I can't understand why people are getting so worked up about this.

Our bins get collected fortnightly so if my neighbour was away for the black bin day, it would be a month without having them collected, so of course I'd be happy to put them out for them. By the same note, if their bin isn't full then I'd also do a last run around and empty all of our bins to make sure we're completely rubbish free and use up the space in their bin. I couldn't care less if they did the same - the bin is being collected either way!

Our council does collect bins with lids up, so that's not a concern either.

Freshprincess · 02/08/2021 16:49

@eightyfourandahalf how? We put our bins out the night before. If there’s space I’ll put something of mine in about an hour before they are collected, as I’m up for work. I’m not taking their stuff out or stopping them putting their stuff in. Both neighbours are retired and not up and out at that time.

If I’ve got any room in my garden waste bin on bin day my neighbour fills it up. I actually pay extra for that and it still doesn’t bother me.

Redsquirrel5 · 02/08/2021 16:50

@Neverrains

I can’t believe anyone would actually give a shit that someone else uses their bin while they’re away. Especially when that someone else is doing them a favour by putting their bins out in the first place! OP if you were my neighbour you could fill your boots. I have actual things to worry about, not someone using my bloody bin when I don’t need it Grin
You have said exactly what I was thinking.

Why on earth would anyone get so 😦 about using it. We use each other’s here if someone has too much and someone has a almost empty bin( likely ours.) Recycling if we have full bags we save it up in Ikea bins and take it two villages away as they get money for the school and village hall. DH enjoys a little ride out. He loves getting rid of stuff and also likes a trip to the tip.

PizzaBreath · 02/08/2021 16:50

I put my neighbour who’s away on hols bin out today (they didn’t ask me, but it’s nice), then I promptly added some of my rubbish to it and also to the other neighbours bin who had room in theirs too! I thought how much MN would hate it as I did it 🤪 there was still room in both is they frantically needed to add more in 5 mins before bin men arrived.

sofiegiraffe · 02/08/2021 16:51

*They’ve probably had a clear out and filled them up ready for bin day, to stop people taking advantage!
*

Could anyone be arsed doing this?!

sofiegiraffe · 02/08/2021 16:51

Bold fail 🤦🏼‍♀️

notagermannoun · 02/08/2021 16:52

@Dozycuntlaters

I really wouldn't care if my neighbours used my bin whilst I was away. Are people really bothered by this? Why?
Depends what they put in it. Dead pigeons - no.

If you don't have a car, it can be very hard to get rid of rubbish, so I wouldn't mind clear-out stuff.

Some people have serious bin rage, like those people who scowl at you if you put a piece of litter in their bin if it's on the street. Even if it's not your rubbish. Petty bastards.

user1471538283 · 02/08/2021 16:54

I would be happy for a neighbor to use my bins as long as they were emptied and returned. Not like my ex neighbor who stole my bin, filled it up and put it out. It had our house number on it! You strange attention seeking little man!

I'm excited for you! Throw lots out!

StrangeToSee · 02/08/2021 16:59

I power wash my wheelie bins regularly and any food waste goes in the food bin. I’d hate it if neighbours dumped smelly bags of rotting food or nappies in there, or dog poo bags. Imagine coming back to maggots in your previously clean bin!

Hopeisnotastrategy · 02/08/2021 16:59

If you don't put something in, OP, the bin men may notice the bin is short and cunningly deduce they are away.... 🤔

regthetabbycat · 02/08/2021 17:00

Some of you would die if you lived here!

We share 4 bins between 8 flats. No-one has their own.

spooney21 · 02/08/2021 17:00

My dh does this when putting out bins for neighbours. NDN is an elderly couple who don't create a lot of waste (compared to us!). They always put their bins out early evening but my Dh puts ours out later snd night and will check if there is room in their bin and throw an extra black bin in it. I cringe! But if it was the other way around I actually wouldn't mind.

StrangeToSee · 02/08/2021 17:01

As for the recycling bin, they’re quite strict about what can go in it and everything has to be washed or rinsed out eg juice bottles, cans, lids removed from jars etc or they leave it.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 02/08/2021 17:02

People wash their bins??

Freshprincess · 02/08/2021 17:05

@SixesAndEights

That would piss me off.
I sometimes put rubbish in my neighbour's bin because she's okay with me doing that. She rarely has anything more than one or two bags, whereas every now and again I haven't enough space

Why? I’m doing exactly what you’re doing?

tenterden · 02/08/2021 17:07

Of course you can use them if there is room for a bit extra. The bins don't actually belong to them anyway....

icedcoffees · 02/08/2021 17:11

Our council say the same thing. We're even told everything has to be separated into paper/cardboard, metal, plastic and glass.

But when I follow the bin lorries, everything gets chucked into one bin and then chucked into the lorry where it all gets mixed up together Hmm

AlmostSummer21 · 02/08/2021 17:12

@Freshprincess

I do it even when they’re not on holiday. I’m up at 6am, bins get emptied around 7.30. If I’ve got any extra stuff, then I go looking for an overflow bin.

Enjoy your temporary extra bin capacity, OP.

I bet you piss people off!

When I lived in our old house I would put the wheelie bins out the evening before SS it was a noisy job (cobbles) on the morning of bin day, I'd take the last bag out, if someone else had filled it with rubbish I'd have been well pissed off if I couldn't fit my bag in.

Other people's bins are not there fir your use.

OP - totally different when they've asked you to put them out & you know they're away, knock your socks off (as long as your rubbish isn't a leaking mess!!

memberofthewedding · 02/08/2021 17:12

I usually have a relative put my bins out for me as Im arthritic and cant manage them full. One evening I forgot to ask so I put a bin-bag of non drippy rubbish into my NDNs bin, which had been left out half empty. I wasnt going to knock and ask her because it was 11 pm. Someone must have seen me and snitched because next day she dumped it back by my gate with a rude note.

It has never occured to me that anyone would be mean enough to object to a disabled neighbour putting a neatly tied bag in their empty bin.

This is someone who has several times sent workmen to trespass onto my property without permission!

A few weeks later all of her bins were hidden by "someone" in a nearby alley and none of them got emptied. It was days before she found them.

One bad turn deserves another.

onelittlefrog · 02/08/2021 17:18

What how are they going to know ? So what difference will it make. A favour for a favour, I'm not going to use them past bin day

If it's really no big deal then why wouldn't you just tell them you're going to do this? (Or be more polite and ask their permission)

Kanaloa · 02/08/2021 17:20

It’s just putting some rubbish in a bin. I could see the issue if she’d been asked to water the plants and decided to dump her rubbish in the front room, but it’s a bin where rubbish goes.

I honestly wouldn’t mind this as long as they were empty for my return.

onelittlefrog · 02/08/2021 17:21

@Redglitter

😂 only on MN would people get upset about this.

The bins will be getting put out & emptied whether the OP fills them up or not. So long as they're empty for the neighbours coming back why would they care.

They probably won't care at all, but surely it's still a courtesy to ask their permission?

I mean, would you go round to their garden and use their hose or something without asking permission?

Just because you put something back in position for when they get back doesn't really make it OK to not ask before you use it.

It's just a bit rude really imo.

ABitOfAShitShow · 02/08/2021 17:22

Why would anyone be bothered if you used their bin while they’re away?! Mumsnet is like an alternate universe sometimes. 😂

Starlightstarbright1 · 02/08/2021 17:23

These comments on here make me laugh. I often bob a bag in my neighbours in the morning of bin collection. Bins are emptied at 7.30...

PeapodBurgundy · 02/08/2021 17:25

I'm going to be loved by the outraged masses on this thread; I've been using the large sized bin from the empty house next door while it's on the market. We've gutted our entire house room by room, and have just started on the garden with nothing hanging about waiting to be filtered into our own bin.

The council tax is being paid in full for the property, and they'll be empty for the next person moving in, so I can't see how it possibly matters!

It would take us months to get rid otherwise, we don't drive, and you're not allowed to walk into our local tip (I once tried with two black bags and was turned away). The council haven't resumed the paid extra/bulky waste collections since they were cancelled due to COVID, and I never trust these so called 'rubbish removal companies' after previously living in a house with a back lane in which said carriers frequently dumped the rubbish they were paid to remove.
