AIBU...Burford Brown Eggs...what else compares?

Please help. We get through so many eggs and the only ones we've found and loved are the Burford Browns which are £4.50 for ten. We use at least a box a day (5 of us.) We've tried all local recommendations of "oh the most wonderful eggs from the farm shop/at the side of the road" and honestly, they've all been crap in comparison.

On the basis that (unless you live next door to us and don't want to give location away in case outing) local recommendations aren't really of any help, has anyone found nationally available eggs that are as good or surpass Burfords? Must be some way to get our eggs for less than £35 a week!

Like others I too think Burford Browns are the best eggs. My husband doesn’t eat them so moans at the price between ranges but the colour difference is massive.

Aprilx · 02/08/2021 15:12

@HaveringWavering

What was the brand of the Cornish eggs *@Aprilx*?
@HaveringWavering

I wish I could remember. I may have to order another luxury breakfast box to find out. 🤗

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/08/2021 15:17

Well I'm going to give them a whirl, I love a poached egg or omelette. Having never seen an egg described as 'sensational' before, I feel it's something I must experience.

Aprilx · 02/08/2021 15:23

@HaveringWavering

Well I have just looked at the Cornish breakfast box we ordered and found the brand of eggs they say they include, St Ewe. The design of the box isn’t ringing a bell, but I might give them a try. If it is the correct egg, then it is much better than the Burford Browns which as I mentioned, were no different to Tesco’s own in scrambled eggs, I might use up the rest of the box in a different way.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/08/2021 15:44

St Ewe are Cornish eggs. I’ve had them and they are superior to BB. During lockdown #2 they had an appeal for people to go and collect their eggs from the farm. The supermarkets hadnt been buying so many and they were overrun with eggs. They post pics of the hens who look like they have a happy life.

HaveringWavering · 02/08/2021 15:45

Thanks @Aprilx! I think I need a luxury chef breakfast box in my life!

Poppins2016 · 02/08/2021 18:17

@Heyha @TwinsandTrifle corn is good for yolk colour, but I'll add my 2 pence and say that I find the real difference is made by the amount of greens the hens consume... my hens have access to lots of grass and leafy green veg and lay eggs with beautiful deep orange/yellow yolks. If they don't have access to green 'stuff' for any reason, the yolks are noticeably paler (their "bought in" diet is 50/50 pellets and mixed corn, for info...).

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken

It’s funny how everyone on here who has had Burford Browns understands what OP means. The ones who haven’t had them think eggs are eggs, it’s in our heads and we couldn’t tell from a blind taste test.

No one so far has been on and said they’ve had them but they don’t find them all that special or different to any other egg.

This.

Dh insists that they are an utter waste of money (Yorkshire chap) and insists on buying supermarket brand eggs for himself as they are all the same. He has thus far steadfastly refused to even taste the Burfords as it makes him so cross that we are so easily fooled by a slick egg box and inflated price point.

Ds and I laugh at his ignorance while enjoying our far superior poached Burfords.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 02/08/2021 19:07

😂😂

@LuaDipa

More for you two!

Meraas · 02/08/2021 19:12

I used to be near a Waitrose that often had yellow stickered Burford Browns, the joy!

My 10 pence is that corn is crap for hens

MrsKoala · 02/08/2021 19:31

@ImFree2doasiwant

Eat less eggs? 2 eggs each a day, every day, is a lot by anyone's standards.
Not by mine. I probably average 2-4 a day. So does H. We go through about 30-45 per week here. We buy them £6 for a tray of 30 from a local farmer and they are lovely.
TwinsandTrifle · 02/08/2021 19:57

@Aprilx I've just been on the St Ewe website and ordered a tenners worth of different ranges. £5.95 delivery a pain in the ass, but if they're good, I can get a tray of 60 next time!

Ha this makes me laugh as we were only just talking about Burford Browns in our house today. DH asked me if I wanted eggs for breakfast. Only if they're Burford Browns, I said! He has been out to M&S to pick some up for me this evening 😁

Ozanj · 02/08/2021 20:19

Go to East Midlands and you may find them for a £1 for 6 in some supermarkets in Indian areas where white shells are preferred. I personally can’t tell the difference but DH can’t stand them and won’t even buy them for £1 lol. That’s about as low as I have ever seen the price though.

Another option is to try and contact the farm directly to see if it’s possible to buy less than perfect eggs?

FadoFado · 02/08/2021 20:21

Not sure I've ever knowingly consumed a Burford Brown, although I do love eggs. I try to avoid buying anything from that Clarence Court brand as I assume it belongs to Prince Chaz. Don't want to be adding to his pin money! Might have to try them now though.

Love all the dark warnings about your cholesterol levels. As though we're living in 1987! Eggs are one of the most nutrient dense foods you can scoff. A true superfood.

dementedma · 02/08/2021 20:27

I've never heard of all these types of eggs. My friend keeps chickens and I can taste the difference in his( well, his chickens') eggs compared to supermarket. Like duck eggs too but wouldnt pay the prices the OP mentions. Her weekly egg bill is crazy

This made me chuckle Smile

We've tried loads of other eggs. Supermarket cheap and dear. Farm shop. Honesty boxes. All sorts, it would be lovely to find some that aren't such a premium price.

I have tried the Waitrose essential white ones and they were not bad. And the m&s ones, they were ok too. They're just not as good as Burfords!

If it's of note, to all saying about the degree of yellow in a rich yolk, Burfords are really orange yolks. Are there any others that have particularly orange yolks? Perhaps that's the key?

These have the most orange yolk I've come across - more intense than the BB and are my preference.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 02/08/2021 21:46

The blue eggs from Aldi £1.60 for 6. Honestly. Give them a try.

Passthewinebottle · 02/08/2021 21:51

I am very invested in this egg conversation now, will be following closely 😁 Please update on findings OP (& any PP 😁)

Badgertadger · 02/08/2021 21:55

If you're in Scotland, Waitrose Dutchy organic eggs come from newmiln farm in tibbermore. They're bloody lovely. Don't think they do the supply South of the border.

Rosti1981 · 02/08/2021 22:01

We eat a lot of eggs here too. We get from a mix of sources:
Riverford a dozen a week
Haresfield Farm Wiltshire from the milkman, 6 a week
And my favourite which are Orchard eggs, Brambletye Fruit Farm, Forest Row, East Sussex. Come with a local veg box company. Get a dozen of those.

We eat four per morning (one each!) so 28 per week. Plus the odd one for cooking/baking but don't use them so much for that

Rosti1981 · 02/08/2021 22:12

Oh milkman has been known to bring St Ewe as well
Just checked my egg bill. £16 a week for 30, I think the Sussex "biodynamic" Orchard Row ones are the most expensive, but they are nice.

TheKeatingFive · 02/08/2021 22:15

Must be some way to get our eggs for less than £35 a week!

I’d probably just make my peace with this. Good food costs money.
