AIBU...Burford Brown Eggs...what else compares?

Please help. We get through so many eggs and the only ones we've found and loved are the Burford Browns which are £4.50 for ten. We use at least a box a day (5 of us.) We've tried all local recommendations of "oh the most wonderful eggs from the farm shop/at the side of the road" and honestly, they've all been crap in comparison.

On the basis that (unless you live next door to us and don't want to give location away in case outing) local recommendations aren't really of any help, has anyone found nationally available eggs that are as good or surpass Burfords? Must be some way to get our eggs for less than £35 a week!

Well mine have started moulting today so I will likely be buying eggs for a little while now once they all get into their stride with it... quite excited in some ways!

Also to the person concerned about twelvty billion hens in tiny cages or however it was phrased, can you tell me what's pooing on my patio and shredding my begonias then, please?

I am baffled by the amount of eggs it is possible to eat in a week. I went low carb so started having eggs for breakfast and so buy a box of 12 but just can't eat eggs every day. Plus after all that high protein food I've had terrible time with my digestion and its done unmentionable things to my back sideShockShockShock

So my suggestion would definitely be to eat less eggs. But im glad you've found some suggestions to suit.

I'd ask if you get bored. But obviously not.

It sounds like that's nothing to do with the eggs @ZenNudist but the other high protein foods.

I eat at least a dozen a week and my digestion is absolutely fine.

I take it they all arrived in one piece OP? I'd be wary about subjecting eggs to the average courier, having seen what they can do to far more sturdy items.

Well. We couldn't wait, so we did a poach test just now.

  1. St Ewe original. Held together well when poaching. Tasty egg.

  1. St Ewe rich yolk. Very flimsy shell. Fell apart when poaching. Flavourless.

  1. St Ewe super. Thick shell. Held very well when poaching and came out almost perfect oval. Discovered this shape was due to a really rubbery white when we cut into it. Average taste.

  1. St Ewe grand. Thick shell. Fell apart when poaching. Poor taste.

  1. Burford. Poached faster. Held well. Thick shell. Tasty However, no "ah, this is clearly the best" when we ate it. Very surprised. And now questioning whether the St Ewe original is superior. It's between these two. Will do direct comparison of these in the morning.

DH is quite into this now and planning a "blind scramble taste test" Grin

Based on this thread I spent £3.50 on 6 BB eggs. Had one boiled ( was so excited) I honestly could taste no difference. Must not have a sophisticated palate…

Yes I ordered 5 boxes (minimum order £10, so got two of the rich yolk) and delivery was £5.95.

The 5 boxes came to £10.05. Its the delivery that's a pain. Although the Original ones we liked the most of all the St Ewe are the cheapest at £1.85 for 6.

One egg was broken. One of the Grand. The rest were very secure.

Are they all the same date, op? It’s not a fair comparison otherwise.

Have you tried Tesco white shell eggs? (Can't remember name of hen, box has a yellow label)
They have a very thin shell but a very dark yolk. I love the taste of them.
Or....how about a nice Duck egg?

Interesting about the shell quality in the St Ewe and Tesco, one of mine is dreadful for plopping out the odd fragile one (I know which hen because of the egg colour) when they all get the same access to oystershell etc. The odd one in the St Ewe could be a rogue bird but the whole lot in the Tesco is interesting.

I've also just dropped on to recommend that folk try turkey eggs if you get chance, they're like a less rich duck egg, almost like a big, pretty good hen egg. Very pretty too.

That's a very good point... I tend to use my "just laid" eggs for poaching, you can really tell the difference between an egg laid that morning and an egg laid a few days ago...

Just wanted to add, this made me laugh because years ago when I tried to get myself to like eggs burford browns are the only ones I could eat for years... I slowly spent about 1.5 years trying to wean myself off them because of the cost Grin I've now done a full circle and don't like eggs again, maybe I just need to go back to the good eggs!

I've just done a taste test between a Burford Brown and an Old Legbar. Both nice but I think I prefer the Legbar.

So, the Hoad’s Farm I bought to console to the Burford Browns, pretty meh and more or less indistinguishable from standard supermarket free range. However I got some Co-Op Irresistible Golden Yolks this morning and they were, in my opinion, as nice as the Burfords. Maybe worth a try @TwinsandTrifle.

I AM DEEPLY disappointed. I bought Burford Brown's this weekend and was so excited about them.

They're OK. Quite nice, but not as amazing as I was hoping. I certainly don't think they are worth the extra money.

Well we've spent a rainy Sunday binge watching Clarkson's Farm and he's just bought his own flock of BBs.

Mighty fine hens they looked.

We also tried BB for the first time (knowingly, at least) this weekend as a direct result of this thread.

Despite DH half-jokingly referring to MN as “a toxic environment”, he suggested I report back- the yolks were much darker than our usual Sainsbury’s eggs, but no discernible difference in taste and tbh we were disappointed. Probably our eggspectations were too high...

We also bought BB for the first time as a result of this thread.
I wouldn't but then again as nobody was particularly impressed, they are not as good as our local farm eggs.
(BILLY'S EGGS) for any Lancastrians out there Grin

I bought two boxes which were reduced yesterday and am just having some fried in a bap. Really orangy yolks which do have a flavour esp compared to Sainsbury's own free range. Glad I tried them now.
