than rock.

There aren't really any decent rock bands out there anymore.

FlyingRabbitsAtNoon · 07/08/2021 18:28

I must admit I’m not a fan of the latest two foo fighters albums (and don’t even get me started on that weird bee gees cover thing - I feel like I must be getting old because I don’t get it at all!). But their early stuff was great. So it’s like I would necessarily chose them as the best current rock band out there, but I still feel like they cater to a large market, are generally likeable as people and go performers.

I’m embarrassed to say I don’t even know who Maneskin are! But then I’m getting to age where I’m stuck in an era now. Smile

Always no.1...zeppelin.
Foo Fighters
Biffy Clyro.
Killers.

pinatastick · 07/08/2021 18:36

I'd like to think bring me the horizon. Bloody brilliant.

BelendaCarlisle · 07/08/2021 18:40

Depeche Mode. One my not consider them true rock but they still dominate stadium rock gigs worldwide.

BelendaCarlisle · 07/08/2021 18:41

*might notBlush

FlyingRabbitsAtNoon · 07/08/2021 18:44

I really like Bring Me The Horizon but if I I was to casually mention them in a team meeting I’d be met with a lot of bemused looks Grin

H.E.A.T.

KentuckyCriedFricken · 07/08/2021 18:53

I’d say Shinedown right now. But no one can top X, in my opinion, over the last 40-odd years. Still as good as they were in the beginning and still the same line-up.

NeedWineNow · 07/08/2021 19:22

It's the Foos and the wonderful Dave Grohl for me 😍😍😍😍😍

Royal Blood are fantastic as well - I remember seeing them on Jools Holland when they didn't even have a record deal and thinking that they were going to be big.

pinatastick · 07/08/2021 20:19

Yeah I do find people haven't heard of them- their loss of course!

Mia184 · 07/08/2021 20:19

Rammstein
Metallica
Editors
The Killers
Muse
Nothing But Thieves

TrainspottingWelsh · 07/08/2021 20:33

Ltb for referring to Coldplay as rock. You need a trigger warning 'this thread contains an opinion readers may find offensive and distressing'.
But if he enjoys them he should really watch Slipknot live, standing a few rows back from the stage, very similar experience to watching Coldplay.

My dc like rock, as well as metal & grunge, but they're mainly all the same older bands mentioned here. Or they are smaller unrecognised bands. Then again, although some of them were modern when I was younger, I also loved plenty that were before my time same as I do now. If I had to name one still touring and releasing new material, I'd guess waiting on a war would probably get Foo Fighters the vote, even if as a whole they aren't really rock. Possibly helped because many younger fans will have been raised to correctly believe Dave Grohl is a legend even if we aren't particularly fans of the Foo Fighters.

Love Massive Wagons.

There are so many brilliant New Wave of Classic Rock (NWOCR) bands out there now, my personal favourites are
Mason Hill
Hollowstar
Scarlet Rebels

Among the (slightly) more established bands who I’d always go to see would be
Inglorious
Dirty Honey
Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown
Black Pistol Fire
Goodbye June
Ayron Jones
…….and just too many others to mention!

Agree about Dead Daisies but preferred them with John Corabi, though haven’t seen them with Glenn Hughes yet.

I love Foos but I think their popularity is waning atm.
